I spent part of this evening watching the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies from Turin (or Torino depending on the day), Italy. I always love the Winter Olympics, in part because I think the sports are ridiculous (skeleton and biathlon being particularly funny) and because there are always athletes there that would never be part of other Olympic games (such as the 52 year old luger from the Virgin Islands).
But I particularly love the Parade of Nations. IT is always full of great stories, like the skier from Ethiopia who lived in the US and had to create an Ethiopian Ski Federation to get to come to the Olympics, or the fact that the Olympics is the only time North Koreans and South Koreans march together or the fact Japan has the worst athlete to medal ratio of all countries. But this year, we got something even better…..Great nicknames. The USA has a snowboarder whose nickname is “The Flying Tomato” which is pretty good as nicknames go. But nothing beats the Germans, who have a luger whose nickname is (and I am not making this up) “The Sliding White Sausage.” Now that is entertainment folks!
