What if Wichita State won?

WSU at FF

Let’s play the completely futile game of ‘what if’ for a moment. I know it seems pointless, but I found myself daydreaming about the underdog story that we could’ve had the chance to see had Wichita State advanced to the national championship game. It would have been an exciting storyline and a lot of fun to watch. Everyone knows the national loves an underdog (just like they love cheering for those overcoming a tragic experience, i.e. Ware and UofL). Here are four nice things that could have come to fruition if WSU beat the Cards:

(1) A chance to see the lowest seed since ’85 Villanova (#8) be a champion. Do you remember that wide-eyed feeling of excitement as Gordon Hayward’s buzzer beating half-court shot floated towards the basket in hope of downing Duke for the title? That feeling is what sports are all about, and that’s when March Madness is at its peak. If the Shockers had beat the Cards, we could have had another chance to witness a great storyline play out in the finals.

(2) Solid proof that this was the year that anyone could beat anyone on any given night. My theory since before the season started was that no team in America was the clear cut best. UofL and IU were good but in no way did I think the preseason #1 and #2 intimidating. Since then, we’ve seen analysts and fans alike call this a ‘down year.’ The lack of surefire future NBA stars and dominant teams led to that conclusion, but the parity was compelling. I was hoping to see no favorites in the title game, and a #9 vs. #4 title game would have been so fitting.

(3) Freedom from incessant Card-fan boasting and ridicule. While Ware’s injury had me cheering for them to beat Duke, I now fear (and already can’t escape) the ridicule from UofL fans about the Cats disappointing season. If the Cards win a title, we won’t hear the end of it. WSU had a chance to insure we could be free of that. Okay, maybe not all the way free. But it wouldn’t have been as bad as them waving a national title in front of our face for another 365 days.

(4) We could’ve witnessed the nation throw this up in unison:

But alas, we cannot. It was a nice run by the Shockers, but the reality of a potential UofL title is setting in. Not sure how I feel about that.

They should have won. For 75% of the game the refs called a fair game and the Shockers lead throughout. For the last 10 minutes the officiating was horrid and Louisville won because of it. Along with swallowing their whistles as UL fouled 2-4 times per possession, they also made the terrible double foul call and the WORST call I may have ever seen with the jump ball at the end.

You realize a #9 seed is lower than a #8 seed, right?? Lowest seed since #8 doesn’t really work here… You get how that works, right??

As a Cardinal fan, if we are fortunate enough to beat an outstanding Michigan team tomorrow night, I will feel more relief than elation. The past two weeks have been a rollercoaster ride of emotions. I would hope most of my fellow UofL fans would have enough class to not gloat. Both UK and UofL have storied traditions, and enthusiastic fanbases. I wish for once the two sides could just coexist, and respect one another’s greatness. The state of Kentucky is indeed the home of college basketball greatness.

Even if the tards don’t win the championship, their season ends playing in the big dance. Ours ended in a high school gym against gulp”ROBERT MORRIS”. So , give credit where it’s due the tards had a story book season across the board in all sports. So , being a cat fan i am not going to act like a fool and down play their accomplishments’ this year.
We had our thing last year, and we can’t and will not always be on top. Sometimes, just be civil about things.

    3) He’s saying that Wichita St. would have been the lowest seeded team since the 1985 #8 seed Villanova team won the title. He’s not making a direct comparison or calling them the lowest seeded team ever. Clearly, he says “since ’85”. This means that between ’86 and the present a team seeded 8 or lower hasn’t won the title. You get how that works, right?

I hope the Cards win because when UK wins it next year that will be 3 in a row for the state of Kentucky. Then maybe we won’t have to listen to how Duke and Carolina are the nation’s best rivalry. Besides, if Louisville never wins anything, there will be no rivalry. Let’s have a little old fashioned competition because it makes for more fun when we beat them. I actually like this particular team and that is unusual.

Agree with #5. I’m a Cats fan all the way but I’d rather see the NCAA champ come from the state of Kentucky for 3 years straight…counting 14′ for the Cats of course…than the trophy land in Michigan. It is what it is….we greatly under performed and we were bad…they lived up to their ranking and they were good in 2013′. By the way my favorite all time moment as a Cat fan was letting my Super Dome Final 4 seat cushion fly when the clock hit zero against the Cards last year on Saturday night in NOLA!

