Wednesday’s Football Practice Notes

South Carolina is coming to town this weekend with one of the most feared pass rushes in the nation. Both Devin Taylor and Jadeveon Clowney stand above 6’6, and are relentless in their pursuit of the quarterback. Kentucky will have their hands full, not only trying to ease QB Maxwell Smith into the game plan after a week off, but keeping him upright, as well. The biggest story in practice remains the health of Smith, and his availability for Saturday’s game.

“He’ll be ready to play Saturday,” Coach Phillips said when asked about Smith’s availability. “Today was a day off for [Smith], we have him on a Tuesday, Thursday schedule, and he should be able to throw tomorrow.”

-Smith did get some reps with the first-team, handing the ball off to the running backs, but all of the passing reps went to Freshman QB Jalen Whitlow. The plan continues to have Whitlow start in place of Smith if he isn’t able to suit up.

-So how did Whitlow do with the first-team today? “Well, he didn’t look God-awful.” Phillips remarked. Uh-oh.

-Whitlow beat out fellow freshman QB, Patrick Towles, for the third quarterback spot, but Phillips doesn’t think that say a whole lot about the type of career Towles can have at Kentucky. “He’ll be a great quarterback in a couple of years. His skills work well in this system.” Phillips said that redshirting Towles has to do with his future development, too.

-Smith thinks the pain his shoulder is going to last the entire year, but he’s prepared to deal with it. Smith said his shoulder doesn’t feel as bad as when he injured it last year against UGA. “I could barely lift my arm a couple days after that. This injury is definitely less severe.”

-Smith said post-season surgery hasn’t been discussed, but he didn’t say to rule it out, either.

OT Kevin Mitchell doesn’t think that Kentucky will prepare for USC’s pass rush any differently than the rest of the schedule. Mitchell says that the offensive line has to “play as a group and trust their technique” if they want to be successful.

-Mitchell says there is a little added pressure to keep Smith, with his shoulder injury, away from Clowney and Taylor.

We should know more about the status of Smith after tomorrow’s practice. He will likely throw, unless a setback occurs. If he can’t go, Whitlow will be the starter vs. USC.

If Max can’t go, Whitlow will rock the house this Saturday night. If Max can go, look for Whitlow to run the Wildcat this Saturday. Reese Phillips a talented commit will be here next year. Also there is another kid from GA who is considering the Cats for next season.

does anyone think Towles will ever be a QB in Joker’s system? I have a feeling Towles will be the QB and it will be someone else’s system!

“Athletic dual purpose” Quarterback versus “passing” Quarterback. Passing Quarterback sustains a “shoulder injury” and “athletic dual purpose” Quarterback wins out. Is this a repeat of the Newton – Mossakowski situation?

If I’m Joker’s position, I say whatever so Towles dad shuts up. Way to many problems this season to even worry about a UK quarterback in a couple of years.

Let Towles play. Stop running off good quarterbacks because they are freshman.

Towles is probably realizing this is Max’s job for the next 2 years and he will have to compete with Jalen for the job the last 2 years. Knowone including Towles knew Max was going to be this good when Towles signed.

Not gonna matter who QB’s Sat night. If Towles is all that, he’ll be playing for a new coach in 2013.

Trinity quarterback Travis Wright is ranked the number 19 dual treat quarterback in USA. Wright doesn’t have an division 1 offer. No comparison of Trinity’s quarterback and his passinng game against Highlands the past two seasons. Wake up Joker.

first, i think joker’s reasoning on whitlow/towles is whitlow (assuming both towles and whitlow know an equal fraction of the playbook) is not as dependent on his knowledge of the playbook as is towles due to whitlow’s ability to improvise with his feet. i think in the long run towles will be the better of the two but since he’s not as mobile he lives and dies on knowing routes and proper check downs.
second, i’ve had a class 3 separated shoulder and two years later it still slides in and out of socket nearly everyday. i can sympathize with max’s condition after the georgia game last year and re-aggravating the injury unfortunately is very, very easy.

#12, Reese Phillips committed as QB. Does anyone have a hint if we are near to another 2013 commit. Wright would be great but there is a kid named Eddie (cannot think of last name) from GA that’s sniffing at UK.

Tim Couch would have never played for Joker because of Jokers system. To much of a downfield qb for Joker’s conservative game and Joker favoring the run over the pass.

Put Pat Towles in that same catagory as Couch. Joker’s system will never fit Towles. Better find a coach that has a system for a passing qb (Towles) and move Whitlow to a receiver. Maybe Whitlow could be used in the wildcat when needed.

Ummmmmmm one of Couch’s biggest problems in the pros was that he couldnt throw downfield with accuracy. And if you go back and check the tapes they ran a whole lot of screen passes, and quick slants, with a couple of bombs down the field the Craig Yeast. Couch and Yeast were deadly with the quick slants.

Do you think that USC will come with a lot of pressure if Whitlow is in the game, since UK coaches have told everybody that he only knows 10% of the playbook, and throws “not god-awful”? It is better for Towles to be 2 years from Smith, and 1 year from Whitlow.

#19….If I recall correctly Couch had to prove to the Browns that he could make all the throws in his tryouts. As to way that never panned out in actual games we may never know the truth. I have a gut feeling that Couch was thrown to the dogs must to early in his career.

Mummy’s offence was geared to the quick screens and slants. Get the ball in the hands of your best athlets as often as possible and hope they can break it big. But that only works if you can extend the field and Couch could extend the field. That’s why I refer to Couch and Towles as downfield qbs.

    # 25……I assume that because no major school recruited him to play qb. He was recruited for being a rgood athlete. Joker promised to give him a shot at qb. I hope he can throw downfield because he’s a CAT.

Towles was recruited as a pure passer and not a runner. Joker relies on one who is aged in his system and not so much on talent. That’s why I think that Couch and Towles could never fit into Joker’s system. That is why Cal alters his system to the great talent he recruits. Joker is somewhat like Bill Curry, he can’t change. As of now go Whitlow.

what joker needs to do is put 2 half backs out at once one being newton (he can pass it every now and then) but manly to run and to confuse the (D) that would open up some awesome play action passes to (witch Smith seems to be OK at…’ some one help me get this to joker it could help a lot

You have revealed Joker’s problem from the get-go. Having one QB taking snaps for one type of play & another QB for another play in practice 3 days before a game is [email protected] stupid. No one can ever make up their minds about anything on this staff and this type of indecision kills the team time & time again.

26 you don’t know what your talking about. Ol miss and others offered him as QB just Google his name. If Malzahn at Auburn and a bunch others even tho they had a run heavy offense and alternated with another D1 qb. Know what your saying before u speak. If Malzahn would have stayed at Auburn he probably would be there. Towels played week high school ball and it showed in practice. If walk on wouldn’t have quit he would be 5th on the chart. Phillips don’t want to really tell it how it is.

(To fan fan)…This is not a put down on Whitlow. In the 6A championship game (Pratville vs Hoover) two giants in Ala hs football, Justin Thomas was the mvp. Thomas was Pratville’s qb and had over 300 yds of total offence. I am sure that Whitlow was mvp in many other games.

My knowledge about Whitlow is that Joker offered him a shot at qb if he came to UK. He had offers from Ole Miss, Memphis, Ark. St, S Ala, Samford, amoung others. Don’t you think that Saban could have made room if he really wanted him? Ala signed two other players off that team.

Whitlow is the backup qb because of his running ability and not because he is a better passer than Towles. That imformation comes straight from the coashing staff. Neither he nor Towles knew enought about Joker’s play book, so Whitlow wins out because he is the better runner. Those are the facts.
