Ashton Hagans named SEC Freshman of the Week

You could make a good case for Ashton Hagans being Kentucky’s best player right now, and in turn, he was just named SEC Freshman of the Week.

Last week, Hagans averaged 16.5 points, 4.5 assists, four steals and 2.5 rebounds while shooting 73.3 percent (11-of-15) from the field in wins over Texas A&M and Vanderbilt. He had 18 points vs. Texas A&M, the third straight game he eclipsed his career-high. He has scored in double figures in four straight games and leads the team with 15.0 points per game in SEC play.

Some impressive stats from Kentucky’s release: Hagans is the only player in program history with at least three steals in five consecutive games and his 2.1 steals per game is second best in the SEC and fourth nationally among all freshmen. He’s also ranked first in the country in steals per game among freshmen who are averaging 25.0 minutes or less per game. Hagans’ steal rate per 40 minutes is 3.7 for the season, and over his last five games that number rises to 5.8 steals per outing.

This is the second time Hagans has won SEC Freshman of the Week this season. Keldon Johnson has also won the honor twice and Tyler Herro once. Ole Miss’ Terence Davis won SEC Player of the Week.

BBN should thank the heavens this kid was able to reclassify and become eligible, there was a time we weren’t sure. He brings it every game, plays with heart, something PJ and Travis to learn from. Without Hagans this team would have been in real trouble. Hope he shows out at UGA, the fans will single him out, hope he has a career game.
