Kentucky Sports Radio

University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

Would You Want Petrino at UK?

If “smugness” were a coaching skill, he’d be Bear Bryant.

Let’s play with a hypothetical for a moment.  It’s the offseason, and there’s no recruiting that we haven’t already pored over, so why not, right?

Let’s assume that Joker has a bad year this year.  I hope it doesn’t happen; I like Joker a lot.  But I think we’ll all acknowledge that this season has the potential to get pretty rough.  Now, let’s also assume that Bobby Petrino goes all year without finding employment anywhere in a coaching capacity.  The question is: if Joker is relieved, and Bobby is available, would you want to hire him?

The Case For:

Let’s be real here, the man can coach football.  If you can have that level of success at Louisville, you can do it here, too.  I’m sure of it.  The resources are a wash, and although the conference is tougher, the recruiting pipelines are a little better.  I have little doubt that in a matter of a few years, he could turn UK into a perennially ranked program.  We might not regularly win SEC titles, but that’s almost impossible here.  But we’d get to bowl games, and we’d have a good chance at winning them.  I’d say that even a BCS bowl wouldn’t be out of the question, if the stars aligned.

If UK hired Bobby Petrino, we’d be one of the few schools with competitive programs in both football and basketball.  Schools like Ohio State, Texas, and Michigan can do that more easily, simply because they have more resources.  Those schools are hugh, and their programs make a ton of money (Texas in particular).  We, on the other hand, have to be craftier about how we get football success, and Petrino seems like just the guy who could do something like that for us.

Then we get to the “poetic justice” segment of the argument: hiring Petrino would almost, almost, be a perfect retribution for Pitino leaving UK and ending up at Louisville.  The stories would be fairly similar, actually.  A school’s great, beloved coach bolts for the pros, has little success, and ends up coming back to the state.  Petrino made that additional stop at Arkansas, but that doesn’t really detract from the juiciness of that plot line.  I don’t think Petrino is as big a deal as Pitino, necessarily, but I also care a little more about basketball than I do about football.  It could go a long way in establishing the Wildcats as a good football team, and do a lot to piss of the Cards.  That sounds pretty appealing.

The Case Against:

While winning games is appealing, having Bobby Petrino as our head coach, frankly, isn’t.  If we’re acknowledging that the guy can coach, we should also acknowledge that he’s a scumbag.  A year is a long time, but do you really think people will forget about what’s just happened in the span of a season?  Again, if we’re assuming that he doesn’t get hired anywhere, why do you think that is, and why does it sound so plausible?  Because he has tremendous baggage, that’s why.  The man showed little to no morality in his recent actions, by not only spending some quality time with another man’s fiancee, but also by having her on his staff.  Sounds pretty familiar, right?  Head coach has an affair with somebody close to the program, and gets caught?  For all the trash we give Louisville fans for “Ricky Three Stacks”, you have to imagine that they’d be able to fire most of that right back at us, and that doesn’t sound enjoyable.

A friend reminded me yesterday, “He cheated on his wife, not at football.”  That’s true, and it’s a valid point.  A man’s personal life is just that, and I don’t know of any evidence that indicates Petrino has shady tactics when it comes to coaching, except bolting for better jobs.  In an era where even extremely popular football coaches are under scrutiny for all manner of devious action (like Jim Tressel and Joe Paterno), is cheating on your wife really all that bad?

Well, like it or not, Kentucky has a stigma already.  We knew it would happen when we hired Calipari.  Even though we’ve gotten to know Cal, and we’ve seen the great side of him that everyone else seems to ignore, people see us as the program who will hire anybody if it means we’ll win some games.  They don’t like Cal, and they certainly won’t like Petrino.  If we hire Bobby, we can expect people everywhere, and not just in Louisville, to view us as a program that doesn’t value integrity.  We’ll be the new national villain.  Is that fair?  No, I stand by Cal fully and think he’s a great man, and not just a great coach.  But people outside would disagree, and Petrino would just give them ammunition.

Verdict

Personally, I’d rather Joker just win a bowl game this year.  But, provided the above scenario, I still wouldn’t hire Bobby Petrino.  Cal has shown that he’s a man of character, and that’s enough for me to ignore the negative attention he gets from those who don’t know any better.  But Petrino?  I’ve seen none of that from him.  Granted, I know less about him, but it’s hard to ignore recent events that speak to the man’s character.  I just don’t see how giving people more reason to hate our school, and attack our principles, is worth winning a few football games.  Even if it does mean a BCS bowl.

I say stay away from Bobby.  But, reasonable minds could differ.

I could care less what someone does in their personal life. Seriously people, if he cheats on his wife or not, how is that any of our business? The hiring of his mistress was very stupid, and that is cause for termination. However, do you think he has learned his lesson? Well, I would take that gamble. At least his wins aren’t getting vacated, he didn’t get Arkansas in any NCAA trouble. Joker belongs in the MAC, not in the SEC. I say sure, I would love to see what (not who) he would do at UK.

