Why We Shouldn’t Be Worried

So signing day has come and gone, and there were no big surprises to write home about.  While we did gain a very athletic and talented player in Poole, the reality remains that Brandon Knight did not rip off his shirt and reveal a UK jersey, nor did Lamb, Leslie, or Selby. Is it time to hit the panic button?  As the venerable Lee Corso would say, ‘Not so fast, my friend.’

Gary Parish has an article about this new trend of waiting today at CBS and he uses our own Eric Bledsoe as an example.  He says,

Consider the case of Eric Bledsoe. This time last year, he was being recruited primarily by Ole Miss, UAB, South Florida and Alabama. By April, he was hearing from Duke, Florida, Memphis and Kentucky, and he ultimately chose John Calipari’s Wildcats over Josh Pastner’s Tigers.

Now Bledsoe is a freshman at UK.

He’ll likely start beside John Wall and win an SEC title.

So did he cost himself by waiting late?

Not. One. Bit.

“But Will and/or Gary,” you say, “if any of them wanted to play for UK, they would have already signed!  We’re Kentucky, after all!  This indecision is driving me crazy!”  Perhaps, person-with-too-much-invested-in-the-college-choice-of-high-schoolers, perhaps.  But think about it like this.  The school you are particularly interested in has just gone through a coaching change.  There is a new system to be implemented.  There are phenomenal players there currently, but for the most part, untested.  Why jump into making that decision right now?  Wouldn’t it make more sense to wait and see how things develop?

For better or worse, the recruiting game has changed.  For this season, it’s actually beneficial for the recruits to drag it out, because the more they see of UK, the more they will like it.  When we make our run to the final four in March, there won’t be a recruit left that won’t secretly be wearing UK gym shorts under their game shorts. Stop worrying about who will be here next year, and enjoy who is here this year.  After all, recruiting is Calipari’s job, and I promise you that no matter what happens, Konner Tucker is not walking through that door.
