Alex Poythress puts the helmet on Marcus Lee

Coach Cal brought the helmet back out after Alex Poythress threw one down over the top of Marcus Lee in practice yesterday. He also did a first with the Helmet Dunk award by recognizing an opposing player, applauding Russ Smith for his nasty dunk on Julius Randle on Saturday. Cal called Smith’s dunk one of the best he has seen this season.

But was it better than courage roaring in Monday’s practice?

Watch both “Helmet Dunks” over at CoachCal.com.

I’m a uk fan, but Randle may have to wear the helmet the rest of the year after getting hammered on by a 5-11 guy.

Smiths dunk was better– real game action and there is a 9″ difference in height of the players. But dayum! AP! That was freakin sick!

I keep waiting for Alex to do that in a real game on someone. There’s been a few chances where he could have and went for the layin instead. That baseline drive vs UL is a good example. He could have easily jammed that hard and would have blown the roof off that place if he did. I know it’s coming though and I can’t wait!

Poythress could do what Russ did. Russ could not replicate that Poythress dunk.

This shows the difference between Pitino and Calipari. Pitino says the new rule helps Randle more than anyone, basically insulting him, the rules, and the refs. Nothing but negativity there. Calipari applauds Russ Smith’s dunk over one of his players. This shows respect for our opponent and at the same time motivates his player. All upside there.

And yeah, I’m loving the growth I see in Poythress. He’s going to have a few nasty highlight reel dunks this year.

Alex actually went body-to-body on someone. Julius was to the side and put his hand up against Russ. People need to know what ‘getting dunked on’ means. Alex wins.

The question is murky here. Is it, “Which is the better dunk?” or “Which is the better posterization?” I think they have different answers. Better dunk= Russ, Better Poster = Alex/Marcus

Alex had a couple of very nasty dunks during the game – one off of a lob, and the other on a great bounce pass – both baseline drives. Like the energy that Alex has been bringing lately – I see good things ahead if he keeps it up. Also, it finally looks like he is having FUN out there. More of that – please!

Russ dunk was nice on the surface, but Randle not stupid; he wasn’t going to try and stop him esp when it was obvious he couldn’t block it. No point giving up a foul, a possible 3 point play, still get dunked on, and give up a foul.

Cal puts things like this out in the media for a reason. This is the first time I know of that Cal has put an opponent dunking on his guy on his website like this. IMO Cal is doing this directly to get under Pitino’s skin. Now Cal appears as the guy who gives credit where credit is due, a gracious winner, and someone who can acknowledge a great play by his opponent. Smart man, two steps ahead of most others, This is Calipari. Pitino sits in the corner sulking, blaming the refs, and saying Randle benefits from the tight game the refs are calling. Cal puts a video of Randle getting dunked on by Ru$$, and now Pitino looks like an even bigger child. JMO.
