Will Stoops retain any of the current staff?

The current coaching staff on

With Mark Stoops safely ensconced as the new leader of the Big Blue football faithful, the search now shifts to his staff. Stoops has offered the offensive coordinator position to James Coley, his former colleague and current OC at Florida State, with a decision expected over the next day or so. Mitch Barnhart has made it clear that Stoops will have an open checkbook with which to assemble his staff, a promising sign in an increasingly positive hire.

But, will Stoops decide to retain any of Joker’s staff? You could argue that keeping at least one assistant on staff would provide continuity for the players and help the new staff learn the ropes. Let’s look at who’s left:

Mike Summers, Offensive Line/Running Game Coordinator — Summers is the assistant most likely to be retained. Universally loved by his players, Summers is a Lexington native and has history with the program, going back to 1980, when he was a graduate assistant. He joined the staff in 2010 after stints with Louisville, the Atlanta Falcons, and Arkansas. In his first season at Kentucky, the offensive line flourished, only to be plagued by injury in 2011. He was recently nominated for the Broyles Award, which is given to the top assistant coach in the country. Also, he is Kentucky’s lead recruiter in the Tallahassee/Florida panhandle area.

Andre Woodson, Graduate Assistant on Offense — One of Kentucky’s favorite sons, Woodson has been on staff for the past two seasons, helping with the quarterbacks. He has a great relationship with the current trio of quarterbacks, and could continue to be a young face of the program to recruits. He also has what seems to be an unhealthy obsession with SmartPop! popcorn.

Jeremy Jarmon, Asst. Director of Football Operations — Before the season began, Jarmon attempted to rally the fans around the football program, and was rewarded with a position on the staff. Jarmon is an excellent ambassador for the program, and a proven motivator (can we run that clip of him from the UK production of “A Few Good Men” again?). Jarmon could continue his role as part of football operations and be a strong alumni presence in the program. Please??

Rick Minter, Defensive Coordinator — Bahahahaha…no. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out, bub.

Do you think Stoops will completely clean house? If not, who does he keep?

Mike Summers is the only one he should even think about keeping.

Jarmon and Woodson are of no consequence but anyone who had a major role with this team needs to be gone.

Stoops should and will clean house. This program has sucked for 3 years under Joker. As bad as recruiting has been and as bad as we’ve been playing, not a single person on staff should be retained imo.

Actually, it will be interesting to see how Stoops handles the D more than who the DC is. I can’t imagine he doesn’t want to be pretty hands-on with that side of the ball, so it’ll probably have to be someone who doesn’t have to have total control.

Keep Summers for sure. Andre and Jeremy are questionable, I like them both as people. I like the point that those two could be young faces that could maybe recruit. I would say get rid of everyone else though. In the end it is Coach Stoops decision. Summers should have a spot though.

KSR post request (if only BTI were still around) – comprehensive listing of the players that Stoops will inherit, and how good they are, i.e. their star rating out of high school or how they have measured up so far for the cats. Who are the key contributors and how good are they, who are SEC level prospects, etc.

Some people say Joker brought some good players in and there is some young talent, other people say the cupboard is bare. I know Jokers recruiting classes usually ranked 40-50 but they have lost some key players to transfers as well. Would be nice to see some kind of analysis to provide measuring stick for what to expect going into next season.

I understand that the hiring of a new head coach is causing a lot of excitement for the football program. However, being that UK is playing a fairly important game against a tough ND team on the road tomorrow, and they are hoping to have the services of their starting point guard, wouldn’t it be appropriate to stop the Football Coach Celebration for a little bit and talk about Kentucky Basketball? We ARE the defending national champions in that sport, after all!

11 — The progression of Morgan Newton is not why this season was a failure. Injuries this year is why this team struggled, along with lack of overall talent. If Morgan Newton progressed nicely to a pretty good QB, we would still be playing a boat load of freshmen that would give up a ton of points.

16 – Wrong. Tim Couch by all accounts is a great guy, but Stoops will surround himself with winners. People that expect to win. What will make Stoops a “big hit” is if he finds a way to compete in the SEC, not how many ex-players that represent the UK Football legacy of losing that he keeps around.

