Barbee in the mix for Sun Belt coaching job

Tony Barbee is one of three candidates in the mix for a head coaching job in the Sun Belt Conference.

According to ESPN, Barbee is a contender for the new opening at Georgia State. Georgia State is fresh off an NCAA Tournament appearance, but lost its head coach, Ron Hunter, to Tulane after seven years on the job. Hunter is somewhat of an NCAA Tournament legend; you may remember him falling off his stool after his son, RJ Hunter, hit a deep game-winner to upset No. 3 seed Baylor in the 2015 NCAA Tournament.

Boston Celtics assistant Micah Shrewsberry and NC Central head coach LeVelle Moton are the two other names in consideration to replace Hunter at Georgia State, the reigning Sun Belt regular season and conference champion.

I am really hoping that when Calipari does eventually retire, that Joel Justus get a shot at the wheel. He seems like an up and coming Coach of the future. Hopefully he doesn’t jump ship before then.

Brady put the crack pipe down and move away from the keyboard. Bruce Pearl will NEVER be coach at Kentucky!

Nah… Needs some seasoning as an actual head Coach before he lands a big gig. Joker Phillips is too fresh on the brain for UK to make that mistake again in a major sport.

If he does well though elsewhere, why not. I mean, it’s not like he’s ever gonna be the one that got away. We’re Kentucky. If we want them, we take whoever they want.

I have no clue what each coach brings to the table. I do know if you watch any college basketball game other coaches involve their assistants. I seldom if any see Cal discuss with any coach except Payne.

I think Barbee would be a fine candidate for a Sun Belt coaching position. Probably not ready for an SEC job (as evident by his tenure at Auburn), but restarting at a lower level and working your way up is probably the right move.

He started out at a Mid- Major, before taken the Auburn Job!

Good point. Maybe he’s picked up a few new tricks that he could take with him wherever (and whenever) he goes.

Excellent observation, Louisa. I told a friend the same thing yesrerday. Often you see the head coach gathered with his assistants during a time out. I’m sure they are not discussing where they are for a bite to eat after the game. You never see Cal doing that, or I haven’t. Cal does everything very well in coaching except in game adjustments and tweaking his system in accord with the opponents strengths and/or weaknesses. I love to see him bring on an in-game bench coaching specialist if they exist. There are plenty of them on thisblog, including myself.

Everything that has been said about him is he comes off as an ass and he just isnt getting it done recruiting. Time for a new assistant.
