We May Be A 4 Seed – But We’ve Already Won A Championship (Fringe Sports Edition)
Not lost in all the basketball glory this past weekend was the Kentucky Rifle’s team huge win in the NCAA tournament. Since I began covering the fringe sports around UK, the rifle team has quickly become one of my favorites. Mainly because they’re just so damn good. While the Kentucky Rifle team has had great success over the past 17 years, and finished in the top ten most every year, they had yet to win the national title.
Winning their first NCAA Title wasn’t easy though, as Kentucky had to hold off a streaking West Virginia team on the final day. They went into Saturday with a 7 point lead, and finished the day with a 3 one. Close, but enough to take home the hardware.
Congratulations to UK Coach Harry Mullin’s Gat Cats, and we hope to see much more from you in the future.

Over the course of the day I have filled out several brackets, and every time I get to the SE bracket I get more and more upset seeing Florida as the 2-seed… Thuck Fis!
Great job UK Rifle!! WE ARE UK and we love NCAA Champions at any sport and these guys and gal work just as hard as anyone else representing our school and the entire state, so Congrats and Go Rifle Cats!! 2 – Be careful what you say because we might just line you up for target practice next year! Hint: THEY DON’T MISS!!

back when I was in high school I got into shooting competitively during the offseason and summer, it was always a passion of mine (now the army pays me to shoot). I remember going to some tourney’s UK would put on and just how good they were then, the only team better then them back in the day (6-8 years ago) was Alaska-Fairbanks. I’ve followed them ever since I quit shooting to do other sports and had a few former teammates end up shooting for them and some other colleges. Such a great and well run program, Coach Mullen is a class act and well deserving of this. It is a really hard mental and physical sport despite what some might think… Congrats UK Rifle Team!!!

I’m shocked the Rifle team doesn’t have a long string of Champ’s, like the cheerleading squad, to be honest. I mean, think about it…. this is a sport rednecks should just naturally DOMINATE.
I was a freshman at UK with the UK Rifle Coach, Harry Mullins. He is a good man. My son and I were on campus tour recently and stopped by his office in the Craft Center. He has some awesome hardware/trophies in his office. It is great to that he finally won the BIG one. They have been runner up a couple of times in the last 10 years. We use to call Harry Georgia since he was the only one on our floor from Georgia. He is Kentucky all the way now. Check out the article in the Sunday Herald-Leader.
