10 Things to Know About the UT-Martin Skyhawks

Tonight at 7 p.m., Kentucky will take on the UT-Martin Skyhawks in the final game of the Bluegrass Showdown. Being the intrepid reporter that I am, I spent the morning scouring the internet to find out all I can about tonight’s opponent.

1. They’re also undefeated in the Bluegrass Showdown

Like Kentucky, the Skyhawks beat Cleveland State, Canisius, and Duquesne, although their games were just a tad bit closer than ours:

2. They beat Duquesne on a buzzer-beater

Senior Jacolby Mobley capped a 16-point second half comeback for the Skyhawks with this 25-foot three at the buzzer to give them the 66-63 win at Duquesne Wednesday night. It was exciting:

3. Jacolby Mobley is their best player

The senior from Starkville, Mississippi had a career-high 25 points vs. Duquesne and is averaging 18.7 points per game this season. He currently ranks third in the nation in three-point field goal attempts (59) and eighth in three-point field goals made (21). So, he will shoot a lot.

He may be their best player, but he is not their best tweeter:

4. They loss to Ole Miss by three on November 11

This is the Skyhawks’ second game against an SEC opponent so far this season. They opened the season with an 86-83 loss at Ole Miss, forcing the Rebel Black Bears to commit 24 turnovers.

5. This is the second time Kentucky’s played them

The last time Kentucky played UT-Martin was on November 26, 1994, when the Cats won 124-50. For some perspective, Julius Randle was born three days later.

6. Their coach is Anthony Stewart

In addition to looking a little like Alfonso Ribeiro, Stewart is in his first season as head coach after serving as associate head coach for two seasons.

7. They’re off to their best start in 14 years

The Skyhawks are 5-1, which makes this their best start through six games since the 2002-03 season. The only other time that UT Martin also started the season off at 5-1 in the Division-I era (since 1992) was in 2001-02.

8. They had their walk-through at Rupp Arena last night

In other news, I’m still trying to get used to that new logo on the floor.

9. They’re fourth in the nation in assists

The Skyhawks have 118 assists this season, or 19.7 per game, which is good enough for fourth in the country. For comparison, Kentucky has 92 assists through five games, which ties them with BYU for 18th nationally.

10. They’re going to lose

But, one day, they’ll get to tell their kids how they played the 2017 National Champion Kentucky Wildcats in Rupp Arena. That’s pretty cool.
