Alex Poythress named Academic All-American

Kentucky basketball hasn’t had an Academic All-American since Mark Pope in 1995.

Until now.

Today, Alex Poythress was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America Second Team. A three-time SEC Honor Roll student-athlete, with a fourth likely on the way, Poythress earned a marketing degree with a 3.517 undergraduate GPA last May.

This year, as he provides leadership and a key presence in UK’s frontcourt, Poythress is also pursuing his master’s of science in kinesiology and health promotion. He had a 4.0 in his first semester of grad school last fall.

Alex is the perfect example of a student-athlete, and we hope he destroys Ben Simmons on Saturday.

Speaking of destroying Ben Simmons and LSU. I seem to recall a season when UK had to play LSU at LSU the last game of the conference season and Dale Brown had arranged to unfurl a banner declaring LSU conference champs with their expected win over UK. Wouldn’t this be a good time to return the favor?

I’d ask if you have to be a senior to win, but I know Pope didn’t graduate in 1995… Given all the academic emphasis, we haven’t had anyone else? Do you need to be an upperclassman?

Anyway, this is very impressive for Poythress.
