Willie Nelson’s Monday News and Views

Has anyone ever worn a bandana as well as Willie Nelson?

Willie Nelson is many things. For our more mature readers, he’s the voice of a generation, whether rogue or beloved. For my generation, he’s the grandfather for which you will forgive most anything, may it be drug relapses or the occasional flatulence. Don’t get me wrong–many things for which Willie stands are illegal and therefore inappropriate, but there’s something about a seventy-nine year old spokesman that makes you look twice. Many people look at Willie and focus on his obvious connotations–legalization of marijuana, liberal activist, and yes, numerous arrests, but the thing we can all agree on is his music. Willie was the forefather of “outlaw country,” the rebel branch of the soapy-clean Nashville sound, which dominated the ‘waves in the early 1970’s. For those farmers amongst us, remember Willie as one of the masterminds behind Farm Aid, a well-intentioned series of concerts that started in the mid-80’s and continues today to benefit family farmers across the country and raise awareness for an industry in need.

Willie’s list of hits are as long as his gray braids (which have shortened in old age): “Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain,” “On the Road Again,” “Always On My Mind,” and “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys” to name just a very few. My favorite Willie song? It’s a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Songbird,” released in his 2006 album bearing the same name, and to this day, makes me want and iced tea and a slow dance on the patio.

So, put on your bandana, sit back, and raise a glass to the 79-year-old birthday boy.

…and then enjoy these news and views.

— I know it’s on your lips, so stop right there. There’s no new news about Anthony Bennett (sorry, internet rumors).

— However, future Cat Archie Goodwin did get a rather ugly tattoo on his arm of a clown, but I can learn to get over it. Clowns are funny, right??

— Matt has a full recruit roundup below (scroll, baby, scroll), but some names to keep an eye on this week: Montrezl Harrell, Torian Graham, Amile Jefferson, Mislov Brzoja, and the always polarizing Mark Lyons. Believe it or not, it’s time to turn our thoughts to 2013 as well, which means you need to memorize the following names: Derek Willis (been there, committed that), the Harrison Twins, Julius Randle, Jabari Parker (this is my drool-worthy 2013 crush), Troy Williams, and James Young to name a few. Williams is believed to decide this upcoming week between the Cats and the Tarheels, so keep your ears open. Even though it’s the off-season, it never is, right?

— 2014 (yes, I know) recruit Andrew Wiggins may reclassify to the 2013 class, according to Brian Flinn of Wiggins is a 6’7 small forward from Toronto who outshined many older recruits in the Nike Hoop Summit a few weeks ago. Definitely something to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.

— Keep loving Nerlens Noel, because with every BBN-related tweet and Wildcat bit of propaganda, he makes it worth your while. These are the kids programs are built around, and the fact that Nerlens is embracing that without being on campus yet speaks volumes.

— The NFL draft and subsequent deals left our former Cats scattered around the country. Here’s a list of where they ended up (draft and free agents):

Winston Guy: Seattle Seahawks (draft)
Danny Trevathan: Denver Broncos (draft)
Ryan Tydlacka: Philadelphia Eagles
Chandler Burden: Tennessee Titans
Randall Burden: Arizona Cardinals
Ronnie Sneed: Detroit Lions
Anthony Mosley: San Francisco 49ers

Add at will.

The Bat Cats lost their first series of the SEC season this weekend, dropping 2 of 3 to Vanderbilt. The Cats started out hot against the ‘Dores 5-2 on Friday night, perhaps emboldened by the Commodores’ presentation of the SEC Tournament Championship rings to their basketball players prior to the first pitch. Unfortunately, that momentum wasn’t enough to carry them through the series, but they hope to get back on the ropes Thursday against Florida at “The Cliff.”

More in the morning. For a moment, I’d like to thank Matt and Drew for all the opportunities I’ve been given with this site. It’s been a long, strange trip, but one for which I am grateful and will give my all as your new Co-Editor; on the precipice of one the biggest times of my life, I can’t think of a happier home.

See you soon.

