With Mark Stoops safely ensconced as the new leader of the Big Blue football faithful, the search now shifts to his staff. Stoops has offered the offensive coordinator position to James Coley, his former colleague and current OC at Florida State, with a decision expected over the next day or so. Mitch Barnhart has made it clear that Stoops will have an open checkbook with which to assemble his staff, a promising sign in an increasingly positive hire.
But, will Stoops decide to retain any of Joker’s staff? You could argue that keeping at least one assistant on staff would provide continuity for the players and help the new staff learn the ropes. Let’s look at who’s left:
Mike Summers, Offensive Line/Running Game Coordinator — Summers is the assistant most likely to be retained. Universally loved by his players, Summers is a Lexington native and has history with the program, going back to 1980, when he was a graduate assistant. He joined the staff in 2010 after stints with Louisville, the Atlanta Falcons, and Arkansas. In his first season at Kentucky, the offensive line flourished, only to be plagued by injury in 2011. He was recently nominated for the Broyles Award, which is given to the top assistant coach in the country. Also, he is Kentucky’s lead recruiter in the Tallahassee/Florida panhandle area.
Andre Woodson, Graduate Assistant on Offense — One of Kentucky’s favorite sons, Woodson has been on staff for the past two seasons, helping with the quarterbacks. He has a great relationship with the current trio of quarterbacks, and could continue to be a young face of the program to recruits. He also has what seems to be an unhealthy obsession with SmartPop! popcorn.
Jeremy Jarmon, Asst. Director of Football Operations — Before the season began, Jarmon attempted to rally the fans around the football program, and was rewarded with a position on the staff. Jarmon is an excellent ambassador for the program, and a proven motivator (can we run that clip of him from the UK production of “A Few Good Men” again?). Jarmon could continue his role as part of football operations and be a strong alumni presence in the program. Please??
Rick Minter, Defensive Coordinator — Bahahahaha…no. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out, bub.
Do you think Stoops will completely clean house? If not, who does he keep?
