It’s too early to tell #4. That seems to be what he’s thinking at the moment, but that could change after talking with Cal, his family, or getting an idea of where he will be projected.

Not to be negative but, how’s this gonna workout with scholarships? I think we’re only allowed 12 or 13. Someone mind to break it down for me. Maybe Polson and Hood walk-on. Mays and Beckham graduate, but then what?

#12 – Hood, Polson, Long, and Malone all walk-ons. Noel, Twany, and Mays (and possibly Harrow) leave. That leaves Wiltjer, Goodwin, Poythress, and WCS. With six guys coming in, and possibly seven with a scholarship to Hawkins, that easily covers it. You’ve heard Matt say it ad nauseum – never worry about scholarships.

Scholarship Players For 2013-2014 as of MArch 20, 2013:
    1. Cauley-Stein
    2. Poythress
    3. Goodwin
    4. Hood
    5. Harrow
    6. Wiltjer
    7. Randle
    8. Andrew Harrison
    9. Aaron Harrison
    10. Young
    11. Johnson
    12. Lee
    13. Willis

    Walk-Ons: Polson, Long, Malone, Lanter

As it stands, there is no room for Nerlens if he decides to return. This, of course, is based on the assumption that all of the players that stated an intention to come back (i.e. WCS, Archie, Alex) actually do return. As you might also notice, we are now at full capacity, which means there is not a spot for Wiggins unless one of the individuals that stated an intention to return leaves. Another option could be asking one of the players on scholarship to agree to pay their own way. Although, unlikely, it is not unheard of.

Not picking on Hawkins but how many Richmond fans follow KSR. Enough already. Hawkins = Lofton. Would love to have had you for 4 years but there aren’t enough schollies this year.

I do not understand why people hate on any of the freshman from this past year. They played like Freshmen are supposed to, maybe not the ones we have been spoiled with but none the less like Freshmen. They all had moments when they showed why they were so highly recruited but also the moments that made us shake our heads. One things for sure, you can not fault the effort that WCS brought every game. So for all you who don’t want him or Goodwin and Poythress back, do the rest of us a favor and shut the hell up or get the hell out.

Wiggins will join in my opinion he has clearly stated he wants to win a title! Lets see that’s not a Kansas or North Carolina and sure as hell not at Florida st. He will join and win title number 9 he’s not worried about publicity he’s the number 1 pick regardless! If we land him we will not lose a game
! I think this actually helps us with tr wiggins recruitment.

  28. Musehobo

Ok, doing this on the fly, this years team below:
    Noel
    Hood
    Polson
    Goodwin
    Beckham
    Harrow
    Malone
    Cauley-Stein
    Lanter
    Poythress
    Long
    Wiltjer
    Mays

Mays and Beckham are out of eligibility.

Let’s go ahead and assume Noel leaves.

If we keep the rest, that’s 11. Considering Long, Lanter, Malone won’t have to have schollies, that puts us at 8. We have 7 coming in. That puts us at 15 (2 over limit)

    Our options:
    1. Put Polson or Hood or both back off schollies
    2. Hope 2 other guys leave
    3. What else?

  29. Biglaw Dawgin'
    2:06 pm March 20, 2013 Permalink

Ok, at least all our guys aren’t delirious. WCS knows he needs to stick around another year. And if he does, UK will be even more ridiculous. We do need to buy Cauley-Stein one of those kickback mechanisms for his free throws though. 39% with a stroke that nice? Come on big fella, need to be putting up about 500 FT’s a day for the next 212 days. 100,000 FT’s between now and then would bump him up to about a 70% shooter.

Actually, I agree with 31 – might be making us more attractive if he wants to win a championship. Also agree with 32 – Hood might not be a top draft pick but he loves the Blue and he has heart. We need to respect that and show him the love he deserves.

  36. Matt
    2:07 pm March 20, 2013 Permalink

    32. Scholarships are only 1 year deals. Hood wouldn’t need to give it up. It could be taken from him if necessary. Nothing is guaranteed but I hope it doesn’t come to that. I think we will have enough guys leave (NBA or transfer) that it will be fine.

  37. yevkazim
    2:07 pm March 20, 2013 Permalink

While the idea of Noel coming back in intriguing, the reality, is if he does, what can you expect from him, with just having his surgery now. A minimum of 9 month recovery time from that surgery that just happened. Remember his recovery time is not from the time of injury, but from the time of surgery. Realistically, 11 or 12 months. So at the practical bet, he wouldn’t be able to play until February next year. Look at what is going on with Derrick Rose right now. He might not be able to play at all next season.

