The story of local broadcasting legend Alan Cutler is officially available for purchase.
Today, Cutler’s CUT TO THE CHASE! was released on Amazon, with copies available via paperback and/or Kindle.
In his new book, Cutler, the former long-time sports anchor-reporter at LEX18, highlights some of the biggest moments of his career, including the time he chased former Kentucky basketball coach Billy Gillispie down the hallway on the day he was fired.
“Over the years, I’ve been able to interview a lot of newsworthy people,” Cutler said at the outset of the project. “I’m not trying to brag, but it’s something I know I’m good at—it’s a gift. People seem to open up to me, and I’ve accumulated a lot of interesting and entertaining stories along the way.”
“Bold, opinionated, and revealing, CUT TO THE CHASE!—with a special foreword by John Calipari—chronicles some of Cutler’s most memorable encounters during his riveting forty-four-year broadcasting career,” the official book description reads. “From calling Little League Baseball games in Farmington, New Mexico, to his tenuous relationship with Rick Pitino, as the long-time host of the Cincinnati Bengals Radio Network, to his thoughts on the current state of UK Basketball and Football—Cutler lays it all out on the line for the True Blue fan.
“Told in his usual brash, confident, and no-holds-barred manner, the book—painstakingly crafted over a two-year period with Dr. John Huang—captures Cutler doing what he does best… beating everybody to the punch in telling stories people want to hear.”
“Throughout my career, I never worked for any TV station,” Cutler writes in the book’s introduction. “I worked for you—the True Blue fan. TV paid me, but I was always delivering for those that watched or listened on the radio. There were times my aggressive philosophy caused some clashes with management, but that goes with the territory. You probably remember when I was chasing UK Basketball coach Billy Gillispie after he was fired. All I was trying to do was what I always did, working hard to get the story—nothing more, nothing less. It almost got me fired.”
Why did the most powerful man in college athletics tell a former UK coach to shut up in the bathroom? What about stories of King Rex crying, Sam Bowie shooting air balls, why Bill Curry flopped, or Dick Enberg’s socks, among other never-before-told tales from Alan’s personal perspective?
“Over the last three decades, no media member has been closer to UK Athletics than Alan Cutler,” KSR’s own Matt Jones said of CUT TO THE CHASE! “This book is full of wonderful stories of that time and is like Alan himself, unique, entertaining and full of insight. A must read for every UK fan.”
“When I was a columnist for the New York Daily News and visited Lexington, it was always a pleasure to see Alan Cutler,” Hall of Fame sportswriter Dick “Hoops” Weiss added. “The man was a fixture at Kentucky Basketball games at Rupp Arena—a great storyteller and the ultimate insider who was always fair with the coaches and players he covered. It’s what made him so good at his job in TV. Now, he has put some of his favorite memories into a book, and after you read it, you will know why he was the “go-to guy” for all things in the Blue Grass.”
“CUT TO THE CHASE, by Alan Cutler, is a candid peek of UK by someone who’s not afraid to research and boldly comment,” Mississippi State football coach Mike Leach said. “Read about what went on behind the Big Blue curtain during his forty-year career – ENJOY!”
