When Will UK Get its First 5-Star FB Recruit?

With the big news of the day being Mikel Horton’s commitment to UK, Kentucky recruiting is unquestionably at an all-time high.  J. Rowland has a few tweets highlighting just how great it’s been the last few months:

Of those teams in the comparison that UK matched up favorably with (Arkansas, Florida, A&M, LSU, Georgia), at least three of them have picked up two or more 5-star recruits in the last three years or so.  Now that Kentucky is, at the very least, keeping up with them on the recruiting trail, it’s fair to ask, when will Kentucky pick one up?

This shouldn’t sound like sour grapes, either.  It’s not a matter of complaining that Stoops hasn’t picked up a 5-star yet, but more so a matter of hope that he could And that it might only be a matter of time until he does.  The program is in a state of improvement, and it’s exciting to speculate on how high the ceiling is.  So far, we haven’t found it yet.

Was Micah Johnson Kentucky’s last 5 star commit in football? I remember he was the 10th ranked recruit on ESPN for his class and was definitely a 5 star.

Very interesting. Thanks for the update. If he puts together a top 15 recruiting class that would be more impressive than Cal’s recent recruiting, in my opinion.

2 I do understand where your coming from but cal just put together a class that is considered the best in history, and still isnt not done.

I don’t think Micah was a 5* on rivals and Micah was 6th in ESPN’s ratings but I believe that was before ESPN gave out stars. He would be a 5* for them today but wasn’t then.

I really can’t remember the last time UK got a 5.9 4* in rivals ratings though. Dequinn Evans, Glenn Faulkner, Ryan Mossakowski, Jason Hatcher, McWilson, Snodgrass, Horton, were all 5.8 i think. Just something to think about.

1: M. Johnson was a 4 star in the final Rivals ranking. He was no. 36 overall. You can still look it up on Rivals.

    What happened to Micah?
Why was he such a bust?
Did he get injured or what?

    4. That’s what I was wondering but it shows on their website he was 9th overall and the number 1 inside linebacker. And it shows 5 stars by his name so unless somebody else was ranked 5 stars on another scouting service after that he was UK’s last 5 star recruit, which was in 2006. So it’s been 7 years.

Horton told the Rivals guy in the video where he commits that there were a bunch of other guys at that showcase he was at in Cincinnati who had actually committed to UK already “over the phone” but weren’t announcing yet. Wonder who they are????

Because he was overrated in highschool, played on a great fort Campbell team and never had to play a full game until his last one. I was at the game and he was so winded he had to come out late in the 4th when he was really needed. Conditioning seemed to be his problem at UK too IMO

Trolls are in full force – #11 – what happens after this year when Teddy and Charlie both leave? Charlie’s gone when you possibly go undefeated and cant play in game because of terrible strength of schedule. My bet is you get another Kragthorpe.

UK’s best bet at a 5-star would have to be Damien Harris (2015 RB) out of Madison Central. The kid is lightning quick, and UK will go head to head with Michigan, OSU, and Notre Dame for him. Also, George Brown, 2015 OT from Ohio will be considered for 5 stars, although I think he’ll fall just a little short

What would KSR do without CatsIllustrated? I would love to see the writers on this site function for more than a week without CI existing

It took 40 years to get 4 Star players! Joker could hardly get a 4 Star to talk to him, he had to settle for 2 & 3 Stars but the 5 Star will come soon under Stoops!

13 – Having seen Harris a few times in person, he is an absolute beast and would be the perfect cornerstone for any D1 school. Long story short, I concur

Stoops is flat out getting it done! This is driving my Cards friends CRAZY and I am LOVING it! Here they are coming off a big Sugar Bowl win and we a pathetic 2-10. Many of them were telling me how now they wouldn’t have to be looking at 3 stars anymore with the Florida win– all they would be getting now is 4 and 5 stars. LOL! Howie was tooting the horn today about the big 3 star commit they just got. Stoops is just getting warmed up boys! Even better days are just around the corner including some 5 stars.

#4 Chris Matthews was a 5.9 4-star out of JUCO. I’ll say our best bet at a 5-star is George Brown (2015). Gonna be tough to get Damien Harris away from Michigan, but with Stoops and company we definitely have a shot.

19 – UL’s football program never has been better than Kentucky’s. You are a MID-MAJOR. Aren’t you all back in the Metro Conference this year or is it the Colonial Athletic???

Seriously, you have like 1 or 2 significant seasons in the history of your program and even those are completely tarnished since your boy Clint Hurt is a fraud. Once you play a real schedule and have even marginal success you might be able to get a little credit but until then take a seat behind us. We have beaten you 4 of the past 6 years after all.

How can any uk fan, say with a straight face that Louisville’s football program hasn’t been historically in the modern era. Not been consistently and overall better! lol Louisville took three hours to do something Uk hasn’t been able to do in what 27 years beat no destroyed Flordia, in a bcs bowl. The lata Uk has never even been close to one. 2-0.

I thought Tim Couch was a five star player. There was one service that ranked him the top player in the country coming out of high school. Dennis Johnson was ranked the top defensive player in the nation coming out of high school.
    19. It’s been a few years, but Kentucky has a national championship in football. That’s a national championship as recognized by the NCAA, unlike your NAIA championship and your NIT championship that you count as national championships in basketball.

I love the UL fans get on here and talk trash. They had one unprecedented season, and got to beat us for one year. Now they have to sit and watch as the sleeping giant BBN wakes up and gets ready to rise. So much momentum for football and basketball, I wouldn’t doubt a UK BCS bowl and a NC in BBall in 4-5 years.

Oh and when we do get that BCS bowl in 4-5 years, BBall will probably have about 2-3 NCAA championships.

@23: I believe you are right, maybe pre-2000 is going back too far, I don’t think internet recruiting sites were around back then. Tim Couch and Dennis Johnson still remain the two biggest football recruits in the entire history of the program.

@19 Have fun ’til Charlie Strong bolts for greener pastures.
