2021 No. 1 prospect Jonathan Kuminga cuts list to five, includes Kentucky

2021 No. 1 overall prospect Jonathan Kuminga has trimmed his list down to five, and the Kentucky Wildcats made the cut.

This afternoon, Kuminga — a 6-foot-8 forward out of Hillside, NJ — announced he is down to Auburn, Duke, Kentucky, Texas Tech, and the G League, cutting the likes of Memphis, Washington, Maryland, Michigan, Florida State, and Georgia from his list.

@JonathanKuming6

At various points in his recruitment, schools such as Duke, LSU, Auburn, Kentucky, and Texas Tech have picked up momentum and/or have been deemed favorites for the five-star forward. Over at 247Sports, Chris Fisher of the Cats Pause submitted the most recent Crystal Ball in favor of the Red Raiders.

Kuminga is the brother of Texas Tech forward Joel Ntambwe, who is expected to suit up for the first time next season after sitting out a year.

Outside of Texas Tech, the G League option is growing as a strong contender to land Kuminga.

Though Kentucky isn’t currently seen as a favorite, the No. 1 overall prospect has multiple connections with the program.

On the surface, the five-star forward is a standout at The Patrick School in New Jersey, the same school current and former Wildcats Nick Richards and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist both attended. Calipari, who has a home in New Jersey and has developed deep connections in the state, has also signed other prospects out of the Garden State such as Karl-Anthony Towns, Dakari Johnson, Isaiah Briscoe, Kahlil Whitney, and Lance Ware.
This year alone, Kuminga attended the Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden as a guest of Kentucky, with the 6-foot-8 forward seen shaking hands with Wall in the stands.

After the game, Kuminga was seen near the UK locker room in the same frame as wall, with the prized five-star prospect facing away from the camera in the navy blue jacket.

Could John Calipari and the UK coaching staff come in and pull off the major surprise?

It’s weird to see the G-League included in lists. The NCAA needs to step on the gas.

    Nice.

    Also, Memphis cheats.

Every School cheats, including ours. Remember it is our coach who has had wins vacated at to schools. Regardless this kid is trouble with a T. Has already had some eligibility issues in high school, need to stay far away

Mashburnfan1 eat a bowl of dicks man for real. Like you are the worst of the worst on KSR. I think you do it for attention, I really do. You don’t know me and I don’t know you. But you’re always a dick and always negative. Like what did the Cats do to you? And to have a legend in your name is pathetic. Please just stop and move on and NEVER CALL YOURSELF A KENTUCKY FAN!

mashbum right on cue, so predictable. Yes they vacated wins without a shred of evidence. What a total stooge. Now go make excuses for every team we beat and for every game Stoops loses.

If I ever had any doubts that mashburnfan wasnt actually a troll they have been entirely removed. No actual UK fan would post that comment. What a loser.

We can pay more than the g league for this young man

That Bleacher Report mock NBA draft has him getting picked #3 overall next year. It even said he would be drafted #1 this year over James Wiseman. They expect him to reclassify to 2020 instead of wasting another year in high school. I bet he does just that and goes into the G-League but man imagine if he did reclass and came to Kentucky with Boston & Clarke.

He turns 18 this October. He says “For me, right now, I would say 50/50 on reclassifying”

A cut-down like this makes me think that a reclass is imminent. Anywhere but Duke, dude.

If not the G-League then it has to be Duke or UK. Only thing college can offer him is branding. TT and Auburn play a handful of games on national tv. UK and Duke play all their games on TV. At this point though, I could see the G-League Select team playing a lot of games on TV. I would be curious to see how they fare vs G league teams. Especially if you add Kuminga to that team. Him and Green with Nix running point would be fun to watch.

Almost every ranked kid wants the Ky hat at his table so he will flirt with UK until the very end.
HTF does Big Brucie get Auburn added into the final list for so many top guys, and how has Auburn/Pearl avoided any punishment from the Chuck Person $$ dealing ?

Oh, Auburn’s going down for that, just as Arizona and LSU and Kansas and others are. It just takes time.

‘IF’ the G League is on the table, and it is…looks like pick 5 for a reason – which is to keep options on that table ‘open’…he is likely going G League.

Bruce Pearl just wants his name in contention with the top recruits.
He has been excelling at selling that…and keeping AU in the media.
Bruce Pearl is a great coach and tremendous motivator.
Reminds me of of a hungry Pitino…only heavier …and one who got caught cheating previously.
    Which haunts.
    Eternally.

I’m guessing the dude got in because he had a ticket or a pass, like everyone else. Can’t deny admission because he’s wearing another school’s jacket. We still have First Amendment rights in this country. That would be like insisting Elaine Benes remove her Orioles cap while sitting in the Yankees owner’s box. Can you imagine such a thing?

Mashburn is a wildcat fan wannabe, basically he’s a loserville fan. Cats don’t need to pay we are the gold standard of college bball for real. If the kid is trouble Cal wouldn’t recruit him. We got #4 and #7 this year wouldn’t hurt to get #1 and we have as good a chance as anyone but if we don’t we still got plenty. Time for #9 cause we’re always in the hunt.
