Wondering how our good buddy Kyle Wiltjer is doing?

The guy who will go down as the Stacey Poole of this recruiting class (the forgotten man), Kyle Wiltjer, is having himself quite the senior season in Oregon.  Wiltjer is averaging 22.5 ppg and has scored over 20 points in 6 of his team’s 8 games.  Wiltjer’s Jesuit High team has only 1 loss, and that was to national power Dematha by 1 point.  Kyle “Never Gonna” Wiltjer wrapped up his 2010 year with a smooth 28 point, 8 rebound performance against Lincoln.

And in case you hadn’t watched Wiltjer in a high school setting, or heard him speak, here is a highlight package from a couple weeks ago.

where is the bashing??? I don’t see it…on a more local front…I live in Oregon and bleed blue…granddad and dad were UK alumni…been a fan since before I could walk…sat wit pops watching Issel when just a wee lad…so it really warms my heart to see UK recruiting in Oregon…and Oregon kids going to UK…I hope that it continues and a pipeline is set up…so that UK can play some Oregon teams from time to time and play here a couple of times more…that would be great…and go Jorts…

I didn’t think anything of the above mentioned was mean. Wiltjer doesn’t have the same “status” as say, Teague..I’m not saying he’s not as good a player. More ppl know who our other 2011 recruits are than Wiltjer on a national level. I can’t wait to see them all play, especially Wiltjer ! Go Cats!

First, Wiltjer comes in as a consensus top 20 national recruit. Poole did not. Secondly, it strikes me that the comments were made without the benefit of having actually seen Wiltjer play. I have seen him play and, if anything, he may be underrated. I think making comments about his status as a future UK player without benefit of more information, or with information, is ludicrous. If this is what is meant by covering UK in the most ridiculous way the Intern has succeeded.

I’m excited for Kyle. He seems like a great kid and his ceiling for improvement is as high as I’ve seen. He will fit great with our offense. I love the type of kids Cal is getting now. They all seem like Great young men, especially Kyle. The kid is long and shoots the three. He will get plenty of opportunity to spot up in the corner for us and could end UL being a big time scorer when it’s all said and done. Now let’s lock up Deandre Daniels and go into next season as preseason #1.

  19. catfan11
    2:46 pm January 2, 2011 Permalink

ok, Wiltjer I think will be a very contributing player in years to come. he’s obviously not a one and done. He’s the 6th or 7th man like Doron Lamb, and you’ve seen what Lamb can do this year already coming off the bench! And due to the upcoming NBA Lockout in my opinion all of the players will stay including Jones. Also my comment on Stacey Poole is he is my favorite player this year and he might not get a lot of time but he will be a contributor in the near future.

And yes, when I think UNC 09, Kansas 08, Florida 06-07, UNC 05, UConn 04, I think non-athletic white boys.

2009 NCAA Tourney- Duke lost to Villanova, by 23.(Sweet 16)
08- lost to #7 seed West Virginia (2nd round)
07- lost to #11 seed VCU (1st round)
06- lost to #4 seed LSU (and it wasn’t really close)(16)
05- lost to #5 seed Mich State (and it wasn’t particularly close)(16)

    02 Lost to #5 seed Indiana (16).

if Enes is eligible, then where is there room for all these big guys? We only have one departing senior Josh. I don’t see Miller or Liggins leaving.

    Big Guys – Enes/Davis/Wiltjer
    Small Forward – Miller/Gilchrist/Terrence Jones
    Wing -Liggins/Jon Hood/Deandre Daniels (if)
    PG – Knight/Teague
    Shooting Guard – Lamb/Poole/Polson

Where is the room? I don’t see Jones or anyone else leaving. Hood leaving is highly unlikely. Liggins and Miller will graduate as seniors. I don’t see them leaving for the NBA. Can someone explain where we have room?

I think the “Jesus is the only way to free ice cream” guy needs to learn some reading comprehension. 50. Scholarships are not 4 year scholarships. They are for 1 year and given on a year to year basis. Usually, you see programs keep a guy for all 4 years no matter what. If Cal needs room, rest assured, polson, poole, vargas, and hood will be urged to transfer or else there may not be a scholarship waiting on them. Allowing them to transfer would be sort of a way for them to save face.

Alright, folks. Let’s break this down. All BTI said is that Wiltjer will go down as the Stacey Poole, or the forgotten man, of this recruiting class. Did BTI say the Wiltjer was a bad basketball player and that he is unworthy of our attention and respect? No and no. BTI is smart enough to know that Wiltjer is damn good (which is why this was posted in the first place). But BTI is also smart enough to know that Wiltjer will absolutely be the forgotten man, and it’s the truth. It’s not demeaning. Just like Daniel Orton was the forgotten Billy Clyde leftover as Wall and Cousins tore up the spotlight when they signed with UK, most of the focus will be on Davis, Gilchrist, and Teague (not to mention whoever stays next year). Wiltjer is really, really good but face it, he won’t be as hyped up as the other incoming players will be. Give BTI a break, he posted this so we could know how good Wiltjer is, not to argue that he will suck.