I’m usually not one to critique the guys on the site as you guys do a fantastic job at what you do, but I mean really. Wouldn’t you do a little more research before you posted before hundreds of thousands of Kentucky fans. I know the 2 guys above pointed out the mistake, but I feel that I catch an error in every post nowadays. I’m not the writing/grammar police as I make errors every once and a while, but it’s become one of the main topic points in the comments section lately that the work has become very sloppy. This is a free resource so I can’t complain, but you guys get paid for doing this on a daily basis. I mean the post a few down states in the title “Archie Goodwin.” I’m not trying to ruffle any feathers and I truly appreciate the daily news and information, but you guys should be more knowledgeable of what you post on this site.

I appreciate the work put in my all the writers on this site. This is the ONLY website I check on a daily basis, so a few mistakes are inevitable and excusable. Thanks do much KSR for giving free info on all cats everything. Now I don’t have to waste my money on that worthless clown Marc Maggard. #WrongOnPurpose lol.

A couple of my favorite Willie songs are his covers of Paul Simon’s “Graceland” and Lyle Lovett’s “If I Was The Man You Wanted.” In fact, the whole album “Across the Borderline” on which both appear is stellar. If you like Willie at all, do yourself a favor and check it out.

“… the Grizzlies had the aforementioned 24 point lead at 95-71 with 9:12 remaining in the game. The Clippers went the rest of the way until the final possession with starters Paul and Griffin joined by reserves Bledsoe, Evans and Young… With defensive specialists Bledsoe and Evans wrapping up Conley and Randolph respectively, the much-maligned Clippers defense completely shut down Memphis the rest of the game… But it was really the defense of Evans and Bledsoe, and yes Young also, that made the difference, as evidenced by their plus/minus numbers for the game — Young was +28 in 24 minutes, Bledsoe +24 in 20 minutes and Evans +23 in 21 minutes. Wow. Just, wow.”

this site is as bad as msnbc, does every person you salute have to be a liberal? why dont you just name this kysportsliberalradio and get it over with. jones your a joke, you cant keep anything focused on uk sports without adding your political views to it or your writers having the same views as yourself. what your views are and or beliefs i couldnt care less, but to come to a uk site to try and get objective news about a team everyone can agree on has gotten down right pathetic. but as usual you can always put your spin on it to justify in your mind that you are objective and you are not playing to the liberal mindset. i hope your news and views will eventually put you out of a job, i will get my uk news elsewhere from now on and i hope others will do the same.

You know, I have followed KSR since the beginning. I have commented under various names over the years, just whatever I fell like going with at that time. I really do appreciate the work that SOME of the writers put in. Others, well they appear to do absolutely no prep work and just add lib some crap hoping to sound witty. This isn’t sports center, thank God. You are not daniel Tosh. You don’t have be funny. ESPN has almost ruined sports. Anyway, I won’t name any names, not trying to make anyone feel bad. But they should know who they are. One that I will call out by name is Ally. I call her out because she is flat killing it. Outstanding job, Ally. Great young talent. Matt, if you are smart, keep her around. I think she could be the future of your site. I like Drew, and all, but do you really want him steering the ship? Really? Just stop and think about it. Oops. I said I wasn’t going to do that. Sorry, Drew.

24–willie nelson is an american icon. a few years ago willie was found to owe the feds millions in unpaid taxes. instead of hiring a law firm to squirm out of paying up, he went on the road and worked until he paid back every nickel

@24 – The good news is that it’s still a free country, so you are not forced to visit this site, read its contents, nor to agree with its writers. Might I suggest that if you don’t like what is written here, rather than spend another minute of your time here, you move on and find another website that offers you free, up-to-date info on the Cats while not offending your obviously shallow and narrow mind. Don’t let the door hit you and your way out.
As always, great update Ms. TT. Congrats on the well-deserved promotion!

You said that Wiggins “outshined many older recruits in the Nike Hoops Summit a few weeks ago”, well, isn’t Wiggins actually already seventeen years old, which would mean that he is as old as any player that was there. He may have outshined players who are a class ahead of him, but they are not older.
