It has been one week since Drew Barker announced his commitment to the University of Kentucky, vowing to continue Mark Stoops’ great recruiting run by reaching out to his peers. In that short period of time he has created a UK Class of 2014 Twitter account to complement daily communication with his peers. In the next few weeks, I’ll be breaking down some of the best players Drew wants to join him in the Class of 2014.

I know Drew certainly wouldn’t mind throwing to the giant 6’5 target. Kief’s size doesn’t slow him down, running a 4.5 40-yard dash with a 35 inch vertical leap (try covering THAT in man-to-man coverage). He holds school records for receptions in a season and in a game, with his best performance against Cincy powerhouse Moeller resulting in 12 catches for 161 yards and 1 touchdown. With a great reputation off the field as well, it’s hard to find anything wrong with him other than a thin physique (That will change quickly once he starts a college-level weight program). With a Barker-to-Kief connection, Kentucky will become a force in the Red Zone with a jump-ball specialist on the outside.

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE! I can talk about how he is physically one of the best WR recruits ever for Kentucky, he has to have more swag than Bookie, Boogie, and Stevie Styles combined. Not only does he have his own website highlighting his career (, but he has his own rap song in the background of his highlight tape. The best lyrics from Speed Does Kill, “#10 Derek Kief, y’all in disbelief. Throw the jump ball, y’all check the vertical leap.” God Almighty PLEASE get this kid to UK.

6’5 and runs a 4.5, now this is the type of athlete you need to compete. I just don’t see UK beating out Bama and OSU both if they are serious about this kid. He would be perfect for the air raid. Big enough to go over the middle but fast enough to hit the seam!
    5) You need to calm it down a notch! I’ll admitt I wanted Patrino, but Stoops has made me a believer. He has hit the ground running and is looking more and more like a great hire. That said we are NOT Bama or OSU. UK is not in position to take recruits from those coaches. If we beat them out it’s because they didn’t “want” a player that bad. It’s the same as UK in basketball, Bama will not beat us for a recruit if Cal really wants them. They might beat Cal for a player that Cal is recruiting more as a project or role player. Saban and Myer are the best in the business’s for a reason!

UK: I want to ask you a question… straight out, flat out… and I want you to give me an honest answer. What do you think the chances of a guy like you and a girl like me… ending up together?
Kief: Well UK… that’s difficult to say… you really don’t…
UK: Hit me! Just give it to me straight! I came a long way just to see you Kief. The least you can do is level with me. What are my chances?
    Kief: Not good.
UK: [Gulps] You mean, not good like one out of a hundred?
Kief: I’d say more like… one out of a million.
UK: So you’re telling me there’s a chance. Yeah!

Stoops isn’t just a recruiter, Stoops can coach.

If he wants to play in the SEC, with a big strong QB who can get him the ball, for an accomplished offensive coordinator who is gonna throw the ball 60 times a game, on a team where he can start as a freshman, and play with a LOT of players from his home state who, like him, want to prove that high school football is as good in Ohio as it is anywhere in the South….Where else COULD he go?

@7 – cute, but overused. Lloyd should have ended up with Mary. Maybe Stoops can re-write the script.

8: Hey Timer, you say Stoops can coach. What is Stoops’ record as a head coach?

    Speed does kill!!

1 – It doesn’t matter who has offered. This is a new program with a new coaching staff. If Cal left UK next year and went to Rutgers(which he won’t),guess who would become relevant(Rutgers). Similarly, Stoops is selling his history of winning a Title at Miami as a DB Coach and his history at FSU as one of the top DC’s in the country. Likewise Neil Brown is selling a high octane offense that throws 50 times a game and lights up score boards.

With Kief, he could play in the SEC, in a high octane pass-first offense, with a stud QB,and a program thats ready to win at the highest level. The best part is it is only 1.5 hours away from home. Going to UK is not a hard sell at this point. Its harder to pass up what we are offering.

UK has more going or them than you think. If he goes OSU or Bama he is an automatic redshirt and will be part of an offense that is run heavy. At UK he plays immediately. Plus he is very good friends with snodgrass, Barker and Edwards. He also has said that he wants to play in a pass heavy offense and really likes the new high performance thing at UK. He has also said he regretted going to OSU spring game and is really excited at the thought of building something at UK.

How would Willie Cauley-Stein do in the Air Raid offense? Who was our last two-sport star?

Kief is not afraid to catch the ball in traffic. Kief is must get receiver, not sure about his speed, but seems to good hands.
