I pretty much take any coach’s comments about staying with a grain of salt. If he leaves for the NBA so be it. I harbor no ill will and wish him well. He worked his tail off while he was here and brought us a title.

I’m not a conspiracy theory type of guy. But coaches say all the time “I’m not going anywhere”, do with that what you wish. Anybody who is hanging on to every word a coach says is just wrong. At the end of the day these guys do what they want. Having said all of that, I don’t think Cal goes anywhere this year. If you put a gun to my head and made me answer, I’d say he’ll be here next year. But, I still wouldn’t be shocked if he left.

Why would Cal leave college basketball where the top tier coaches dominate the game and go to the player dominated NBA? Is he that dumb? Of course not – wise up Ryan.

If the current regime of NCAA investigators were around when UCLA was dominate, would any of those championships be vacated? I say half of them would be gone. However, not sure how many of ours would be, also.

Did Coach K get his 1st title in his 3rd year at Duke? That makes a huge difference. Plus Cal gets easier recruiting at UK than Kat Duke. I think it is doable.

  14. bleedblueky
    10:15 am April 5, 2012 Permalink

Morning Matt – my problem with these three big TV networks is NBC evening news had only mentioned women’s champion team (Baylor) last night; however, never bothered to mention men’s champion(UK)since we won.

And the worst is ABC chose to put Lexington’s riot on their Sunday’s headline news but nothing else when we won.

    What bunch of jerks 🙁

  15. JBazz

Everybody’s trying to compare Cal to Rick leaving for the NBA. Remember, Rick had some success in the NBA before he came to Kentucky. Cal’s previous tenure in the NBA was by and large a failure. Not only that, but the Knicks are going to make sure Phil Jackson doesn’t want the job before they even consider anyone else. Add to that Cal’s stated plight to help kids realize their dreams of playing in the NBA and making NBA dollars and you have to feel pretty good about him staying for a while.

Coach K coached for 15 years before winning a title, is that part of his coaching career? of course it is Matty.

Then he won 3 in about 10 years and 4 in 20 years.

With regard to Cal getting 4 more championships before retirement while Coach K has 4 in 30 years, I’d point out that Cal is a better recruiter than Coach K. You can be the greatest coach in the world but you also need talent to win and *if* Cal is a lesser coach than Krzyzewski, then I’d say he has this far made up for it with a higher level of talent.

  21. Waddy/Peytona
    10:18 am April 5, 2012 Permalink

Matt, I think Coach Cal has to decide if he’s a college coach or NBA coach before it starts to hurt recruiting like it did Pitino at end of his UK tenure

We need a Kentucky Pro Am. We could do something similar to the NC Pro Am. Google it and look at the roster. We can get together pro, college, and amateur basketball players (current and former) that have anything to do with the commonwealth. Think of the fun we could have. Wall v Knight v Teauge v Ronda v hockey. Lamb v Knight v Meeks v Prince in a game of knockout. Hell, you could even throw Siva and Kourick in there. Oh yeah, then there would be the greatest dunk contest of all time.

I love Cal. I want him to stay and coach for BBN. That said, UK is not Duke, Gonzaga, Syracuse, or even the modern day UCLA. We are a program that will keep winning titles. We have one titles under 5 coaches. No other program comes close to that. Cal will be a storied chapter in our history, but he will not solely define it. Roll, Blue!

Major is a higher rank than Sergeant. Police departments are completely different than military ranks but normally if they have a major rank, it still is a higher rank than a sergeant.

In the military, a Major is an officer rank while any kind of sergeant is an enlisted rank. Major is about midway up the officer’s rank scale (Officer rank 4 or O4) and falls just above Captain and just below Lt. Colonel (note a Navy Captain is an O6 which further confuses things). The military services all have a little different rank structures with relation to enlisted ranks. There are several different kinds of sergeants in the various military services.

The reason that UK is the greatest all-time program is because our success is not tied to one or two coaches. Cal is the FIFTH coach to win a title at UK. I don’t believe any other school has more than two coaches who have won a title.

Matt, I went to Syracuse, and everything you’ve said is true, which makes it a depressing place to live if you’re not a college student. But student life is quite different, and it’s a very fun place to go to school. Plenty of partying to be had, especially for the “student athletes.”

@203 – I think it’s opposite with Muhammad. I think he and his parents BOTH want UCLA, but Cal and staff are recruiting him with a promising pitch. It’s a business type of pitch = we’ll get you better, we’ll make you the #1 overall pick, we’ll play for another title.

What I think matters to Muhammad is staying close to home, L.A. as a major media market itself, city life, almost guaranteed Adidas deal, playing with Kyle Anderson, being the man as opposed to a teammate.

I never thought we’d get Shabazz and have been OK with that for a while. Get Noel, Pollard and/or Jefferson and sell them on having to do it together. Muhammad doesn’t need UK, and doesn’t necessarily want UK, he’s just having a tough time saying “no”.