21, yes, the football program overall has been a “loser” for the most part (aside from 2007), but to label all former UK football players as “losers” is selling them short. UK has had a lot of kids who were winners on the field (and off) through the years, even though the team may not have succeeded. Couch, Woodson, Cobb, and many others are far from representing a “legacy of losing”. I agree that Stoops probably needs to bring in the people he thinks can get the job done, but hopefully he will take a page out of Cal’s book and build a bridge to some of the past great players in the program so they can feel included going forward. If you don’t think all the tweets out there by former UK players in the NBA supporting the Cats don’t help recruiting, you are fooling yourself.

UK football fans are a long suffering bunch, and deserve to have some hope for better times ahead. That being said, all I want is a post or two mixed in about our basketball team and the game coming up tomorrow. And Loyal Blue, 2011 should have taught you to never sell a Cal-coached UK team short! 45 – Rupps…get over yourself… You know Harrow at PG is a liability at best. And expecting Polson to play above his head for 40 games is unrealistic. Hood and Polson as integral parts of the rotation are not attractive. It sounds like you may know a thing or two about basketball, if that is true, you know I am right and it could prove to be a long season without an effective PG. If you think we are deeper this year, you are not paying attention. Sure we have more bodies, but not bodies with anywhere near the overall talent level. I hope Harrow is a stud, but have not seen any signs that this could be true.

    1 – Davis
    2 – MKG
    3 – Teague
    4 – TJ
    5 – Lamb
    6 – Miller
    7 – Wiltjer
    8 – Polson

So which team is deeper…Last years by far. Learn the game and stop trying to be a hard A$$. I was simply asking basketball only fans to slow their roll and be happy about football.

If Stoops decides that retaining Summers is a good fit, then I am for it. Remember Stoops has already been given the go to open up the checkbook to bring in assistants, I do not think that he will retain someone he does not think he can work with or will hurt the programs progression. Grad assistants do not usually have a big role in the teams game plan anyways, again ill trust that one up to Stoops as well. If he is comfortable with Summers and can keep him at cost to spend the extra dollar to bring in a big name Offensive Coordinator then I am all for it. “In Stoops I Trust”

    52) What’s your definition of a long season? My definition of a long season is a last year BCG season. If by long season do you mean we’ll be ranked somewhere between 10-20 and maybe a Sweet 16 – Elite 8 team, with a decent shot of a Final 4. than perhaps you might be right. Don’t forget just how rotten college basketball is right now. But I think even if Harrow doesn’t round into shape; I believe you’re underestimating what Archie could become running the point. The kid gets to the basket at will and is a good free throw shooter. And of course last year’s team has a lot more talent; arguably one of the talented team in the history of college basketball. But you can take Polson off of your 8 man rotation from last year. Eloy played much more significant minutes than him, and those were about what, 3-5 minutes a game? I honestly believe Polson will play about 10 minutes a game. Is it ideal, no. However right now the kid is sporting a pretty decent assist to turnover ratio playing major minutes. But this is all subjective talk 5 games in to a 40 game season. However…

What really ticked me off is your comment on chemistry. What on earth have you seen to doubt the chemistry on this team, or, as you said… “but no chemistry and probably no chemistry potential” Honest question, what leads you to believe that?

I am one of the old UK football fans on here, being 67 years old. Have followed UK football since 1959. I can’t really remember when there is a coaching change at any school that the new coach has not kept at least one coach from the old staff. I am sure there have been times, however, for the majority of the time they do keep someone just because the player’s are familiar with an old coach and feel comfortable with them being around til they get used to the new staff, and in many cases they want someone around that recruited them. Just because we have had some bad year’s under Joker does not mean that every single coach on this staff is a terrible coach. Mike Summers is a top o-line coach, Chuck Smith, has done a great job through the year’s with guys like Woodyard, Braxton Kelley, Trevathan, Winston Guy, Avery Williamson, Bud Dupree and others. No one has mentioned Pat Washington. He did a great job at Tenn. for many year’s and sent a bunch of guys to the NFL. Our receivers this year were way better than when Tee Martin was the coach. They were all catching the passes and making plays til Maxwell Smith went down. It was an exciting offense til that happened. They were dropping passes like crazy with Martin as their coach. I’m not saying keep all of them, however, it would not hurt to keep one at least and I bet he does before all is said and done.

Andre wasn’t in charge of qb development Randy Sanders was… Andre basically helped with drills Sanders assigned and assisted in film review and in general provided an ear for the young QBs to talk to. Jarmon was in mostly an administration position.