Do not want him here. Had to live through the scandals with Mumme and Sutton. We need a coach that’s going to follow the rules. Yes, Petrino broke a rule – hiring his mistress. If he felt okay doing that, then NCAA violations would surely follow. We need a football coach that is going to represent the school well, a la John Calipari.

Petrino, went 10 – 2 last season, but at least 4 games were close enough to go the other way. Would you want him if they had gone 6-6? Compounded by the fact that people are already so willing to call us shady because we have Cal, it would just amplify things in such a way, that people would think that we have no standards as a university.

I say no. Not just because of his whole situation that just happened, but the circumstances under which he left the NFL too. This wasn’t just a bad situation where he was trying to cover his affair from getting out and got caught red handed, with what happened in Atlanta it shows he has a history of unsavory behavior that would inevitably not end well. Cheating on his wife or not, it’s his behavior towards other programs that matters, not what he does behind closed doors with women. For that reason, I think he’d be a very bad decision and there’s no way Mitch would hire a guy like Petrino. In other news, Joker is still a terrible coach and I do wish they would replace him.

If the latest tryst was his only known mistake, then in a year or so, I think he gets a second chance, even at UK, but his past is riddled with very poor choices and lies. Because I think Mitch would never consider him, this is one of the message board exercises in futility.

But to all those clamoring for him because they think Joker isn’t getting it done, I ask: Why does this have to be a Joker v. Petrino thing?

I for one like Joker and still am optimistic we can succeed given time. But that aside, if we tank this year like a lot of the downers seem to think, then Joker probably gets fired/resigns and we go find a new coach. Just NOT PETRINO.

    12) It’s not that he “just cheated on his wife”. The guy is a scumbag. He has never told the truth about anything. Evidently cheating on his wife has been a habit with him which is not surprising considering he doesn’t tell the truth to recruits when he takes a commitment if he can recruit over them. He has no respect for others at all. The way he left the Atlanta Falcons by putting a note in the players’ lockers. He doesn’t respect anyone and that’s how he could do what he did to his wife and family.

    42) This is not merely a state of “messing up” with Petrino. When a person messes up they do something out of character without fully realizing the ramifications of their actions. For Petrino, this is totally within his character. His character or lack thereof will never change. That’s why anyone who hires him will just be waiting for the next episode of his distasteful actions to occur.

So, the day after the championship I ordered 2 t-shirts from theKSRShop.com. As of today they haven’t arrived. So, I called the number at Fan Outfitters. I’m told that they haven’t shipped yet (even though my account on their website says they have been exported). They put the blame on Nike and offer to ship the one they DO have in stock, refund my money for the other shirt, and call me if they get things straightened out with Nike.

I wonder how much longer they would have kept me hanging if I hadn’t called. Pretty crappy customer service, if you ask me. Well, you didn’t but I told you anyway.

The last time I ordered from the KSR shop, I ordered 2 shirts: 1 was short sleeve, but I received a long sleeve. The other was another short sleeve, yet the shirt I got wasn’t even the one I ordered. From now on I will buy from Nike directly, since they sell the same shirts on their site. Also, Kennedy’s is great with shipping, and their selection isn’t bad either. What I don’t like about Bobby is that he lied to his employer, and that is a strike against him.

He bailed on the Falcons with 3 games left on his only season in the NFL, he didn’t have the decency to hang around for the last 3 games, or even to man up and tell the players/owners he was leaving, he had someone tape a fax to the lockers. The affair is worse than just cheating on its wife, its involving a former student that he got a job in the athletics department by lying to his AD.

Amazing that so many Wildcat fans would trade winning a few games vs. hiring a person of such low moral character….Having said that Kentucky doesn’t hire UL’s sloppy seconds that’s Jurichs job. Next I’d point out the perception that the majority of us have had to defend when UK hired Calipari that he was scum as well…..but there’s a hugh difference between perception and reality. And the cold hard reality is everything that’s been said about Petrino is true unlike Cal. Personally I think we’re better than that. And should hold ourselves and the University of Kentucky to a higher standard. JMO.

My answer is YES and here is why:
-We will never get a coach whose name will bring in recruits and that is the only way to take our program to another level (bc we have no recruiting base in-state).
-After some success, he will leave quickly anyway. Let him put us on the map and take his talents and low character elsewhere.
-All of you talking about a “higher standard” at UK are also on here complaining about the state of the football program.
-Only option to get a BIG NAME coach to Lexington is if he is damaged goods.

UL fans shoot off about that already, we should be used to it by now. Quite frankly, it only makes beating them that much sweeter in my mind. If I was Mitch I would dump Joker right now and hire Petrino. Not necessarily as a permenant option, just someone to take the program to the next level. Maybe this will take him down a notch, Rick seemed like a different person during the Tourney. If anything will bring Petrino back to earth, this incident is it. The trash talk that would come would be out of jealousy and hatred, they wouldn’t necessarily believe it. I still have UL fans who tell me they pity us because our whole team is leaving and we didn’t get to know them. Apparently our title means nothing. Haters are going to hate, Petrino would win and win quickly, that would make UL fans lives miserable, and I can’t think of anything I would enjoy more. Except maybe to repeat and get #9.