This is going to be great next year for us and real bad for everyone else. We just came off the worst year Cal has had in over a decade and have the best recruiting class of all time coming in. Calipari will be on a mission next year to be 40-0.

  40. Musehobo
    2:09 pm March 20, 2013 Permalink

    37) What? If you think I meant I wanted Polson not to have a scholly, you’re wrong. I’m trying to figure out what’s going to happen. In my mind at least 2 others will likely go to NBA. I’m not sure what you’re saying.

  41. Matt
    2:11 pm March 20, 2013 Permalink

    46. I think 33. Just means your numbers are all wrong. You need to do some more research or just trust Cal and the staff to know what they are doing and not worry about it.

  42. Musehobo
    2:11 pm March 20, 2013 Permalink

And for the record, if I had to put money on it, I would bet Noel, WCS, Poythress, and Goodwin all go. Harrow returns because he’s not high enough on the draft board and he can’t transfer again. Wiltjer stays as well.

  44. Biglaw Dawgin'
    2:12 pm March 20, 2013 Permalink

33 – 1 is the worst-case scenerio, and their both in-state guys so their tuition wouldn’t be bad at all.

But I don’t think we’re going to even need to do that. I’m betting that either Goodwin or Poythress (or both) will make the leap. Plus, I could see someone transferring. I don’t know who, I could just see it happening. My gut says Harrow, but he’s already done it once, so he’s probably not going to do it again. Plus, I actually think Harrow would make a great backup PG when there’s less pressure on him.

  45. Musehobo
    2:13 pm March 20, 2013 Permalink

    47) That’s silly, literally just thinking out loud. I, of course, think Cal’s got this. Just tryin to figure up some initial numbers. What was so crazy about my math here?

  47. Musehobo
    2:18 pm March 20, 2013 Permalink

Just checked my own math, and it WAS bad. forgot to take out Noel. Means we would only need Polson or Hood to go off scholly, or 1 guy to leave for NBA.

  48. No need
    2:21 pm March 20, 2013 Permalink

Guys, hood will be graduated before next year starts. As will polson. They can both be walk ones and take ball room dancing as in state kids and only be out like 500 bucks. They will both be walk ons

  49. Matt
    2:22 pm March 20, 2013 Permalink

    45. If you assume Noel leaves like you said we have Wiltjer, Harrow, Hood, Polson, WCS, Archie, and Alex that could come back. That is only 7 but since Polson was originally a walk-on just like Malone, Long, and Lanter they will all four be walk-ons next year. They only have scholarships because Cal had extra to give out the past couple of seasons. So that leaves us with 6. We have 7 recruits coming in for 13 and that is worst case scenario.

Since Cal and his staff are still recruiting Wiggins that means we can bet that they know more will be leaving or Hood or Harrow would have to walk on next year. Honestly if it had to be one of them I think Harrow has done less to deserve his. Ultimately it won’t come down to that so everyone needs to quit freaking out about scholarships. The staff knows what they are doing and have alot more information than we do. Everything will work itself out.

  50. Rae
    2:23 pm March 20, 2013 Permalink

    28. I do think Harrow might decide it is in his best interest to go somewhere else. That slot will go to Hawkins, Noel or Wiggins. Noel will probably take his money and run, and Wiggins seems cool on us. It could be in our best interest to keep Hawkins from becoming the next South Carolina Cat killer.

Trusting Coach Cal to get these guys where they need to be. I’m sure he’s learned a lot from this season.
Probably won’t be an issue, but I’m quite sure if Nerlens were to want to come back, a space would be found.

  53. Brent
    2:26 pm March 20, 2013 Permalink

Why is everyone talking about Polson walking on. He could fill in a solid back up PG spot behind Andrew, he deserves a scholly and give Willis the walk on position. He coudnt even win region player of the year in the state of Kentucky.

  54. bigbluebear
    2:26 pm March 20, 2013 Permalink

    23) You are insane to insinuate out of all the players youve listed that there would not be a scholarship available if Nerlens decided to return. Cal would ask anyone besides the incoming freshmen to give up their scholarship before there wasnt one available for Nerlens. What are you thinking?

