Students at Byrns-Darden Elementary School in Clarksville, Tennessee got a big surprise on Friday when Alex Poythress walked in to take part in the school’s annual Field Day. Poythress, a Clarksville native, spent the day playing basketball with the kids and coaching them during the school’s basketball shooting challenge. He did a video interview with The Leaf Chronicle’s Tavia D. Green in which he said giving back to his community is a big priority for him:

“I was in the same position in this community growing up,” Poythress said. “I just want to give back. I love Clarksville, because it’s my home. I see these kids growing up, and it’s a great city, environment and great place to live.”

It’s kind of tough to hear his comments in the video (the winds were fierce in Clarksville that day), but Green has some footage of Poythress playing with the kids that is pretty awesome. Attaboy, Poy.

Although noble and honorable, I need you in the gym working on your 3-pointers! BBN needs you shooting at least a 100 a day from various positions behind the line!

Darn… I busted out a window at Burns Darden… (not intentionally). A long foul ball by mistake during practice back in the 70’s.. There ya go. I confess. It was me.
