Where Will Julius Land? Feel Free to Answer for Yourself.

Julius Randle announced yesterday that he’ll be committing on March 20th, which happens to be the first day of spring and my brother’s birthday.  So, triple-whammy.

There’s always a lot of speculation about where a recruit will go, even if they’re a heavy lean one way or the other.  Lots of folks have said Kansas, but you’d really be kidding yourself to count Calipari out of it, at any stage really.  But where do the common folk thing he’s going to land?

Check out the poll here, and the results are as follows:

For the record, while most analysts have picked Kansas, several are still holding out for Kentucky.

Randle is one of three elite prospects (along with Andrew Wiggins and Aaron Gordon) to announce in the next month or so.  I can’t expect that Cal is going to whiff on all three, but Randle is set to be the first domino to fall.  Hopefully this is like the later questions in “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” where the audience poll is useless.

If he picks Kansas I would have to think it’s because he knows Wiggins is picking the Cats

#3 Gotta think if Cal was able to sell Wiggins’ parents, that we got him. Randle not waiting to see what Poythress is doing. Tend to disagree with KSR on this one and think he ends up not at UK.

That’s my birthday too. I’d love to have him, but at what point do we start to feel a little greedy? And is there such a thing as TOO MUCH talent on one cbb team?

I will go along with Matt on this one. I believe it will be Randle to the cats and a longer shot to get Wiggins.

    Randle – Kansas
    Wiggins – Kansas / UNC
    Gordon – Arizona

Cal will strike out on all three, sad to say. Who will he pursue to fill the void? Cal is the best recruiter in college basketball, but he has also missed on many guys. With the exception of last season, he is always 1-2 guys short of having the mix he needs to get to championship level. Even with the Harrison twins, James Young, etc., the team will only be slightly above average next year, certainly not an elite college team. With Noel, Poythress and Cauley- Stein all leaving for the NBA draft, we will have another very young team of freshmen. We should lower our expectations significantly for next season, especially if Cal misses on Randle, Wiggins and Gordon.

This one worries me a little. Kansas fans (on their scout forum) are pretty confident that they have Randle. On the other hand, they’re not holding out much hope for Wiggins. Add on the fact that most all recruiting people are saying Randle to Kansas……….I don’t know. Makes for a long two weeks!
But I know we should never underestimate Cal!

Cal needs to get 1 of the 3 recruits and if he strikes out on all of them he better hope WCS or poythress return to go along with wiltjer and harrow. Because it will just be the same thing next year with no returning player besides wiltjer, granted we would have a huge upgrade at PG in Andrew over Ryan though.

One more thing……..about the USA Today reporter that had close ties with Julius. Is that supposedly still an on-going relationship, or did Julius just allow him access to the in-home visits?

    16. Even if that happens, PG play is crucial in the college regular season. It is what has ultimately killed us this year. Backcourt controls the regualr season and then frontcourt stands up during postseason play when things get physical.

Through the whole recruiting process with randel it seems like the favorite has always been the last place he visited. I remember we were the favorite after he visited the alumni game and then it was Florida, then Texas, then nc state, and now Kansas. I think he’s had his mind made up on kentucky the whole time and is just trying to get as much attention and free stuff before he picks. Still could see him picking any of them though.

#13: I am not a troll or attempting to troll. It is true that Cal’s teams have been 1-2 guys short from a talent perspective of reaching championship level for 2 of his 4 seasons as the Head Coach. His first team and the team last year were elite, the Brandon Knight team and the team this year is not. If Cal misses again on all three (Randle, Wiggins & Gordon), then who will he pursue to fill the void? With guys leaving for the NBA draft, he will need to acquire 2-3 more elite guys to avoid having another season like this year.

  23. 2014 title depends on at least 1 of these dudes
    10:14 am March 5, 2013 Permalink

It is so easy its sad all this crap is being worried about with these guys. It is so simple if they want a NCAA championship and go the very next year to the NBA and go higher than they would and get more money they come to Lexington! If not they are selfish kids that don’t want to work hard at UK and get better so they have very long NBA careers! They seem like good kids and if they choose somewhere else to play we all from the BBN should wish them luck however I think it is in their best interest to come play for coach CAL and deep down they know it !!!ยก!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, if you assume a standard bell curve distribution of intellect within any given population, the majority of people fall below “smart”, it is then totally reasonable to assume that the most popular answer might not be the best choice.

Dick Vitale once said that college coaches are crazy as they are pitting their futures in the decisions of 18 year old kids. With Cal’s policy of recruiting the best players there will always be one and done payers coming and going. So basically the program will be rolling the dice each year to put together another team that hopefully can compete for a title. Last Year’s team had the perfect mix of some experience (that were also really good college basketball players) and talented youth who were also really really good players. We have to get back to that type of cycle again. Experience and youth together. There will be down years as it will be almost impossible to restock every year with enough players that can adjust to the college game and play as a team. All this being said, nothing wrong with going after the best players. If we don’t get them someone will. Can’t compete without talent. Just remember where we were at 5 years ago. Cal has a plan. GO CATS!!!!!

Why would Randle or Wiggins care what whether Poythress or anybody else on this team stays or goes, use your head! Lee has nothing to do with not geting Randle, Poythress has nothing to do with Wiggins but Dakari Johnson has a lot to do with helping get Randle!

Its Kansassss- according to his coach. Why would he come to UK with the 6 recruits we have. We loose him as well as Wiggins. Also, NO chance for Gordon. I just hope Wiggins does not go to UNC. We do need some of our current Freshmen to stick around next yr if we are going to be competitive.

#25: The Brandon Knight team went on a great run to make the Final Four, but the team as a whole was not elite from a talent perspective. I personally believe Wiggins ends up at Kansas or UNC. Randle will definitely sign with Kansas. Gordon may surprise people and sign with UK, but odds are he goes with Arizona. Personally, I really like Gordon’s game a lot. He has such a high-level motor like MKG.

If we get Randle, it think it will increase our chances of getting Wiggens, too. I would think both of them would start at Kentucky next year, no matter who we would have coming back, and no matter that we already have 5 star recruits at every position. Randle is simply the best power forwrd in the class, and Wiggens is not only the best small forwrd, but the best player period. If they want to play on a national championship team next year, their best chance is to come to Kentucky.