GAs are basically bodies like walkons in the sense that they’re there to help and learn. They don’t make much. Its a starting point for people hoping to coach one day. People act like Andre and Jarmon were out there calling plays or dictating policy…

Pretty sure Andre will stick around since he’s just a GA

Oh and Summers should be retained but I will also support whatever Stoops does… he’s the one in charge. Summers is a good coach tho.

I will be so glad to see Sanders and Minter go. Offense and Defense are absolutely horrible!!

I don’t care who he retains, as long as he doesn’t retain the “Special Forces” monicker for the special teams unit. That was so absurd and childish.

Woodson did something no one else in the SEC has ever done. He threw 40 for 40 TD’s in a season. He knows what it’s like to be a winner. Keep him around. Jarmon too. They’re young guys at the very start of their careers, they are relatable for the players and they could learn a lot at the feet of a new master.

I think Couch thinks he has a big future on TV, and he might be right. He’s definitely improved a LOT since he started. He’ll stick with that gig as his day job.

I see no reason to not keep Andre and Jeremy, those were class acts and football players and teammates. I think they could help with the transition and as someone pointed out, they are there entry level people pursuing a career in coaching. Keep them and reward them for the years they gave to the UK football program. It would be nice to see them leave Kentucky on their own terms when they are ready to pursue their careers at another level.

I think you have to keep Chuck Smith. He is a proven winner The man has put several LB’s in the League. The high school coaches in the state all know and respect him which will help in recruting.

Keep only the young guys in Jarmon and Woodson. They aren’t stuck in their ways yet, are able to learn new things, and are willing to do anything to move up the coaching ladder. Let the old guys go. They’ve had their chance.

Dawson wanted movie stars and beaches, not loyalty to his state. Now is he is hitched his wagon to that Booby Petrino Jr. idiot Kiffin who will be in trouble shortly. Keep Chuck Smith. It was Minter that screwed up the defense.

How can so many people want Summers to stay? Just like what #8 said our OL has been a MAJOR problem ever since Summers took over. Anybody noticed every QB we played got hurt. That is directly pointed at the OL. Chuck Smith is a good Coach but stoops being a DC I’m sure he has his own guys to put in all the defensive coaching jobs. I do think Rock Oliver is one of the best strength coaches in the country but doesn’t he coach the Basketball team.
I seen where some people where saying to keep Summers because of his recruiting. Really??
Everybody involved in the recruiting the last 3 years should not only be fired but should pay half of their salary back! I don’t know what team everybody else has been watching, but our talent IS NOT SEC caliber. We have been competing against MAC schools.#14 the measuring stick for our talent is their, it’s on field proformance and that sucked.

Some on here need to calm down with the best hire ever talk. That’s crazy. Sure the tv people say its a good hire Thet say that about every hire. Stoops very well could be a great hire and I for one hope so. However dude has no experience and to this point has been given a lot of credit because of his brother success at OU. The mans coming in to a bad team in a tough conference so I think we need about 3 years before we can really judge just what type of hire this was. I
If Stoops wins it will secure Barnhart legacy at UK. If he loses some will always bring up that we had a chance to get a certain coach with a record of winning big. I’m not saying thats right but just being realistic. So let’s all hope Stoops is closer to Bob and not Mike. I know Mitch will be praying so.

I think Stoops should clean house and bring in his own guys. Keeping any coaches from the previous team could cause tension with the players and the new coaches. Plus I think bringing in a whole new staff is needed and could be what this program needs to move forward.

Clean house. See you Smith, Sanders, Minter and all. You are holding back the freight train. Stunk at coaching, stunk more at recruiting. Take a hike. Start anew coach Stoops. Practice and play like warriors. The previous coaches had their chance. Boring football, not good for players. Take a hike. Go Big Blue

I’d vote to keep Chuck Smith. He’s our linebacker coach. If there is one position that has been a bright spot in an otherwise grim defense it’s been our linebackers. He’s a former UK wildcat player. He did an awesome job turning around the football program at Boyle Co. High School. He would be a asset in recruiting especially Kentucky.

People,People I can’t believe the worst play caller I’ve seen “other than whoever called plays for Bill Curry” was not mentioned but a couple of times as a coach who should leave the state and never return.I won’t mention his name(SANDERS). He has some talent with QB’s I’ll admit that, but as a play caller I thought he was still coaching at Tenn. because thats who benefited from his calls this past saturday.
