Normally I’m relegated to strictly covering the football team at Commonwealth Stadium, but tonight I am sitting on the floor of Rupp Arena. I’ve never been this close to the Kentucky basketball team before. I’m gonna do my best to keep it together, but until then I’m just gonna write about what the hell is going on.
— There’s nothing like walking out through the tunnel. I envisioned it thousands of times as a kid playing in the street, but to actually do it for the first time was breathtaking. I tried to not play it up beforehand – after all, I’m supposed to be a professional – but no matter how much I tried to keep my cool, it was an unforgettable experience.
— Big Bertha has gotten louder. I know I haven’t been here in a year or so, but I don’t remember her being THIS loud. Instead of talking to Larry Vaught, I’ll be screaming at him until game time.
— It was a sprint for the first fans into Rupp. It was kind of cool seeing the Arena empty with only Wildcats and a few media members, then 90 minutes before tipoff people were tripping over each other to get into their seats. A few waited to get their soft serve ice cream, but the place is already filling up. I have a feeling we’re going to have a great crowd to kick off the holiday weekend.
— These guys don’t miss in warm-ups. OK, they miss some, but there’s not a more beautiful sight in the world then watching a shooter get on a roll and hit a dozen shots in a row. It isn’t strictly for the “shooters.” Humphries, Skal and Marcus Lee have had their fair share of streaks from mid-range. I love it, but I’d love to see them do it more from the free throw line.
— We’re 60 minutes from tip-off. I’m taking the Cats…by 90.
