At least Kentucky isn’t the only blue blood struggling this year

There are only so many depressing stats I can share about this Kentucky Basketball team, so here’s a question: does the fact that fellow blue bloods Duke and North Carolina are also struggling this season make any of this less awful?

On Monday, Duke lost to Pitt 79-73, the Blue Devils’ fourth loss of the season. Joe Lunardi now has Duke as the first team in his “Next Four Out” (so, the fifth team out) and warned that North Carolina and Michigan State are getting dangerously close to the bubble too.

“Duke has finally run out of mulligans, dropping out of the projected field for the first time since 1995,” Lunardi wrote.

Of course, Kentucky hasn’t been near the bubble in weeks. Last night’s loss to Georgia essentially slammed the door on an at-large bid, meaning it’s SEC Tournament or bust unless the Cats miraculously turn things around. No team that started the season 1-6 has ever received an at-large bid to the tournament. Ever. To even be considered for the NIT, the Cats will have to finish with a .500 record (although in a weird year, those rules could be relaxed). Depending on what happens with the South Carolina game that was postponed, that means going 9-3 the rest of the way against a schedule that includes four ranked teams. Not great, Bob!

You’ve probably seen this stat floating around: Monday marked the first time since 1961 that Kentucky, Duke, and North Carolina all failed to make the AP Top 25 Poll. John Calipari believes youth has a large role to play in his team’s struggles this year, and the Blue Devils and Tar Heels are similarly young. According to KenPom, Kentucky is No. 341 in the country in experience. Duke is No. 344, North Carolina No. 326. Contrast that with teams like Gonzaga, Baylor, and Iowa, which sit atop the AP Top 25 and are made up of juniors and seniors. Here’s another stat that proves experience matters this year:

The fact that John Calipari has to rebuild his roster each year is a post for a different day, but as we brace ourselves for what could be a very depressing March, is there any solace in the fact that Duke and North Carolina fans may have to do the same? If we can’t win it, at least they can’t either?

This is the year to practice and get experience for the next year. We will be lucky if we get 10 wins this year

Tyler, yes, our dump of a season is slightly less disappointing by knowing dook and uncheat are not good either. Just slightly though.

Kansas will surpass the Cats as the winningnest team in CBB late this season or early next season. This record is a big part of what makes us the greatest BB program off all time.

Unrelated, but limited crowd noise makes it readily obvious how annoying Cal is with his constant yelling during games. What he yells is often embarassing.

I almost hope Kansas does surpass us in wins. It doesn’t matter that much, and some are getting way too freaked out about it.

Who CARES about that stat? Why does everyone keep bringing that up? We were the first to 2K and probably will be the first to 3K. IDGAF about that stat at all. I care about the current year stat which is terrible.

Without looking it up, what was the date that we took the lead in all-time wins? UK has been the best bball program of all time since before that.

They have the most wins because they’ve padded them up in a league that is good in football but pathetic in basketball. If Kentucky were in a real basketball league like the ACC, then they would have far fewer wins. UNC and Duke would’ve been pounding them for decades.

Three HOF coaches fading at the end of their careers , 4 if you add Boeheim . Practically every coach in the HOF was “nudged “ into retirement because they weren’t what they used to be . It’s just the way it is .

They are 5-4 because they didn’t finish their early schedule. Claiming it was covids fault. Coach K knew what he was doing

Yeah, it would be nice to watch a team that actually understands the concept of offensive spacing and flow, and knows how to run some sets to free up some shooters. I can watch this stuff at the local YMCA.

If dook and UNCheat don’t get in, that will be like taking Ibuprofen to prepare for a root canal. It might help just a little. But then you have Kansas – they should be serving a postseason ban.

We Kentuckians don’t have an NBA team or an NFL team like the fans of the teams mentioned have. Hence we put all of our fan-ness into UK and this year doing so just…blows for UK men’s basketball fans.
We have the worst point guard, a good kid but is an Achilles heel for this team along with our 7 footer. Both highly touted but are inconsistent and our guard has more assists for the other team than he has for us.
CAL is truly under the microscope and that is well deserved. 1 Championship with all of the talent he has had…unacceptable and I don’t want to hear about our NCAA Tournament wins because what matters is getting # 9 then # 10 and so on and CAL had the talent and the teams to get them and he failed when other coaches wouldn’t have.
This team this year is doomed and CAL can’t, or won’t, implement the fundamentals (see EXHIBIT # 98,406 the last 3.6 seconds at Georgia). CAL needs to change his practices and ensure that they are the best fundamental, and in shape, team in America. Only then will they start winning again consistently.

UNC and Duke are not I too 25 BUT THEY BOTH have winning records and could both get back in top 25 and will both make NCAA TOURNEY so they need to stop putting us in Same conversation as them.. They both have point gaurds that can get better we do not..

For everyone that keeps insisting Cal is best coach ever. I would bet anything and I mean anything that if Michigan, Florida, UNC, Gonzaga and I could go on for days had the Talent that UK has had in last 12 years they would all have 5 more NCAA TITLES… Simply because they all have better coaches and would have taken advantage of opportunity and also they would have never sent all that talent to NBA after 1 year maybe some but not half of what Cal sent. Plus they wouldn’t have lost all the transfer guys because regaurdless of him many stars they have the best players would have an opportunity. So you could say That’s the only reason they come to UK is to go pro well who gives a shit we can’t win with em ( championships I mean) so let’s get a couple 5 star kids and let them play with 3 or 4 seniors I would bet on that team winning over anything we’ve had in 10 years.. Lastly the 1 Title Cal won wouldn’t have happened without Miller ,Lamb, and Jones.. 2 seniors and sophomore.. How much proof do you need Cal is not what UK needs never has been..
