Remember Tyrone Nash? Aww sure you do…he was the player who decided to go to prep school instead of UK and then after prep school found his way to Notre Dame. Now, the Cats probably lucked out as he is averaging a grand total of 3 points and 3 rebounds for the season. But the Nash recruitment was possibly the low point of the “UK cant recruit” part of the Tubby era. Here in honor of Tyrone is a post from this site on July 11, 2006…and for those who say that I never criticized the former coach here, you can feel my depression in this post:
The always bizarre and usually depressing world of Kentucky basketball recruiting became even more frustrating with word today that current Kentucky 06 power forward recruit Tyrone Nash, who Tubby Smith discovered out of nowhere and offered a scholarship, may now need more time before he makes his ultimate decision. According to Nash, he still does not know whether he will accept the UK scholarship offer and attend the school this fall or go with one of his other options, which includes going to Stanford this fall on scholarship, visiting Indiana or Notre Dame to pursue a scholarship there or attending prep school this year and wait for offers for the 07 recruiting class.
I wont belabor this point, but I must say that the whole Nash saga is baffling to me. I am not a recruiting Chicken Little who believes that Kentucky recruiting is falling apart. The Cats had the number one overall class three years ago and have a solid class starting this fall. In addition if, and this is a big if, the Cats can get commitments this fall from Patrick Patterson and Jai Lucas, then they will be in as good a position talentwise as they have been in a number of years.
Having said that, if Tyrone Nash chooses to attend a PREP SCHOOL and hold out the hope of other scholarship offers next year instead of coming to UK this fall or at least committing to the Cats for 07…..well then I dont quite know what to say. Here is a kid who had virtually no major college exposure and had a number of schools considering him for next year, but NO GUARANTEES existed. Then Kentucky comes along….only the winningest program in college basketball history for those of you that have forgotten…..and offers a scholarship…..a scholarship that could guarantee Nash the ability to play for the most rabid fans in the country on one of the most visible of all stages.
If the kid chooses another year of glorified high school over that…..well, we are hurting folks.
Tyrone Nash, we hardly knew you, and now we see you again…..
