We officially have a decision date for Kentucky’s top point guard option in the class of 2021.

Five-star senior TyTy Washington, the nation’s No. 12 overall prospect in ESPN’s latest player rankings, will announce his commitment on May 15.

Washington scheduled his commitment date on Twitter this afternoon.

Washington, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound guard out of Phoenix, Arizona, recently narrowed down his decision down to six schools, with Kentucky joining the likes of Arizona, Baylor, Kansas, LSU and Oregon.

ESPN has Washington listed at No. 12 overall and No. 2 among point guards in the class, while Rivals has him ranked No. 32 in the class and No. 6 at his position and 247Sports has him ranked No. 33 overall and No. 4 at his position.

“His parents raised him the right way, he’s built tough. Like Ford tough, he’s built that way,” Washington’s head coach at AZ Compass Prep, Ed Gipson, told KSR. “He’s going to take what he wants, he’s not going to back down from anybody. He’s a dog, a bonafide dog.”

Gipson feels Washington would easily be able to handle the pressure that comes with being a point guard at Kentucky, as it’s something he’s done his entire life.

“It’d be no problem for him. The kid, he’s handled (pressure) his whole life. The shooting, being able to get to his spots, that just comes to him naturally. But it’s the intangible stuff (that separates him),” Gipson added. “He’s the type of kid to take a charge, even though he’s the best player on the team. That’s the stuff that wins championships, and that’s what he brings. He’s always been a winner.

“… He’s a guy you want in your corner. If you’re in a foxhole, you want TyTy Washington there with you. That’s what you need to know right there.”

ESPN draft analyst Jonathan Givony told KSR that he’s a big fan of Washington’s game, specifically pointing out his basketball IQ and competitive nature.

“I like TyTy Washington a lot. He has an extremely high basketball IQ, he just really knows how to play,” he told KSR. “He’s a winner, he’s competitive, he makes other guys better, he can shoot off the dribble. He’s got good size, he’s got length, he really has a lot of things that you look for from a point guard that age.”

Watch him work below:

Come on down, TyTy.

Wow. Somebody’s wrong. Maybe both. I was just commenting on how different the mock drafts are for Isaiah Jackson, and now we see these differences of opinion. Who are we supposed to listen to? I guess there is no “right” answer, but the opinions shouldn’t be this different, not if they know what they’re talking about.

Rating talent is a highly subjective undertaking and discrepancies can be due to “eye of the beholder” perspectives. Given that, I’m not sure there is a huge disparity between overall #12 and #32, and position #2 and #6. Sometimes we look for precision in areas that are inherently imprecise. The exceptions are those superlative talents that draw consistent evaluations. .

The lack of summer travel ball last year makes ranking these players kind of a crap shoot, at best, right now.

Rivals is usually the ones that are more accurate. Seems ESPN will show fans to DUKE and UNC commits. They jump up the rankings soon as the verbally to one of those 2. It seems though following rankings etc… ESPN seems to be way off on UK recruits and they all ways fall in rankings after UK gets a verbal. Example Collins is a top 5 player ESPN has him at like 17 or some shit. Lol dude plays like Durant on offense and in D he plays like Noel but there are 16 players better then that. I am not buying it. I think Rivals had him at high as 7 or 8 at one point. That is more accurate but I think he is even. Enter then that. We shall see but no matter we need TYTY no doubt.

Vader is right. I’ll never forget how ESPN had Wall at no. 3(!) in their rankings. Such a joke.

Maybe you read somewhere he plays like KD but I doubt very seriously his high school coach or even AAU allows him to be a pull up jump shooter like KD. He’s an inside guy. Now maybe he has the potential to become a KD type player but don’t get your hopes up.

Jack, I am sensing that there is not a lot of optimism on the Kentucky side of things, or perhaps UK is in better shape than I know?

Washington becomes a Cat—-this is why Hickman bailed

@GM1978 – I’d like to think your comment is reasonable. Right now I’d grasp any straw if it meant we’d land a decent PG. But, Hickman and Washington are friends and, reportedly, talked of playing alongside each other. Given the lack of competition at PG currently on our team, pretty sure these two wouldn’t think their opportunity playing together would be limited. I’m afraid the delay in Washington’s decision might mean he’s been talking to Hickman to see where he’s leaning.

This feels like a pivotal moment in the outlook for UK’s upcoming season. Maybe it isn’t, and Cal brings in some great portal options, but right now this feel very important.

Sorry, if I’m him I’m going to Baylor not Kentucky. And it hurts for me to say that……

It hurts me to agree with you. Why go with a 9-16 team in need of a serious reset when you can go with the national champion?
It’s imperative that we improve our brand…and quickly…if we hope to be a top destination for elite talent.

Baylor just won a Natty and has lost like 3 games in two years. We just failed to qualify for the NIT and NBA scouts are saying our offensive system is “archaic.”

Last NCAA tourney appearance we lost to an 9-seed Kansas St team and our roster is currently a mess.

Yeah Baylor would be the smart bet right now.

Bosch you are very wrong my friend. We lost in the elite 8 in OT

I wouldn’t put too much weight in last years record. When Cal arrived, he took UK to the elite 8 following us being a #4 seed in the NIT. Following 2013 (NIT), we went to the Championship game. Just relax and see what Cal does.

Depends on whether he considers college to be a destination rather than a launch pad to the NBA. Yeah, we don’t have much in the way of prospects from last year’s team, but Quickley has been doing pretty well.

Seems like he’s ours just from what’s been going on lately with our recruiting . I like when we compete for a player against the cheating schools LSU, Arizona etc. means he’s tops

Uhhh I think you forgot Kansas sir…..and no i hate being grouped in with the cheaters. It looks like hes for sale and listening to the offers and we are a bidder

Blueblood, if that was the case, and we were a “bidder”, then how are we missing out on all these kids? You mean to tell me that UK doesn’t have deeper pockets than all these other schools?

Our last tournament appearance we lost in the elite 8…

I hope we get him, but we really don’t develop guards like we used to, and these kids hear it from rival recruiters. From our last three classes of Guards/ Wings, only Herro and Quickly advanced beyond their high school ratings. Hagans, Maxey, Juzang, Whitney, Askew, Boston, and Clarke all either transferred or saw their draft stock drop after being here a year. I hope Jai Lucas and our new Assistants can turn that trend around.
