Who is UK’s most indispensable player?

UK Football Media Day

Other than the quarterback, if there’s one player that UK can’t afford to lose this season, who would it be? ESPN’s Greg Ostendorf says defensive end Bud Dupree, the UK player with the most preseason honors:

Alvin “Bud” Dupree, DE, Jr.

It will be interesting to see how Dupree transitions from linebacker to end this fall, but regardless of position, he’s the best player on this UK defense. And there’s no doubt it will be a defense that new head coach Mark Stoops will count on to keep them in games. As a sophomore, Dupree emerged as one of the SEC’s top pass-rushers, finishing with 91 tackles and seven sacks. This fall, he’ll also serve as a mentor to newcomers Za’Darius Smith, a junior college transfer, and Jason Hatcher.

Dupree is the obvious answer, but Avery Williamson has to be up there too. So far, Stoops and Eliot say Williamson is “light years” beyond the other linebackers, and he’s established himself as a team leader. This group needs strong senior leadership, and Avery is more fired up than anyone to get out and shed UK’s “SEC cellar dweller” image.

gotta go with williamson, there’s a lot more depth on the d line … your mlb is your ideal defensive qb and i believe he’ll be making sure guys are where they’re supposed to be

Why dont they move bud back to linebacker and have hatcher at the other DE with Za’darius?

Agreed with #2. Avery for me, and it’s not even close. It’s no secret LB appears to be our weakest link, especially in terms of depth, but I do think Khalid Henderson will take a giant step forward this season. If Avery and Khalid stay healthy, we’ll be formidable. I also believe Kory Brown will be solid at strong side with Simpson backing him up. Don’t forget Brown and Simpson are both converted linebackers – Simpson from RB and Brown from DB/WR. Both were a bit green last season but expect them to make significant strides on the learning curve under Stoops and Eliot. Looking forward to Marcus McWilson playing closer to the line of scrimmage and basically lining up as a LB in the nickel. If injuries begin to mount at LB we could even see preferred walk-on Robby Irgang see some action, who Eliot said has been picking things up quicker than any walk-on he’s ever coached on the defensive side of the ball. Hopefully it won’t come to that.

I don’t think we’re as bad off as people think we are at corner, where we’re running a five-man rotation of Cody Quinn, Fred Tiller, Jaleel Hytchye, Nate Willis and Blake McClain. McClain, who moved to corner from safety early on in camp, has been taking reps with the 1s after Quinn went down with the ankle injury and is one to keep an eye on. But the key will obviously be whether Quinn can nurse that ankle back to health in time for WKU, who was arguably our best corner in camp until he went down.

#5 I believe Bud will see his fair share of time back at LB in order to get Hatcher on the field at DE. Hatcher is too talented to keep off the field and fully believe he is ready to make an impact now. It’d be nice to be able to have Za’Darius, Bud, Hatch and Avery all on the field at once, wouldn’t it? Can’t wait!

We have more defensive lineman than linebackers…please tell me Dupree is going to be a LB it just doesn’t make sense to move him to a position that has more depth when you’re so weak at LB.
