Which Is A Bigger Concern, Offense or Defense?

When we received the official news that Nerlens Noel was out for the rest of the season, we expected to miss his defensive presence much more than his offensive presence, reasoning that his ten-ish points per game could easily be made up with Archie’s hundred+ shot attempts per game, an extra three or two from Wiltjer and Mays, maybe an autolob from Willie every now and again. His defensive presence, shot alterations, and blocks on blocks on blocks would be what we missed the most- not to mention his ever-present hustle.

Today’s game proved that unfortunately, both sides of the court will be incredibly difficult for the Cats to succeed on without Noel. The Cats were held to only 58 points (26 in the first half), while allowing a Tennessee team that has struggled offensively all season (scoring 74 points over TWO CONSECUTIVE GAMES in November and December) to shoot 57% from the field and 100% from three-point range while scoring 88 points- their highest point total of the season. Meanwhile, the Cats shot 35% from the field and 40% from three-point range for less than sixty points. Obviously, we’d love to see the Cats put together a complete game, but which side needs to be addressed first?

Personally, I’m inclined to say I’d rather see us get into our offensive flow first. All season we’ve thought that this team would force turnovers and score points in transition, but we’ve yet to see that actually happen in a game. Willie is incredibly raw on offense, but he hustles on the other end  of the court to make up for it. Mays has been shooting well from three-point range lately, as has Kyle, but anytime Archie lowers his head and drives, those jumpers are negated. Ryan Harrow has completely disappeared from the offensive side of the court- not something you want to see from your formerly starting point guard, and they can only go to Jarrod so many times. If the Cats are running as many sprints as Cal says they are, the effects of Camp Cal should let us run with any team in the country to the point where we could simply outscore teams without worrying about the liabilities the WBA give us on defense. Today Cauley-Stein, Goodwin, Poythress, and Harrow combined for 13 points on 5-19 shooting (h/t Kyle Tucker) and ten turnovers. We’re not going to win games with those statistics. Plus, hitting our offensive Dougie would result in the team actually having fun on the court, something I’ve been sorely missing most of this season.

That said, our glaringly obvious need to play with fight and heart would be more easily translated on defense, and that’s worth more than any wins or losses the rest of the season. Which do you all think needs to be the first thing addressed in practice on Monday?

Offense has been an issue for a month if not more. Nerlens had us covered defensively so now both ends of the floor are a problem. I don’t think we have the talent to make the offense work this year. Poythress looks clueless on the offensive end, Archie can’t shoot and runs over someone going to the basket 5-10 times a game, Cal has WIljer afraid to shoot open shots because he benches him for a missed GOOD shot (while keeping Archie in for a terrible shot), AND he can’t create his own shot, and Harrow, perhaps our most over all talented offensive player has utterly disappeared. I’ve never seen anything like it.

Defense is all about effort, and this team has TWO, and ONLY two players who give their all out there, and they don’t have enough physical gifts to make up the difference, and they are Polson and Mays

Let’s see. Billy-Clyde missed the Tourney his second year and was shown the door. This year UK may not even make the NIT. Good thing Calipari won it all last year! LOL. Otherwise people may be questioning his coaching ability.

Last year UK had 2 sophs and a senior who had been in the top 6 the previous year, plus the top 2 picks in the draft with freshman Davis and Gilcrest. This year 4 frosh and a soph with no playing experience, and Wiltjer who played about 5 minutes a game last year. The only experienced player is Julius Mays, a transfer from Wright State. Also, Polson hadn’t seen the hardwood until this year (jr.)

The one-and-done who is ready to play in the NBA is rare. I don’t see any player at UK who is even close to being ready for the NBA. They don’t know how to play the game (yet) and are even struggling in college ball. Even Noel is raw with a very limited offensive game who is too skinny and will be pushed around the NBA with no problem. If Goodwin, Poythress & Cauley-Stein stick around for another year (at least) with next year’s crop coming in, the team could be very good.

But this year, forget about it!

Nerlens Noel does not a program make. Sure, he’s sorely missing. But, he’s gone. Time to regroup. The point is CAL let these CATS fall flat on their face for a reason. This is a teachable game full of lessons. These CATS must and will learn to play together. The talent is there; the extraction has just begun.