    2:39 pm March 20, 2013 Permalink

#23 genius hit it on the head. I believe we have ten schollies out this year. Mays/Beckham/NN are definites to leave. No way Nerlens can project Top 5 (and the guaranteed money 4+mill over 2 years that come with it), and NOT go. Barring something crazy with his rehab, he’ll be gone. I think everyone has agreed to that. So that is 7 on the books. Add the 6 that were committed before Randle, and your at 13. I believe Willie and his family will look at the details and test the water. They’ll see that he is projected Top 10, and 95% says he leaves (and I believe he should). There is too much risk..not necessarily injury, but simply losing draft value if he doesn’t add plenty to his game. Financially, it makes no sense to stay when you lay out risk versus reward. I like him on and off the court, but I would tell my son to leave in a heartbeat, given the same circumstances. So Willie frees up the scholarship for Randle. Wiggins goes to Florida St cause he doesn’t want attention and the ridiculous behavior from 20% of our fans when we lose (or fill in blank or whatever minor thing happens). Gordon goes out west. If Willie stays, then Polson gets pulled into the office and gets it revoked for a year. I’m sure he’ll understand if it comes to that. He would have been just as thrilled to play on this year’s team without a scholarship. HIs parents saved 15 grand…god bless them. Hopefully the staff explained it as such when they gave it to him.

  58. Genius
    2:49 pm March 20, 2013 Permalink

    54) If you read my post in context, which you either neglected to do or simply could not understand, you would have noticed my note, “as of MArch 20, 2013.” My post was to give an update of the situation as of today. That being said, AS OF TODAY that is our roster for next year.
I don’t think Cal will flat out take a scholarship from anyone. He will give them an option to sit on the bench at UK or play elsewhere. This is the decision Stacey Poole had to make. He could have stayed at UK all four years if he had desired, but chose to seek out playing time elsewhere. That being said, the smart money is on Nerlens going pro. I don’t even think an issue of finding a spot for anyone will arise.
I believe that the roster I listed will be close to accurate. I think it’s very possible Archie or Alex will decide to go pro, however. If either does so, there will be room for Wiggins if he decides to join UK or Nerlens if he comes back. Hopefully we don’t get in a situation where we have to ask someone to leave, and I don’t think Cal would put us in that position.

I like Willie, seems like a great kid. If he’s smart, and truly dedicated – 212 days means at least 21,200 free throws he should shoot. This kid could turn himself into a lottery pick – develop one or two go-to post moves, and become a 70 percent FT shooter and he’s a lock for the lottery and a multi-millionaire.

Again, Wiltjer is not transferring. Hsi sister is coming to UK next year to play volleyball and family is considering moving to Lexington. Doesn’t sound like a scenario to transfer. I could see Wiltjer red-shirting next year. He could still practice and what he really needs is to mature physically. He could be an excellent 4 yr player and then have an ok career for a few years in the pros if he could mature physically.

sammydog, mays was a grad student this year and he had a scholarship. Polson and Hood can have schollies next year if Cal wants them back.

  68. There are other scholarships available
    3:53 pm March 20, 2013 Permalink

Just because players aren’t on basketball scholarships doesn’t mean they can’t apply for other free rides. Any UK player from the basketball team could find multiple options to pay their way for the year. Trust me, at least half (if not all) of our walk-ons are not paying tuition. Maybe they’re paying for food, books, living accommodations but even that is unlikely. There may not be basketball schollys available but there are other ways to pay for school and still be on the team!

Besides, why would ANY of these kids leave (aside from those who decide to go pro) with the possibility of winning a national championship. Polson, Hood, and Harrow won’t be going anywhere.
As for whoever is questioning why Polson wouldn’t have a scholly next year: he started out as a walk-on and Cal offered him a scholarship as long as it was available & un-needed. . He was well aware that it could be taken away. Cal’s gesture of giving him an open scholarship means Polson will stick around solely based on loyalty alone.

  74. Dee W
    11:28 pm March 20, 2013 Permalink

I hope both Polson and Hood come back next year – they both were valuable and played with the most heart when they were on the floor…not for the minutes they may or may not play but for their senior leadership…plus, in foul trouble or just to give the other players a short break so they can rest, getting them in there for even just a few minutes could prove invaluable and they are talented enough to hold the line to give the other players needed time on the bench to rest / avoid fouls. If the other players last night had played with their determination and heart (and not act intimidated…for whatever reason, the big guys acted like they were intimidated by that little) team, it would not have even been close (Goodwin also deserves credit – unlike the others, he got it together and also made some good contributions)…a number of us were saying that yesterday about Hood and Polson and in this article Coach Calipari is saying the same thing that we observed:
