Well This is Awkward

picture from Steve Jones

The picture above showcases the odd scene going on in Louisville tonight as John Calipari and Rick Pitino are at Butler High School watching Derek Willis of Bullitt East on the court. The 2013 recruit is shaping up to be one of the only UK vs UL battles of the 2013 year and his presence in-state makes the recruitment take on even more meaning. As you can see, the presence of the two coaches has caused quite a stir and they even have attracted one large autograph line between the two of them. Calipari is in the blue, Pitino in the black and the space between them is a metaphor for something much greater.

Is that Fifteeno with his legs crossed (tan khaki’s)? And Coach Cal on the far right, about 3 seats down from him? And is that Cops? I’m with #2, I’m not sure what’s going on here either.

Pitino is left of the mob of people, wearing black, with his back against the wall. Calipari is to the right of the mob of people, wearing blue, with his back to the camera.

looks like Rick is on the left a few feet down with his legs crossed…but what is hilarious is that all of the people look to be hovering around Cal!!!

OK OK OK, I get it now. #12 just made it very clear. Coach Cal is in the blue (standing top right with his back to camera) and Ricky 3 Smacks is sitting (in all black) with his legs crossed to Coach Cal’s left. Looks like the crowd is ignoring 3 smacks and giving Cal all the attention. LOL.

    GO COACH CAL!!!!!

My friends and I actually sat near both of them.. Pitino was there early at the top. Cal come in, was mobbed, sat down near Rick with out acknowledging him. Then I think it was a timeout early that Cal turned around and greeted Pitinos group and shook hands and talked for a minute… didn’t seem awkward. Both were taking pictures all night. We were just going to see BE and Willis, pretty wild to see them walk through the door.

I go to butler. This kid a ok. I say hes overrated. He’s 6″9 but very slim. He had only like 8 points idk how many rebounds and like 3 blocks. The man in the blue at the upper right is cal. Rick is sittin straight up though the middle of the line

I was there when Rick came in, he was rude to the people on his way up the steps, Cal was his usual personable self. It’s sad to see Rick has become such a bitter old man compared to when he was at UK.

The two cops what are they doing? Waiting to pepper spray or taser a kid? Or just compiling that over-time so they can retire even earlier under hazardous duty pay?

Hey Jessie I was one of the off duty officers and you are absolutley correct Cal had a bad attitude and Rick was very approachable. cal’s people had informed us that he expected to be mobbed I told his staff this is not lexington. And another bit Cal was really doing things to be noticed and beleive me Rick owned the gym. This his town.

I’ll probably get raked over the coals for this but I have a hard time hating Pitino as much as some of you folks. The man basically rebuilt our program from probation to winning a national championship. He has admitted on more than one occasion that leaving UK was a regret. I understand that coming back to UL of all places was/is like a dagger through the heart for some (a lot?) of fans. I would have preferred that he go somewhere else, too. But how can you not look at Pitino now and kinda feel sorry for him (insofar as his post-UK career is concerned)? Every day he wakes up knowing that now we have another high profile coach who has come in and made us relevant again in the post season and who 1) by all accounts, Pitino doesn’t like and 2) who has everything that Pitino regrets giving up? I *hate* Louisville as a program (players, athletics dept, fans, etc.) and I don’t like the fact that Pitino chose to return there after leaving Kentucky. I just can’t find it in me to hate him for it. Especially not now that we have Coach Cal. 😉

Adolph Rupp was an ass too, so who cares if Coach Cal is a jerk? He’s undefeated in Rupp so far, so get over it. Tubby was not a jerk and look what he did for us.

    Coach Cal for President!

I was one of the off-duty officers, except I came with Billy Gillispie. I broke up a scuffle when a school official tried to confiscate Billy’s flask. Billy’s people told me to make sure he wasn’t too drunk for the JV game. Unfortunately, he had to “take a nap” at the end of the first quarter.

I was there, I gotta agree with 36. Rick seemed at home, personable. Cal was acting like a celebrity when honestly no one was giving him THAT level of attention. Quite disappointing, hoping it was just a circumstantial thing.
