Dutrow Does he take the same stuff he gives his horses?

After word got out that Big Brown loosened a shoe in the Belmont, there has been a lot of insight as to why the Big Guy crapped out.  I mean, we’ve all been walking around and had a rock in our shoe, right?  And, after about ten or twelve steps, we invariably take our shoe off and shake the damn thing out because it’s driving us crazy.  Well, pretend you’re running 35 miles-per-hour, you weigh 1,000 pounds, there’s someone on your back, you need to keep on trucking for a mile-and-a-half, and the rock is actually a nail.  You might not be at your best.

So, I won’t go as far as to blame Dutrow for the shoes.  That’s not really his job.  If you blame anyone, it’s the farrier (not James Farrior…I wouldn’t blame that guy for anything), but this kind of thing happens for reasons beyond human control.  I had a handsome wager on The Cliff’s Edge in Derby 130 all go down the tubes when he THREW two shoes in the mud.  I didn’t blame Nick Zito; it was just a bad break in the slop.

What is despicable is the way in which he questioned Kent Desormeaux pulling up on Big Brown throughout the race, and especially at the end.  It now looks as if Kent may have been the only thing between Big Brown and early retirement, at best.  Still, with Curlin looming in the Breeder’s Cup, they would be right to let the guy go to stud now; there’s no way Big Brown beats Curlin heads up.

And, seriously, is Dutrow not the Kelvin Sampson of horse racing?  You were recently reprimanded for illegal drug use; it swirled around you throughout the Triple Crown chase; and now you’re gonna get busted with ’em a couple weeks after the Belmont.  The guy has no scruples.