I agree with number 8. The refs let Van Treese run over a guy on the in-bounds play, the mystical double foul and then the jump ball. The refs were hard on the Cards early but let them do what they always do, enjoy pressure sefense without calling a foul.

People like to complain about that questioable jump ball. But no one mentions the one a few minutes earlier where Siva ripped it away from a WSU player and would likely had led to a hoop. Refs instead called a jump ball. The ball was tied up for less time than the one in question. Not to mention the fact that the Baker kid walked on the last supposed held ball.

Really not sure why people are even thinking about a UofL title. Michigan is going to win this game tomorrow people. UofL looks like a team who has been winning games because they are “expected too”. Michigan on the other hand looks like a team that has been on a mission in the tourney. Certainly a refuse to lose mentality. As ive said in a couple other posts Michigan has the only guard in the country that can truly break UofL’s press in Trey Burke and Hardaway Jr is a great 2 guard whos just been down a bit in the tourney. McGary has played like a man possessed and they have great role players in Robinson Jr, Stauskis (spelling?), Horford, etc. Michigan 77 UofL 71. Go (the other) Big Blue

It’s been a constant bombardment of UL & Ware for a week. Can only imagine what winning would be like. Hell, there are still 91′ Fiesta Bowl billboards around town. Their desparation for anything has only been surpassed by IU recently, but still obnoxious.

And what’s the over under for shootings in celebration? We’re sitting at 1. I guess we celebrate differently; UK college kids burn nasty couches, UL folks shoot nasty people.

Personally, I am not that worried about Louisville winning it all. Now, had they won it with Rick before we had won another title, that would be much harder to take. But I still don’t think we remember how unique and special last year was. Not just that we won the title but that we had the opportunity to beat our two greatest rivals along the way in Indiana and Louisville. And not to mention that we also beat a team that is another top basketball program in Kansas for the title. It was a story-book like year in which our head coach also had the opportunity to best the coach that ruined his undefeated season with Memphis in 2008.

We are the Yankees of college basketball. We are going to win more champions than everyone else, but we can’t win one every year. Maybe I’m not that disturbed about it because I don’t have to put up with Louisville fans like most of you do. I did have a text from a Louisville fan that I consider a friend that said, “In Louisville today celebrating the victory.” I replied, “You should celebrate, 27 years is a long time to wait to be in the title game… Maybe they won’t choke.” So I’m not going to kick my cat or throw a lamp through the window if the Cards win tomorrow. The fact is, they will never have the ability to sustain excellence. Sure, we have down years, but when it comes to Kentucky Basketball the question isn’t “if” we will another title, but “when.”

I never understood why fans of any team but especially UK feel the need to defend the Wildcats to anyone for anything. Their history and accomplishments speak for themselves. So what if Louisville wins tomorrow night and so what if UK had a crappy year and lost to Robert Morris. Really? UK is UK and I don’t waste my time arguing with people that try to bring them down because at the end of the day UK is the greatest tradition in basketball history and if someone doesn’t want to accept that their ignorance isn’t worth engaging in.

Wichita State did win, outplayed and outcoached Lullville. But Louisville outscored them because they got rattled by the press for a couple of minutes. I think Michigan will win actually, if they are hitting any threes at all. But if not, Rupp next year should be a very interesting place for the defending national champs.

Utter and complete SICKNESS. Anyone who says they wanted loserville to
win (unless they are a troll invadind this site), will realize the complete foolishness of that thinking. loserville and all their ilk, hate everything and anything BLUE with an eternal passion. Keeping them down is the obly way to have it. Kentucky must always DOMINATE them year by year.

They already are aware we are back in spades next season. Their primary reason for wanting to win so bad this year is twofold, #1, they haven’t won a title in over twenty-seven years!
and #2, they sat idily by last year and watched BBN hang another banner, our Eighth overall.

If ul wins a title once every twenty-seven years it will take them One-hundred and forty years
just to catch us, provided we haven’t won another eight by that time!, Go BLUE & Michigan too!

Refs poor job last two minutes changing how to call the game complete opposite as they called the entire previous minutes. Van Teese palm hand strike to Bakers face should’ve been flagrant 1. Jump ball call was worse call of game especially after photo shots and replay. Down year? Heck no! The game has gotten more competitive across the board.

I’m nevertheless pondering on the opposite points of view, but I’m leaning to a good extent toward yours. And irrespective, that’s what’s so perfect about modern-day democracy and the market of ideas online.
