Archie Miller claims Kentucky/Indiana series talks are ongoing

Is there hope for the Kentucky/Indiana series? Last night, Archie Miller said talks of renewing the rivalry are ‘on the table’ even though John Calipari once again slammed the door on a home-and-home series earlier this summer.

“It’s always been a topic and it continues to be on the table,” Miller told reporters before an appearance in Evansville. “The communications with both administrations has been pretty ongoing. I hope, we hope and Kentucky hopes the game will re-emerge and be part of both team’s schedule. When it happens really has to deal with two people will be doing what is best. I think there has been an ongoing dialogue daily and it’s something that both Indiana and Kentucky wants. I know from our administration’s standpoint and our staff, that would be something that would be huge for the buzz in the state and our fanbase and whatnot. It’s one of those things college basketball needs more of.”

Since 2012, both sides have been at a stalemate, the Hoosiers insisting on a home-and-home series and John Calipari insisting on neutral sites, even offering to play both games in Indianapolis. According to Jeff Rabjohns, Miller told fans during the Q&A that he wants to bring back the great atmospheres of the old games with half red/half blue crowds, so maybe the Hoosiers have warmed up to neutral sites. Or this is just hopeful rhetoric. I’m going with the latter.

I’m calling total BS on Archie. I think he is grasping for any relevance he possibly can in what is likely his last year in Bloomington. There is no way that this is a “daily” conversation with UK. What incentive is there for UK to schedule IU in their current state of suck?

    Part of both teams’ schedules?

I can see it now – Popcorn Box U puts it on their schedule hoping we’ll feel obligated but we don’t fall for it.

Then when we “forfeit”, they count a win on their schedule. Brilliant! lol

Be careful the NCAA may back them if it’s hurts our seeding.

Then they build a shrine for the gameless ball and give the players rings for accomplishing nothing.

I remember this matchup back in the day. I also remember the last time we were in Bloomington. I remember our fans and their children getting spit on and abused. I remember they way our players were treated as well. I hope we never return to Bloomington. Cal needs to stand his ground on this one. Kentucky would not benefit from resuming this “rivalry” game, only IU would. Count me as one who has no interest in resuming this or helping IU in any way.

I loved those neutral games from my childhood, and love hating Indiana so I’m all in on neutral but they can cram home and home where the sun dont shine. If ad got hurt in that court storming would have cost us championship. They want to be our equal but we would never storm court for beating them

No thanks. IU can try to rebuild their tattered program at someone else’s expense. There is nothing in this for UK.

There is nothing in it for us for most of our schedule. Tell me what Utah Valley, Lamar, Evansville, EKU, FDU etc. does for us. At least playing in Indy some more of BBN can see their team play a rival team more talented than most of our home NC schedule. Lots of BBN that can as easily make Lex can make Indy but when does anyone care about the fans.

      2:10 pm August 28, 2019 Permalink

If we beat IU, we were supposed to win. If we lose, it’s an upset. All the teams you mentioned, we beat easily, so there’s no drawback. We play some of the smaller schools to help with their athletic budgets (especially ones from Kentucky). Not to mention, this “rivalry” with IU got really one-sided for a while. We don’t owe IU any favors.

IU needs to get good at basketball again, then they can maybe call themselves a rival. As it is, I only care about beating them as a way to make their asshole fans a little more miserable.

Um we did struggle against some of those bad teams we played early the past few years. And we are the so called gold standard so why are you afraid of losing to them. We will have more talent than them every year so why the worry. In any case I said it should happen for the fans, many that can’t get to Lex that often will be able to get to Indy, remember the fans is what UH used to play for. I know now we are a pit stop for June but the name Kentucky used to bring fear to other teams as did Rupp arena. Not so anymore as for most of our team the home court is a new arena to them the short time they are here.

    • J-Dub421
      3:37 pm August 28, 2019 Permalink

Who said anything about being afraid to play IU? I said I don’t want to help them or their classless fans in any way because they don’t deserve our recognition or notice. IU is a has-been team.

Also, no teams inspire fear anymore. Were Lehigh and Mercer afraid of Duke? Nope. Was UMBC afraid of Virginia? Nope. There is way more parity in college basketball now than there used to be. That’s just the way it is.

And quit with the disingenuous “UK is just a pit stop before the NBA and the players don’t care” narrative. You cannot honestly watch guys like Fox, Bam, Wall, etc. cry their hearts out after losing in the tournament, and act like they don’t care. They obviously care.

Game should be played, at Indy and at U6 is fine. I would rather have that game on the schedule than another game vs VMI or lower. Plus it gives UK fans in Northern Indiana, Western Indiana and Eastern Illinois a chance to see their team play actual D1 players and a rival. Indy is actually a bit closer to me than Lexington is.

I know, but we gain so much playing Lamar, EKU etc. As a fan I would rather see us play better teams to prepare for the tourney Does not matter if you lose 5 to 9 games in regular season if it was vs good teams it prepares you way more than beating EKU and Lamar. Plus fans get to see better games. There was a time when we were not on their level, was not that long ago so don’t think they won’t be back.

Many more interesting teams than IU; why should we play them…because they’re just north of our river?

Indiana is just not relevant anymore. We should play schools that have fans that won’t attack our fans or our players. There are plenty of other schools that we could play that wouldn’t lose their minds when BBN comes to town.

Screw Indiana. They are like Western Kentucky…..it does not benefit us to play them anymore. We would be the biggest game on their schedule, but they wouldn’t be ours.

After the behavior of their fans the last time we were in their gym I would never take a team back there. Neutral games would be fine. If Indiana doesn’t start improving it will become moot.

This game would have the largest attendance of any non ncaa tourney game per Aaron Torres, and I agree. It would draw 45,000 in the dome. That alone makes it much more valuable than all those other terrible teams we play.

For the idiots saying we should play IU for the fans who live in WKY shutup please. Only old farts who can’t get out of the stone age believe that.

I live just closer to Bloomington and Indianapolis then Lexington and most of us here think IU can suck it. We would rather see UK play an actually decent big 10 team like Michigan in Indianapolis before seeing IU played anywhere. As for the reason we play a lot of these low teams it’s because they’re either in KY, have recruited KY players, have KY coaching ties, or have coaches Cal has great respect for. He does this to help get their name out there, give them a little extra in there budget, and give his youth a team they should be able to beat to build their confidence. Now if they lose or struggle against these teams it also puts a slap across their faces that they need to work harder and not take anyone for granted.

You say but IU could do that, sure, but you’re forgetting one of the most important things, most of these teams fan bases are just happy enough to have gotten the experience of seeing a game in Rupp Arena or being in a televised game that they generally have a better attitude win or lose. IU fans are sh!t human beings no matter where they are, although they’re also kinda cowardly when they don’t outnumber a fan base at a place.

Don’t care about Indiana one way or the other – big waste of blog space. Not sure why all the hubbub. Need to go forward not backward – let’s just let Cal work out a schedule that allows our young players to grow during the early season and be ready for SEC and tourney games.

It was reported, a few years ago, that the IU Athletic Department said they would never, ever, play another basketball game in Rupp Arena.
