Johnny Jones is cleaning house down in Baton Rouge. This morning, the LSU coach announced that guard Anthony Hickey, forward Shane Hammink, and guard Malik Morgan will not return to the team next season, and will transfer.

You should remember Hickey because he’s a Hopkinsville native, a former Kentucky Mr. Basketball, and in the past three years at LSU, has always played well against the Cats. He started 85 games for the Tigers. This season, he put up 34 points against Kentucky in three games, including a 20-point, 5 rebound, 8 assist performance in UK’s overtime win in Lexington.

Hmmm…with no Hickey and no Johnny O’Bryant, that series just got a whole lot easier. Any chance Cal picks up Hickey? Where there’s smoke, there’s gotta be fire, right?

UPDATE: It looks like there’s an arrest record, but no date. Scout’s Ben Love covers LSU and tweeted this as well:

    Cal go get him

Cal find out why Jones cleaned house first. Don’t need any drama in the locker room when you can be as selective as Cal can at UK.

Is jones cleaning house or are the rats deserting the sinking ship?

Those leaving a sinking ship are survivors , not rats.

No, it’s an expression – the rats are the first to sense a ship is sinking and abandon it. Google it.

Hickey has been in trouble or suspended every season he’s been at LSU. We’ve got Andrew and Ulis; don’t need a troublemaker. Good luck to him elsewhere.

      seriously, i agree

how many 6 ft guards do you want on your team at one time … assuming he’d sit a year, he’d be joining hawkins as a jr and ulis as a soph

Cal cant go after him, pretty sure transfer to an in conference school is prohibited by the SEC. I wouldn’t doubt that Louisville may go after him. Plus if he is in trouble, he will fit right in.

    • RUPPS_rhetoric
      12:07 pm May 13, 2014 Permalink

The SEC doesn’t dictate that. It’s based on the school granting the release. Typically schools don’t allow transfers within the conference. However it isn’t an SEC rule other than sitting our a year, which is obviously consistent with the NCAA rule.

Getting kicked off the LSU team is almost as difficult as getting kicked off a UL team. Surely UK has no interest. UL sounds like a good fit though. Probably would win the schools character award if such a thing existed.

Cal should at least look into this and do a little investigating…. Hickey never seemed like a trouble maker. Never exhibited too much negative emotion on the court when he played us, never heard much about off the court issues. Only reason we didn’t get him the first time around is because we chose Teague instead, which was the correct decision at the time.

He has been in trouble before. Wouldn’t be surprised if there are issues. Like Curtis Pulley, you can take the kid out of Hoptown, but sometimes you just can’t take the Hoptown out of the kid.

Why would UK pick up a player of Hickey’s caliber who is going to have to sit for a year. Would make no sense.

  14. Ky_Tom
    12:49 pm May 13, 2014 Permalink

Why would a senior want to sit out a year. There is little chance he can make the NBA teams as a first rounder, or even a 2nd rounder…So maybe Hickey should return home to Kentucky and sign on with a Div 2 school and he could step in and play right away..He could even come to Louisville and maybe talk to Scotty Davenport and go to Bellarmine U, IF He has “” the grades”” ..That school has high demands on its students….There are lots of pretty good teams in the Div 2 ranks, and its my guess that’s what he does…

No way he goes to the nba. It takes a really special player to be under 6 foot in the nba, and he is an average sec player at best.

No, and there is not a coaching change anyway.

Not sure why everyone gets so excited about the prospect of a possible transfer. Unless we really need a player at a certain position, as we did in 2013, I trust Coach Cal to find the guys we need and not take on another school’s rejects/problems. Kind of sad since Hickey is a Kentucky kid, but we don’t need a problem child.

I feel sad for him. He obviously is a heck of a ballplayer, but seems to have personal problems going on. I guess he’s used up all his chances at LSU; pity. Get your life together, Anthony, & don’t waste your God-given talent!

This really is sad. The people making cracks about Hoptown….well, actually, they are true. It’s truly sad how much talent from Hoptown is wasted. Wendell Quarles, Lamont Ware, Curtis Pulley and now Anthony Hickey. Just glad we have Bird Averitt, Chris Whitney, Lamont Barnes and Greg Buckner to show that it can be done. You just don’t know Hoptown unless you’ve lived there. Nope, don’t think that you do.

How many times did he get in trouble at LSU and get suspended? He had a chance and blew it, we do not need any of these gang bangers from Hoptown on our team. Let him go to Colorado where he can smoke it all he wants. We got a bunch of good kids and do not need this distraction in our way to another National championship!
