University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

You mad, Louisville?

It wasn’t that long ago when Louisville fans were kissing Derek Willis’s feet and calling him the next great thing to wear Cardinal red. Card Nation was absolutely certain that Willis would be throwing his L’s up once he left Bullitt East. CERTAIN. I mean, he decommitted from Purdue just to go to Louisville, right?! Pitino goes to almost all of his games! His dad is a diehard Louisville fan! He’s going to save the Louisville program!  L yeah!

Whoa der.

It appears Louisville fans have had a sudden change of heart. Now, the kid from right down the road is overrated and they never wanted him to begin with.

You mad, Louisville?

Just a few posts I found on a quick browse through UofL message boards…

UofLTheElite: “I honestly never wanted him at all. He is extremely overrated. He will ride the pine at UK, no doubt about it.”

HorsePig3: “I was never a big fan of him anyway, but he’s a plodder that will be recruited over and will at best be behind Wiltjer. Plus, he really doesn’t fit into our system or theirs well at all.”

cardinal2378: “maybe we lucked out with this one and those dopes down the road dont know what they are getting into. They are just after our recruits, well they can have our overrated ones.”

wileysthumb: “I guess I’m just a schmuck, because I don’t see it. He would ride the pine at UK or UL.”

UL808605: “I would rather have an immediate impact player”

Louisville21: “Enjoy riding the pine and being the team GPA booster, Derek.”

Cheer up, Baby Bro. You’ll be OK.

I’m fine with taking him. But he is no star. Watched him play 5 times and he will be a role player. He scored 4 points last week against a horrible team. Was at his last game and he poured in 4 points in the first half. They played a bad team full of short players. I doubt he will be a top 50 player when it is all said and done. I think Cal took him to stick it to 3 stacks.

of course someone saw him play and they have a better eye for talent than Cal and half the scouts in the country… smh.

I for one love the idea of having more 2-4 ye players to mix with our 1 and dones. of course some idiots just want 7 players every year I guess.

  22. DesignatedDrinker
    5:35 pm January 20, 2012 Permalink

Fact is, is he is a top recruit. You land 4 or 5 a year and some will pan out quicker than others. Louisville fans are unaware of this strategy, because they are lucky to get 1 player a year that would get quality minutes at UK. It is up to Willis how good he will become, not the fans, so the speculation by UL fans is just a side effect of their inferiority complex, which they clearly should have.

I never wanted Willis. He is way to talented to be on a “Louisville First” team. Who needs kids with natural ability? They rarely let me berate them and break them down. I’d rather have 5 Rozier’s than 1 Willis. If I have real talent on my team, then the losses actually look like my fault. Not our untalented players!

It was during the summer AAU games that Willis’ stock went up. He played very well against the elite players. Not every player UK signs can be a one and done, you need some 3 and 4 year players for continuity. I think Willis fills this need very well.

With all the complaints that Cal only recruits one and done players, I think Willis will be the perfect fit for the Cats. He’ll be a solid player for us for 4 years. As much as I love get all these 5 star recruits, we still need to have solid 4 star recruits that’ll give us solid minutes and be a solid foundation for our team. At least with players like Willis and Wiljter it’ll give Cal some confidence at playing more players off our bench instead only playing 6-7 players. Analysts on ESPN say that our top 6 can beat Syracuse’s top 6, but our top 9 can’t handle their top 9. We need solid players like Willis to fill out our roster. I’m glad to see a good athlete like this coming to out program.

A very good pick up for UK. He likely won’t be phenom freshman – but he could be a 3-4 year player and Kentucky desperately needs that. (We’ll get a taste of what it’s like without that next year)

If Willis can become the next Scott Padgett – the chances of UK getting another banner go way up. I’d rather have a Padgett-type player for 3-4 years – than most one-and-dones for a single year.

Here’s the thing about Willis – He plays on a VERY GOOD Bullitt East team – which means the offense isn’t designed stricly around him. Many DIV 1 prospectst have their stats padded because the coach centers everything around them.

Willis’ high school team is a contender for the Sweet 16 this year and next – and they play TEAM ball! That’s good for Willis as he develops overall basketball skills – skills that include solid defense, screening, passing, ball handling, an inside and outside game.

Plus – he’s 16. He’s gonna grow more, get better and he’s got a season and a half left of high school ball.

As of today – he wouldn’t even be a threat to play many minutes today – but not many 16-year-olds would. Let’s see how he is at 18, 19, 20 yeas old.

    I’m excited by this recruit.

Now let’s go find another one like him – have a couple of 3-4 year type players.

Some of you bitch that Cal recruits only one and dones, but when he does have a GREAT pick up from a 5 star instate kid, you bitch! Derek Willis is a more athletic Kyle Wiltjer, but I’m sure Wiltjer’s jump shot is better. He is only a junior! He still has another summer of AAU, more time to talk to Cal to work on the things he needs to, he can get stronger, probably grow more, he will be a great asset in the future. Many of you complain about not having many veteran players, well, he will be just that. I’d rather have Derek Willis than Chris Walker any day, and since Cal obviously took Willis over Walker even with his whining and complaining should tell you that he sees something special in Willis, just like he did in Harrellson when he kept him on the team…and we see how that panned out. Some of you UK fans really piss me off with your blatant ignorance. Welcome to the Big Blue Nation, Derek! Help bring in some other big names for us.

