Awesome Calipari Picture of the Day Wants Decision Update

The above picture is awesome and occurred tonight at the Northern Kentucky book signing, where the question on all UK fans’ minds continues to be…what will the remaining UK players do? I have no definitive answers but will pass along the latest we are hearing:

JULIUS RANDLE

It is almost certain that Julius will announce tomorrow that he is going to the NBA Draft. Randle is going to be a Top 5 pick and thus going is a no-brainer. Like James Young however, he will finish class at Kentucky this semester and not pull an “Orton.”

ALEX POYTHRESS:

All indications we are hearing are that Alex will return. There are people around Alex who would like to see him leave but he hasn’t gotten strong interest from the Draft folks and he wants to come back and continue towards his degree. Alex is a very smart kid who likes school and is close to his sister who is also a student at UK. If it were solely up to Alex, the decision would have been made and he would be back at Kentucky. But Calipari and UK have had to deal with other folks interested in him entering the Draft and Poythress is having to work through that process. Kyle Tucker today said that he is hearing that the Harrison Twins’ decision will have an effect on Alex’s but everything I have heard says that is incorrect. Poythress wants to return and that announcement could happen very soon if he is able to pull the trigger as he hopes.

DAKARI JOHNSON

In terms of news, Dakari has slipped a little bit from the forefront. Two weeks ago, Johnson wanted to return to Kentucky and I think everyone assumed that would be what would happen. But as he has gone through the process, I am told he has gotten more favorable feedback than he expected and now it has made the decision much tougher. I talked to two folks close to the process in the last two days, both of whom assumed he would return but said it was “60/40” return and getting less every day. The longer the process goes, the more possible a Dakari to the draft decision becomes.

HARRISON TWINS

I continue to say that most of the gossip and “word on the street” about the Twins is all false. I did read the article in Houston over the weekend as saying that the Twins are looking for a reason to enter the Draft, and I think if they could find it, they would leave. But the reality is that the feedback they are getting isn’t great and they are smart kids who want to make the best business decision possible. I have spoken to two people that are as close to the Twins as anyone and neither of them know for sure…that is why I don’t believe any of the gossip that is currently floated about. I do think however that Tuesday’s meeting with Calipari will be crucial and his advice will have a strong impact in the process, either way. At this point, if you made me make a bet, I would bet on them returning just because they can’t both be certain of first round pick status…but I have literally no inside information I consider trustworthy and will be waiting just like all of you.

There are going to be some big KSR shows coming this week, so sit back and relax. Going to be a lot of fun…

Matt, explain what you mean when you say that Alex’s decision to return would be affected by what the twins do. I don’t understand. Does it have to do with their relationship off the court or something? Thanks

Aaron playing at the 3 would limit Poythress’ playing time.

I dont agree with that Logic. Aaron is an NBA 2 (or 1 possibly). No way he comes back to UK and plays the 3, as that would not help his NBA stock at all.

Aaron can play the 3 if Ulis or Hawkins comes in to play the 1 and 2. We saw it happen this year, with a true PG in Ulis this year, it’ll happen again.

Rei, you dont get it. Sure, Aaron is capable of playing the 3. If he comes back to UK, he comes back to raise his draft stock. Aaron has zero future as an NBA 3. Too short, too slow, too weak. If Aaron comes back, he comes back as a 2 only. Playing the 3 at UK will only hurt his draft stock. So if he were going to do that, he would just go to the draft this year.

Cal would run a ton of three-guard sets that would keep Poythress off the floor. That’s what Aaron “playing the 3” means.

Aaron playing the 3 in a 3 guard lineup wouldn’t change how NBA scouts evaluate him as an NBA 2, yev. Scouts aren’t dumb. They can evaluate an NBA wing playing the 4 like Poythress and they can certainly evaluate an NBA SG playing an almost equivalent position in the college SF spot. Aaron returning hurts Alex’s PT if Alex doesn’t demand more PT with his play while he’s in there. That’s a fact no matter how much we wish Alex and the Twins all come back, the fact remains that it gets crowded

    Here’s how:

AP has the game of a power forward but should be a small forward. If the twins leave he should be a lock to start at small forward.

Currently at the 4/5 position we would have Lee, WCS, Towns, Lyles, and possibly Dakari. Those who think AP will start at the 4 are crazy. That would leave 6 people splitting 80 minutes. As such 5 splitting 80 minutes seems crazy at 16 minutes a piece. Lyles is really skilled and will pull over 20 minutes. Towns and WCS can easily get 20 minutes a game.

So you have the 3. To get minutes for other’s there could be games where Lyles or Lee attempt to guard a 3 (Lee is versatile, and Lyles took some shots at Stanley Johnson in the Nike game). With Towns ability to shoot from the outside, he can essentially serve as the 3 in some sets, while Lee and Lyles either guard a 3 or we zone up.

Additionally, Booker is a good shooter. It’s hard to keep good shooters off the court. There will be times where he plays the 3. There will also be times where Aaron Harrison plays the 3, and Booker plays the 2. Just because you’re listed as a 1,2,3,4,5 doesn’t mean that’s where you have to play. There are many teams that run 3 guard sets.

AP could potentially split minutes with Lee, Lyles, Booker, and Harrison.

If the twins leave: Ulis, Booker, AP, Lyles, and someone at center. I would guess a 5th year senior that can handle the ball a little bit backing up the 2/3.

Kyle Tucker Is turning Into a troll. Just look at his Twitter feed. It doesnt matter what line ups Cal plays In the course of the game. If the Twins and Poythress come back they will all start at the 1-3. Hawkins or Ulis will steal some relief minutes at the 1 but that doesnt mean both of the Twins will be In when he does. In fact…..If Ulis Is at the point, I would expect Aaron or Andrew at the 2 and the other on resting. Will the lineup be Ulis, Andrew, and Aaron at some point In some game?……….yes. But not enough to take minutes away from Poythress. If anything I think we would see a more stable lineup next year of Andrew, Aaron, and Poythress with Ulis/Hawkins, Booker, and Willis backing this up. If the Twins and Poythress come back next year It will be like any other team we have had. Clear starters and clear backups with depth. The roster wont be as unknown on day 1 as It has been since Cal has been here.

I agree. Harrisons, AP, WCS, and Dj start with ML, DH, and 4 frosh backing them up. First 5 get 20-30 min apiece. ML, KT, TL ave 15-20 min. Other 3 will struggle for minutes next year. Andrew averages 7-8 apg, 1st team All American, UK hangs #9.

Does anyone else find it interesting that Randle is having his press conference alone? If most of them were leaving, wouldn’t they do one big press conference together, like the 2012 guys did? Maybe just reading too much into it, but I would think Randle, who we all know is leaving, would be combined with the others that are leaving.

I think the twins will not make an announcement by the deadline then have a press conference where they blame each other for missing the deadline therefore returning to Kentucky… *smile*