11- I’m not so sure about that. Would you put Goodwin in off the bench or Polson? I’ll take Polson at this point. Poythress? The guy goes at full speed maybe 1% of the time he’s in the game. How is that going to be different next year? What concerns me the most about these guys is this is the FIRST group of players under Cal who not only have not gotten better as the season has gone along, but gotten worse, NOTICEABLY worse. Do you think Goodwin can develop a shot in 6 months? How do you fix Poythress? Wiltjer is slow as a glacier. How do you fix that? WCS has hands of stone, I don’t have any idea how he was a receiver because the ball hits his hand and bounces around like a ping pong ball. I don’t know if those are issues that can be fixed.

NONE of these guys seem to have an understanding of the game, Constantly beat on the boards, on D, etc.

Address the plays and decision making. 3 or 4 guards in the game and they pass it down low to a guy who is triple teamed (WSC at times) or they pass it down to Wiltjer and he has to force up a contested shot. He is not great at playing down low yet and when he misses there is no effort for getting the rebounds when WSC is tripled during rebounds.
If this team is going to miss shots you need to attempt getting an offensive rebound. The more chances you have to put the ball up the better the chance of winning the games obviously.

When you have WSC learn how to play basketball in the post (because he doesnt know how to play it seems with all of the quick shots, travels, running to rim and getting charges while triple teamed in post)…and he shoots…who will rebound? AP is usually hiding, Wiltjer is afraid of contact and is too slow to jump, and none of the guards move off the 3pt line to go in for rebounds after their missed shots..

What Louisville does when Sive and Smith practically throw the ball off the backboard is get offensive rebounds. Notice their offensive sets…and look at UK’s. When UK has 4 guards and 1 center in…after a missed shot every guard stands and watches while WSC is double or triple teamed for the rebounds.

…so no offensive rebounds leads to other team’s fast breaks where UK doesnt play defense. Also another problem is 2nd chance points from the inability to get rebounds when on defense.

Calipari needs to swtich to a strategy that a team like Northern Iowa is using…they have all 5 guys pack the paint during every shot on offense and on defense they pack the paint with a zone.
UK will not win games by changing lineups every 3minutes. Other teams will go on runs and UK will always have to play catch up if there is no consistency on the court. 4 guards and 1 center will not work vs teams who have bigger teams.
WSC is not a center he is a complimentary player to a skilled center. He is able to get lobs or steals or opens looks because the other team is doubling Nerlens.

Calipari needs to quit being stubborn and trying to teach these kids and put a lineup out there so they know their roles. He needs to tell Archie to quit running into the paint with the ball. He had 4 fouls previous game and all were charges. Does this kid not watch his game film? It would be different if Archie dribbled in to draw in the defense and threw it out to an open Wiltjer or was able to bounce pass to a player like AP or WSC running from the wing and can get a dunk.

In my opinion, they need to get after it in practice. I am so sick of seeing this team play so soft. I don’t care if they have to fight each other in practice. I just want to see some fight in them. I am so sick seeing them get pushed around. They need to play like men and not grade school boys. I would love to see someone…anyone…grab somebody by the jersey and get in someone’s face. This team needs a leader, and I am not sure who that is. It may be Julius, but somebody needs to tick some people off so they will start playing. Enough of this soft mentality and trying to encourage each other. Get in somebody’s face and challenge them. Challenge them to do something! A good scuffle would do this team some good. They need a come to Jesus moment. They need something to get their attention. Whatever buttons that have been pushed aren’t working. Cal calling them out is not working. Someone needs to step up and they need to hold each other accountable! Let’s turn this thing around! There is still time!

And the NBA gurus that thinking of picking Archie and Poythress in the first round should get shot.

And finally, the next time Archie does that little underhand scoop shot, show him the door. Has he hit any of those? Ever?

One problem is the offense keys off the defense…no quick outs – no easy baskets…offense needs to run throw Wiltjer because he is a threat to shoot or pass which forces the other team to guard him and then opens others up or he takes it himself…He and Mays are the only two the opposition has to play straight-up on anything outside 8 ft.

I actually feel bad for Ryan. He seems like a good kid, but he just isn’t cut out for this, especially at this school. I would not be surprised at all if Cal tells him it’s probably best, in Ryan’s interest, to leave after this yr. You can name a lot of physical attributes that the kid has, and doesn’t have, but none of that matters at all if you don’t have the ability to LEAD a team. Something, at this school, in this system, your pg MUST do. I’m actually surprised that Cal didn’t see the weakness in this kid. I mean, how could you not? He doesn’t have to actually be on the court, running your offense, to see that he isn’t that type of person.

    13. The offense has looked the best running it through Wiltjer, including him setting picks on the guards at the top of the key and popping out, or setting screens for Mays, or posting near the foul line and setting picks/passing/shooting. He’s the best passer on the team. Then Calipari went away from that. Go figure. I can’t.