    1. This is never going to happen 2. IF UK has to hire a guy like Petrino, then that just shows how desperate & how far behind UK program is to everybody else. Listening to Barnhart the other day on the show (being in his position on this subject can’t be fun), he already knows this year is going to be a disaster & e knows he is going to have to fire Joker, but his hands are currently tied.

People, our program is desperate, we all would be better off if we admit that. We stink, we went from being slightly above average to a whipping post in about a year. Petrino would fix that immediately. Morals aside, people make mistakes. Nick Saban had a similar reputation with leaving places before Alabama. I don’t think hiring him was a mistake. We could be a player in the SEC in about three years with Petrino. Some of these people must not be football fans, or are just too scared of getting their feelings hurt by ESPN or Louisville fans. We have a possibility to be a good team, but we won’t take a risk. We have nowhere to go but up, Petrino doing something stupid would not take us down anymore. We can’t go any lower! Is Joker a good guy? Yes, but that is not a qualification to coach football. #HIREPETRINO!!!

It all comes down to what is more important: winning football games or the moral integrity of a program. I would like to hope that most people’s answer would be our program’s integrity. I hate losing just as much as the next Kentucky fan, but Petrino is not the answer. Regardless of his terrible personal decisions, he is a LIAR professionally as well. With Mitch Barnhart here, he won’t be hired.

No way, he bolted to as auburn’s oc to Ul, he bolted from Ul to the pros left Ul in shambles. He failed in the pros and he was a dirtbag at Arkansas. Thanks but no thanks

I’d say yes because at this point I’m almost willing to do anything to save our football program before Joker ruins it. If Petrino can be successful as he was at Louisville, he can be successful at Kentucky even though the SEC is beyond superior against the Big East.

I would hire him in a heartbeat who cares if he cheated on his wife, hell John F. Kennedy cheated on his wife all the time and no one cared. Its business and with him we might actually win more than 1 or 2 games next season. He has never had any wins vacated either.

I’m not a UK fan, just lived in the area for a long time, so every once in a while like to see what my friends are reading on here. I’m actually a HUGE Michigan fan (and am admittedly one of those guys that can’t stand Calipari, but congrats on you NC), and I appreciate the praise for UM being a school that can compete well in both sports (especially since the whole Ed Martin scandal has settled)….Obviously, I’m far more of a football fan and would be totally disgusted if Mich hired a coach like Petrino. I advise y’all not to even mess around with someone who isn’t sold out to make KY into a real football program, we as Michigan fans learned this lesson from Rich Rodriguez (who bolted from WVU for the next best thing and failed miserably). Don’t hire mercenary coaches. You need someone at the helm who has a real passion to bring your program into the limelight, and to compete year-in-year-out. one that will pour his heart and soul into the players and the program to get it to that level, and that might take some time on Mitch’s part to do so. No quick fixes with Petrino b/c this guy has just about the worst track record I’ve ever seen for a football coach. He literally left a job mid-season b/c his star QB (vick) was in trouble and he saw a greener pasture in Arkansas. He also walked on L-Ville overnight. Now he pulls this crap at Arkansas…..Don’t listen to people who say it was a Personal mistake, not a Football mistake, it was both. When you are in that kind of spotlight, you have to be held accountable for personal issues, you just do…UM prides itself on hiring men of integrity to lead its programs (obviously we’ve made a few mistakes with guys like Steve Fisher, Gary Moeller and Rich Rod), and I think it would be best for you all to do so as well, even if it means a bit of rebuilding, and the tearing down of everything has to take place. Don’t put the mark on your program that Hal Mummy already did. Go find yourselves someone that will win the hearts of the fans, players, and the rest of his coaches, and does so with integrity.

As a UK fan and a huge Atlanta Falcons fan I offer a resounding NO. With the Falcons no player was allowed to speak to him directly and talking during team flights/meals was prohibited. Not to mention he abandoned the team 13 games into his first season, lowlife all the way around.

Anybody that would want Petrino at UK would sell your soul to the devil, for a blonde bimbo and $20K. It’s OK to be a UK fan, but are you really serious about stepping so low that you would accept a liar, a cheat, and a jerk so you could win a football game. If so, then the name KENTUCKY means nothing to you and you should move out of this State. I’d rather lose 10 games a year than win 10 and say Bobby Petrino was the UK coach. Have a little respect for the State of Kentucky! Petrino walked away from Louisville, he walked away from Atlanta, he was FIRED from Arkansas, and a few of you think, what…he would stay at UK for more than two years? He would have us on NCAA probation, sleep with a few coed’s, and bale for parts unknown, leaving us with a 10 year clean up. Really people, don’t be D U M B!
