All four ESPN experts pick Tennessee to beat Kentucky

Tennessee will come into Rupp Arena as the No. 1 team in the country tomorrow night, and if you listen to ESPN’s panel of experts, they’ll leave with a win. All four of ESPN’s college basketball writers picked the Vols to beat Kentucky in their predictions for the weekend:

“Give me Tennessee on the road,” Jeff Borzello writes. “I think the Volunteers will pose too many issues for Kentucky with Grant Williams and Admiral Schofield, as PJ Washington can guard only one of them. I also think Tennessee offers a little bit more from the perimeter — which could be the difference in a game where both teams prefer to live in the paint.”

“I suspect, however, that LSU just showed the blueprint for how to score points against UK at Rupp,” adds John Gasaway. “Basically, the cheat code here is normal shooting (which against Kentucky is outstanding) plus zero turnovers and an offensive board on one in every three shots you miss. The Vols are eminently capable of checking all of those boxes.”

That’s cool. I like this team better when people pick against them. Read the rest of the predictions at the link below.

We are going to need to shoot the lights out to beat TN. We don’t have enough grit to out muscle them.

I’m not sure how you judge Tennessee – since December 9, when they beat Gonzaga.. that’s over 2 months ago.. UT has not played a single game against a NET Top 40 team. That’s amazing to me, but they have not played any of the better SEC teams yet.. so how do you know how good they are?. By comparison, during that same period, the Cats are 5 – 1 vs the Top 40.

Exactly and I think we punch prison Orange in the mouth but then again I hate them worst than any team so my analysis is very bias.

Yep, and Vandy had them beat, if not for some VERY generous calls by the zebras. That is my main concern – we almost never see any home cooking in Rupp.

PJ made easy work of Williams last year before walking off court with cramps, and I’ll take Travis over Schofield.

Schofield is listed as a guard

TN hasn’t played a ranked team since 12/9. We’ve played 5. They’re about to be punched in the mouth.

But TN has beat every team they SHOULD beat. Hell our kids can’t make F/T and we can’t beat althletic teams. Travis has not played a good game since we started SEC play and there is no reason to think he will start now.

1964 Dave…our kids can’t make free throws? They are shooting almost 75% as a team.

This has been Cal’s best free throw shooting teams ever.

Keldon was the only one missing a lot of free throws on Tuesday. This team is much better than most of Cal’s teams. What’s weird tho is that the guards are so so while the bigs are better than one would expect. Quickly, Hagans and Johnson should be shooting 85% and they’re not.

I’m not really worried about Tennessee (weird right) unless we get in foul trouble again like LSU. We matchup very well with them. Reid on Williams pj on admiral and our guards are just better than theirs. No foul trouble and we will beat them twice. Heard it here first.

They picked Tenn because its the correct pick.

    • bigbluenationmbb

An expert would pick Tennessee being number one and the country and Kentucky coming off a lose why wouldn’t they?

    • StillBP
      1:50 pm February 15, 2019 Permalink

good grief, bbnmbb types like NoMoreExcusesCal.
BoB predicted a 15 point UT win in another thread, can’t wait until he eats his words. Do you really think they’re going to beat us by 15 on our home court? No need to answer, it’s rhetorical.

    • bigbluenationmbb

I’m saying I think we will win but a good expert will pick the number one team in the nation after a Kentucky loss

It is the correct pick for the so called experts but they just missed this one.

Ummm. Good shooting, zero turnovers, and rebounding 1/3 if your own missed shots will beat anybody most of the time.

Yes, it does sound like a solid game plan. Almost as good as scoring more points than the other team.

How good of an expert do you have to be to pick the favorite every time?

  14. KYjellyRoll
    2:47 pm February 15, 2019 Permalink

They’re saying the only player that can guard schofield or Williams is PJ? Ridiculous. Lsu didn’t show a blueprint on how to beat us. It was merely a lack of effort on our part and a bad no call…bring on the Vols we match up better with them anyways. And if any of our 3 point guys get hot along with pj then it’s a long night for tn…it’s time for Herro, Johnson, or hagans to go of for 25. Write it down

    • njCat

National press never really knows much about individual players. They just throw around names they’ve heard a lot, make assumptions, and speak with great confidence.

Exactly. UT is physical but I believe we are too. One thing we will see tomorrow is a desire out of our guys. UT is cruising on a winning streak and may very well be outmuscled tomorrow night.