I guess he thinks the sun shines out of Goodwin’s ash. Or he’s trying to live up to the “one-and-done” hype for future recruits and Goodwin sucks and he is trying to develop him from the embarassment he is.

    18. True, most of the players don’t understand the game (other than Wiltjer and perhaps Mays) and are sucking.

But they are 18 year old freshmen with physical ability and who can (possibly) develop. I wouldn’t flush them yet. Poythress is physically gifted and has a good mid to outside shot. Most players take 2-3 years to develop, like Prince and Bogans. I think the frosh over the last couple years have been the exception. Except for Teague, Terrence Jones, Orton, Liggins, Lamb, etc. They all could have used 1 or 2 more years in college.

Theres only so much the players and coaches can do individually to prepare for the games. One thing the marines and army teach is discipline. These guys make mistakes and constantly repeat them. Calipari can yell at them all he wants but it is not getting through to them. Last year’s freshman had it easy because they were surrounded by skilled players and were able to have a smooth ride to the championship. This year’s team has yet to carry momentum onto the next game (even during a 5 game winning streak). Every game they come out flat or just purposely forget what we have seen in the past from Calpari coached teams. Most teams adjust to what defenses are showing them…this team is not and are simply throwing to the open guy and letting him do it all on his own then running to defensive end instead of making / running plays or battling inside for offensive rebounds.

Cal has run out of players to compliment his highly touted recruiting classes. They are all gone and unless he makes some adjustments I think last year’s title will be his one and only at UK. This year was a great example of what a truly freshman team would do. All of his three previous teams at UK had upperclassmen to compliment his talented freshman. Plus, I think it is time to admit that a couple of these incoming freshman this year weren’t quite as good as we thought.

it doesn’t matter which is addressed first. they have both been addressed all season long to no avail. we weren’t that good before we lost our best player. now the sky has fallen. things haven’t worked out for us this year and I don’t see that changing. today in Knoxville was proof of that. We won our 8th national championship last year. Those are hard to win. We’re gonna have years like we’re having now every once in a while.

I am so sick and tired of hearing people say ” we have all the talent, they are just not playing up to it”. Tell me who on this team has any talent? Thats just it! We are NOT talented. There is not a person on this team good enough to wear the uniform. Im not knocking them personally, I’m sure they’re all great kids. They’rejust not top level basketball players. Simple as that!!

Even Kyle Wiljter makes Texas’ big men look fast. So there’s that.

I said it yesterday and I will say it again. We give way too much credit to WCS. He is incapable of creating his own shot. Is to slow on defense and cannot box out. So crazy that draft experts have him going in the first round. I will not miss him maybe he is a good guy but he is no better than eloy Vargas.

the first thing that needs to be address, what it means to wear KENTUCKY across your chest! then take a depth breath and go about finding five-six players with the heart to play as a team, let the superego ride the pine for the reat of the year, see how there NBA stocks fall them,i’m sorry but i think coach loss this team a long time ago!

They have no pride. The defense has to be addressed first in my opinion, but if you have players not buying in to the system and want to play as individuals, well we see how far that is taking them. What needs to happen is the players need to listen to Coach and stop listening to outside influences aka friends, family, ect.

Not much can be done by the looks of things at this point in the season. Either they don’t get it, not capable, or just don’t care. At least STOOPS is bringing something and as long as I have been a cat fan I never recall a February I was thinking more about UK football over hoops. That aside, what is the situation on scholarships next season? The guys we signed but yet who other than Noel is ready to go pro?

I believe I am seeing Coach’s hair starting to turn gray…with this bunch he may not have any at the end of the season. Just like the old saying, you can take a horse to water but you cant make it drink,,,,so Cal has taken these guys to practice after practice, yet still there are a few who wont drink, instead seeking to find their own well…so do you get rid of them or just move them to the end of the bench…put em way down on the end of the bench, we cant win with the 2 or 3 players and everyone knows who they are, so play the other guys and let the ones with no heart or commitment watch the losses and their draft status go down the toilet. Heard a call in after the game I believe had the right idea, Cal sits them down after the season and tells them go home relax for the summer, decide if next year you want to play team ball my way and if you dont, find you someplace else to play cause with the crew coming in, you will have the best seat in the house, front row and able to watch every game. Sick of everyone making excuses for them including Coach, they dont want to suck it up and play like they were recruited, then let them sit and watch!