I’m not sure Cal really “saw” anything in Harrelson until Harrelson showed it too him. Harreslon was a good, solid player as a sophomore transfer. He had a REALLY good outside shot – but it was great that he was forced inside his senior year because of a lack of depth at UK.

Circumstances benefitted Jorts more than mere coaching. I’m not trying to deminish Cal with this post – just trying to give more credit to Harrelson.

He waws a good player from the get go – and circumstances afforded him the opportunity to show it.

He’s a wonderful story! UK needs more like him.

If Cal is intent on recruiting 2-3 one and dones each year – he MUST get a couple of long-term players.

Again – UK does not go to the Elite 8 two years ago without Liggins, Patterson, Perry S., Miller, and they don’t make it to the Final Four last year without Harrelson, Miller, Liggins.

Yes – the superfrosh are vital – but so are those experienced guys.

Next year – unless Hood really suprises or Harrow is beyond belief – Kentucky will have a relatively down year – simply because there is no seasoned vets on the team.

If watching Josh Harrelson grow didn’t teach you that your dreams can come true with hard work, dedication and playing against the best of the best – you haven’t learned anything since Cal has been here. This kid could be a lottery pick his sophomore season if it comes together for him. While the message boards are usually littered with the greatest sports minds of the internet, people need to chill. 76. Define good.

Does a kid have to be NBA caliber to be valuable to an elite college team?

Lofton, Harangody were GREAT college players but didn’t make the pros – at UK – look at guys like Shepherd, Jack Givens, Anthony Epps – those guys were instrumental in winning NCAA Titles – but none had big pro careers.

Too many fans are very shallow – thinking that UK HAS to stock every incoming class with future NBA all-stars. That’s simply NOT true.

amazing that so many of my fellow cat fans are smarter than Coach Cal and better at evaluating talent – especially regarding a kid that is 17 and still a junior. I had a son go from child to young man between his junior and senior year and the athletic transformation was amazing. Let’s have fun tweaking little brother but don’t be the stereotypical dumbass uk fan and think you are better at evaluating talent than Coach Cal. Coach Cal doesn’t need to nor will he waste scholarships just to tweak little brother. You all think this is Cal’s first rodeo??? DW has potential to be a really good (not great) basketball player, more athletic than wiltjer, and more versatile than hood…Unlike Davis and Gilchrist, Willis has a ceiling, nothing wrong with that… only a couple of recruits each year have unlimited potential…
Cal is never going to have a team that is more than 7-8 deep… that is his program… Cal can be up twenty with less than three minutes to go and still have his starters in…
Willis could play the 3 or the 4 spot with a little weight gain…
Players who want to succeed can, Cal gives them a chance, but they have to make the most of it…

Not sure why everyone is so worried about next year… we will have an above average guard harrow, a great scorer in goodwin, an athletic freak in Cauley, a seasoned Wiltjer, and the possibility of a returning player to be named later…

  83. old_school
    8:40 pm January 20, 2012 Permalink

Wiltjer will not be seasoned. He’s getting very limited playing time this year – and Harrow will have had a year away from the game – no guarantee there won’t be a little rust.

The other guys will be freshmen. As hyped and as talented as they are – freshmen are never a guarantee.

Our most experienced guy returning (barring a surprise and one of the guys forgoes the draft this season) will be Wiltjer and Polson and maybe a rejuvenated Hood.

~let’s all just sit back in our computer chairs and question the best recruiter in college basketball. After all we are (insert your job title here) which makes us all better qualified and more knowledgeable in recruiting than Cal.~

To all those who are hammering this kid, I just have two words: Scott Padgett. He was in no one’s top 100 in HS but when his UK career ended he was a first round draft pick. From what I’ve heard about Willis he has a lot of skills that can be built on. Cal will coach him up. If he can turn Jorts into an NBA player, he will do very well with Willis.

as of now Marquis Teague HAS to come back… and Jones isn’t that high on anyone’s draft board right now.

Jones probably puts up the numbers to go pro, but teague probably isn’t a first rounder right now.

If teague were to stay we would have something like this.

    Teague – 5*
    Goodwin – 5*
    Bazz/Bennett/Pollard – 5*
    Poythress -5*
    Wiltjer- 5*
    Harrow – 5*
    Hood – 4*
    Cauley -4*

That’s an 8 man rotation of. six 5 stars and two 4 stars…. Not to mention there’s a limited chance of another surprise. return.

a very going but still very talented team and IMO both Goodwin and Poythress are still slightly underrated.

even if teague leaves we still start five 5 stars

Wonder if they will show Cal’s fat [email protected] on the treadmill, sweating like a pig, on today’s broadcast?

SagaciousMind (comment 71) +1 Well said.

Nba Scout – We could use a lot less “fans” like you. You act like the whole roster should be nothing but 1 and done types. Show me one school, just one, that can do that. Then when a player does not live up to your expectations, you publicly trash them. Oh yeah, that’s some excellent thinking by a “fan”. Please pick another school to support.
