Kentucky Sports Radio

University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

Yeah, we know.

Archie Goodwin is being so Archie Goodwin this afternoon at the NBA Draft Combine. He’s struggling with his shot and I saw him hit the deck a couple times.

ESPN’s Chad Ford said on the coverage that he’s concerned with how Archie didn’t improve all season under John Calipari, when most players do in that system. Fran Fraschilla said Archie is one of those guys who doesn’t like to be yelled at.

There’s still a lot of time between now and the draft to make a better impression.

Burr, Archie. Burr.

Why bash Archie? Matt already tweeted this out. No need to keep up the negative posts.

I thought Archie showed some improvement late in the season, to be fair. A little more under control, better rebounding, etc. He just needs more time. But I like his upside.

    Uncoachable.

Let’s all maintain at least some sense of objectivity here.

Archie sucks and flipping burgers in 3 years max. Undersized, can’t handle it, can’t shoot it, terrible defender, uncoachable, got seemingly 75% of his shots blocked at the college level, can’t stay on his feet.

There isn’t an NBA skill to be found. Any GM that drafts him in the first round will also be out of a job in a few years.

It’s one thing to trash Archie with inaccurate criticisms and wishes of failure, it’s another to recognize his shortcomings as a player. Personally, I like Archie. But the fact that he didn’t flourish under Cal is a point we all know too well. He may not like being yelled at, but nothing else seemed to work either. I wish him all the best, but sadly, many predicted this.

If bashing missed recruits hurts recruiting, what does patronizing former players do?

even with all of his problems Archie has more upside for the NBA than Russ

When Archie had it in his mind to find open teammates and not just shoot, his game elevated significantly. All the talent is there, but I think he’s going to have to commit to playing for a team and not himself or he’ll never see an NBA court.

Bust. Never should have been recruited to Kentucky. More of a Memphis type player.

Shot mechanics can be corrected if the player is open to criticism and is willing to work to improve. Decision making typically comes with experience. The big question: is Archie ready and willing to listen to some criticism and respond in a positive manner to correct his shortcomings, so that he can someday gain that experience at the next level? Only Archie can answer that one. Kid has a lot of upside, but he also seems to have some attitude issues that might keep him from realizing that potential. Hope I’m wrong.

Archie spent half of last season on the floor…. He fell down every time he drove and attempted a layup

Is anyone surprised? Archie would have a hard time with playing time at UK how can he expect anything else. I am really feeling sorry for him. He has heart…gives his all….maybe NBA team will feel they can improve his skills over time. Only thing I feel good about is this should serve as a caution for all recruits who think they are ready.

I thought Archie improved last year. But slowly. I remember one time that the coaches forbid him from taking the ball to the basket for a layup in practice, hoping that he’d develop a midrange, or an outside game, or even a stop and pop from 7-12 feet out. I recall how that still didn’t spill over into games. I did notice that he tried to pass a little more as the season progressed.

I was wondering if he was one of the uncoachable ones. We know Harrow was one. Who was the other? Well, since Archie is not here and Poythress still is, I wonder if that’s the answer. I don’t know. But I do know mechanically Archie’s free throw shooting was terrible. He never bent his knees, never got any “lift” motion out of his legs, and instead shot strictly with his arms, with very little arch.

If he hasn’t corrected that yet, that can mean only one thing: HE IS REFUSING TO LISTEN TO WHAT CORRECTIONS IN HIS SHOT HE NEEDS TO MAKE. He’s had weeks, even months to correct the technique of his shot, but still hasn’t. Not a good sign for Archie. It is not hard to force yourself to put more arch on your shot. It is not hard to bend your knees. So that means he’s stubborn and doesn’t want to listen (uncoachable), or he’s got some mental issue with change. Neither one bode well for him.

Even with Archie being out of control a lot, he is STILL so much better than that R. Smith guy on the Card team! WAY BETTER!!! After only one year under Cal!

In my opinion, Archie has a ton of talent, but like many players in this AAU era he lacks the fundamental skill set and basic knowledge of how the game flows. Like others before have said, I think Archie can be a serviceable NBA player if he puts his ego aside and allows those coaches to mold him into what they need him to be.

#24 He has a lot of growing up to do to become serviceable. I wish him the best but, I don’t believe a NBA team is going to use a first round pick on him. Good Luck Archie, I hope you grow up.

Archie will get it all worked out eventually, I hope. It will hurt him, though, when scouts see he is having the same problems now that he had during the year.

  29. KevinM

Archie will be fortunate to get in the 1st round…draftexpress has him at 18 to Atlanta….nbadraft.net has him 37 to Washington, which is probably more realistic. Perhaps he starts becoming a defender to get a real look.

Goodwin was good at one thing at UK. He could drive and fall down. He had on jump shot. He will not make an NBA player for along long time if at all. NOT BASHING JUST STATING FACTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am starting to think he will go undrafted. He was one of the most overrated players at UK in recent memory. He has the flattest shot I have seen. I never understood why the coaches could not work with him on this. A little arch for Archie would have gone a long way. He was also very low keyed and lacked any killer instinct on defense, not a good trait for a guy who could be on the fringe in the draft. He can dunk good if he is wide open run out but that is about all he has going for him. He should have been a 4 year player at UK. I think a Europe league is in his future.

Gotta think Archie is holding back a little and doesn’t want to show his entire skills set just yet. He’s holding back and wants the better teams to trade up and take him early in the 2nd round. Smart move?

Archie’s shot has always been terrible. His idea of basketball is dunk, dunk, dunk, dunk, dunk. Can’t do much else besides that.

Archie set the world record for no look shot clock wangers last year. Look for Archie playing for the Macedonian Mud cats after his short stint of riding the pine in the NBA. Some things you can not hide…he just does not understand how to play team BB.

If you could just put Polson’s head on Archie’s body.
