As Kentucky fans, we “hate” a lot of teams. And people. But, if you ask a group of Kentucky fans which teams they hate the most, you’ll likely hear several different answers. We all have our own “hate rankings,” dependent on a number of factors:
– Background: I really hope your family cheered for Kentucky while you were growing up. If not, I’m sorry. But, who did they hate? In our household, Louisville and Tennessee seemed to be the main enemies. This usually has a big influence on your hate rankings.
– Location: Someone from Southern Kentucky may hate Tennessee more than someone from Northern Kentucky, while a Cat fan in Louisville may hate the Cards more than any other team. A Kentucky fan who went to college in North Carolina may especially hate the Tarheels and Blue Devils because they lived in unfriendly waters for so long. As a Cat fan in Nashville, I reserve special hate for Tennessee (Vandy’s not really worth the energy).
– Age: I’m 27. Therefore, I probably don’t appreciate the Kentucky/Indiana rivalry as much as I should, because, frankly, it hasn’t really existed for most of my lifetime (that and I’m from Central KY, where IU hate is relatively tepid).
With all of this in mind and a lot of time on my hands, I created my own “Hate Chart,” starting with “The Shot” in 1992. As you can see, my hate has ebbed and flowed for each team over the years, with different coaches, wins, losses, and one red letter event involving “Benedictino.”
So my final hate rankings are as follows:
4) North Carolina
