Yahoo Sports: “Defending champ Kentucky headlines this year’s list of NCAA tournament snubs”

Jeff Eisenberg of Yahoo Sports compiled a list of the 5 best teams left out of this year’s NCAA tournament. With the power conferences taking the backseat this year, a lot of big names made the list. Eisenberg’s list of 5 included:

1. Tennessee

2. Kentucky

3. Virginia

4. Southern Miss

5. Maryland

2. Kentucky (21-11, 12-6, RPI: 57): For the third time in six years, the defending national champion will not be part of the NCAA tournament. Kentucky joins 2008 Florida and 2010 North Carolina in ignominy as a result of a disappointing season that started with the Wildcats in the top five of most polls and will end with them deciding whether to accept an NIT invitation. Kentucky did boast quality wins over Florida, Missouri and Ole Miss, but that wasn’t enough to make up for its flaws. The Wildcats beat nobody of consequence in non-league play and they lost too many games to middling competition Three losses against non-NCAA tournament teams in their last four games typified that problem, the most egregious a 64-48 SEC tournament meltdown against Vanderbilt.

3rd time? Pretty sure this is only the second time since 91 that Kentucky has missed the tournament, right?

One of the worst uk teams to wear the uniform. This team did not deserve to make tourny. They will most likely not even make final 4 of NIT

I hope Calipari rejects the NIT invite, this team deserves to hang up their gear, for the performance against vanderbuilt and georgia. Those are the games that cost uk a bid. This team has been terrible all year at fundamental basketball. Case in point, the number of free throws missed is ridiculous. If this team could’ve averaged 75-80% as a team especially in the big games we probly would’ve beat Louisville and Alabama and would be sitting in the NCAA field right now.

#2…I believe this is speaking of the Third National Champion in the past six seasons missing the Tourney. Florida and NC both missed after winning it all. Anyway, we will be back next season!! GO BIG BLUE!!!!

Some are saying to lay off the players, it’s not their fault, they’re “just kids”. Also it can’t be Coach Cal’s fault because he’s a great recruiter and won a title last year. So my question is, “Who’s fault is this disappointing season?”.

    8. The “just kids” is getting old to me too. Most of the blame is on the players who never clicked as a team.

8&9) can’t agree more, those “just kids” will be “just millionaires” after they ditch this program in a few months. They will show just how self serving and greedy they are (the same attitudes that caused this terrible season) when they run away after this season.

Some school(s) are always getting screwed this particular day in March. Hell the entire SEC got screwed. Our league has choked it up in the past. If the SEC gets two teams, or even one team in the Sweet 16, we can assume the committee blew it and screwed the SEC. So we shall see. Last year two #2 seeds were beaten in the first round, but these upsets are very rare. Every body loves the cinderella- VCU, Butler, George Mason kind of crap.People also play the lottery and throw money at casinos….lots of people. Keep in mind the selection process is not about selecting the best 68 teams. There are 32 teams headed for the NIT and UK should be one of them. There will be some strong teams in this tournament and the competition will do this young team some good. Tubby Smith always said, you’re never as good as you think are, and you’re never as bad as think you are, either. Please stop the whining and support MY CATS.

I think the blame can be laid on 3 players and one coach. Harrow, Goodwin and Poythres didn’t show heart in more than a couple games. Selfishness was a major problem with Goodwin and Harrow. Poythres just wasn’t in it with his head. I’ll be glad to see Goodwin and Harrow leave. I hope Poythres improves in all facets…
