Watch Calipari say his team isn’t in shape
Here is the press conference from last night’s win over Samford. Watch as Cal says, “Strap ’em up, boys” when talking about his plan to run his team for 20-30 minutes every morning at 7:00 a.m. over the next three weeks.
So, to be clear, they are or aren’t in shape?

Think this team had a sense of entitlement coming in. In was bound to happen to one of these classes. So much success early for the past few teams that with so many young kids and no one in place to guide them differently, this year’s team was setup for that fall. It’s ok, they will learn and be better for it, will just take longer.
if strong officially stays with uofl can matt get clay travis on the show asap???
all that guy (UT version of matt) has done is call arky fans delusional & said auburn was a dumpster fire of a job. yet he honestly sees UT as better job than ND.
but gruden, fisher, gundy, fedora, strong, etc, etc have turned UT down
“Anyone remember Josh Harrelson, changed his life”. That is the best qoute in the whole press conference. These boys are in for a world of hurt. Hope it changes their play. This team is hard to watch and to be honest, hard to even like.
I love this man. Sometimes you have to learn the hard way! Do it right do it light, do it wrong do it all day long! lol
This whole “out of shape” thing reminds me of when a parent is incapable of getting a 3 year old to listen, and resorts to yelling and physical consequences, like he is punishing them for being just kids or something.
My question is why weren’t they already in shape? They’ve been here since Summer, and he has had them for a month and a half. Surely, it didn’t take 8 games for Cal to recognize this. That being said, I know that he will bust their asses over the next three weeks, so hopefully we’ll see a different team by the New Year.
Drew he actually says “Strap ’em ON boys”. Might want to change that.
5 & 6) Would you like some cheese to go with your whine?
I’m with the radio caller form this morning. Put Kyle on P90X!
6 – My guess is they’ll be the most well conditioned yet uninspired and rudderless college team in the country by Christmas.
This is always my favorite time of year for basketball, when you can see the team improve. Camp Cal always seems to help, and I think this team probably needs it more than the past three. Funny that our most motivated, high motor player should still be in high school.
Just shows you how talented and strong last years team was. This team is preforming exactly how MOST freshman preform. We have been spoiled at the high functioning, high level kids we have had. This team will still be ok. You all can brow beat all you want, but I am like Cal and still like this team a lot. Once the holidays get here and he goes to three a days is when the real coaching goes on.
8. Not whining in the least. It’s a completely fair and legit question.
One thing my dad, who is 79 pointes out – this team never looks happy when they play. No smiles. Hardly any high fiving. I know being “happy” has nothing to do with skill. It does effect the game however. Look at last year’s team. They were always smiling, giving “fives” and doing fist pumps.
This team looks lazy even when they do something good. Pump the crowd up for God’s sake!
If Kyle Wiltjer spent half as much time in the gym practicing his shot as he does making stupid YouTube videos, we’d have a Lofton/Jenkins type player!
6/13-only a legit question if you’re not paying attention. or if you simply dont know what you’re talking bout.
cal has repeatedly said, year after year after year, there are so many things his teams need to work on early in the year when they’re FR, BUT you can only expect them to absorb one or two things at a time.
this explains why he won’t work on certain game situations or defenses or show opponent film early on.
or, maybe the obvious answer, after 25+ years of coaching cal knows he can run them into the ground during the break with more practice time.
TROLLS FER DAYZ
1) Cal’s clearly pissed, and rightfully so.
2) I use this tactic all the time when I don’t want to attack my kid’s character. “You’re not being a bad sport, so you MUST be tired. It’s time to go to bed.” “Oh no no, I’m not tired. I’ll be good.”
He’s saving their face for just being straight lazy in games. The conditioning may help some physically, but this is a mental game Cal’s got going on.
Kyle, Polsen and Harrow are not freshman. This conditioning excuse
is total bs, and no leader? gtfoh. Cal is paid well to turn them into
leaders(he claims nba pros) and get them ready for the season.
So now after he conditions them, and they dont perform – who will bite the bullet?
9. p90X is a weight loss program for overweight people. Kyle doesn’t have any weight to lose. Kyle needs to be on a mass building weight training program in the gym and eat everything in sight.
19 – Shut up. I’m sure Cal is doing the best he can, and I still think by March this team will be one you don’t want to face. What would you like to do, fire Cal and hire someone else? Idiot.
#20 P90x cannot be done by fatties, way too intensive, it’s actually for people in mediocre shape and it gets you ripped.
Does this team do strength and conditioning? Any weight training? Guess not..
You would think with Rock Oliver they wouldn’t look like weak starving 3rd worlders..
5. go trim your line beard and have a shot of Crown. They’ll be in plenty good shape when they play the Tards. I know you hate to see this “conditioning” talk just a few weeks before they visit the Yuk center. kinda scary aint it?
22. I will give you that. Fatties can’t do p90x, but its still a weight loss program to lose fat. It’s not for gaining muscle mass/weight, which is what Kyle needs to do. Kyle needs steak and potatoes, oats, chicken and get in the gym several days a week, and do compound exercises..bench press, deadlifts/squats (if he can), overhead press..etc.
A fat guy would drop dead of a heart attack if he tried
to do that workout. That being said so would Kyle.
#18- you are absolutely correct. This team isn’t so much “out of shape” as they are “lazy freshmen.” And you see it in how Cal handled that presser. He’s clearly calling the players out and challenging them. I love it.
26. While I agree a fat guy can’t do p90x, if Kyle did p90x he would look skinnier and weaker than he does now. Not a good thing.
In past years, didn’t Cal take Darius Miller to a boxing/MMA gym? And you see how much of a physical specimen Darius is. Why can’t he take them back to a gym like that?
Shut up? im gonna approach this assuming your a female. You see there
is nothing wrong with calling a man on his BS, in fact he will respect
you more for it. Now that hardly qualifies as calling for his job,
and only a idiot will ask no questions. And if you are a man, grow a pair.
I thought Cal had a rule that every person on his teams had to be able to bench press 200 lbs at least one rep? I guarantee you Kyle can not bench press 200 lbs.
Now what was Cal trying to say, exactly?
Kyle could certainly benefit from using P90X. The kid barely has any muscle and not explosiveness whatsoever. The kid has excess weight in the lower body region that only makes him slower. Those exercises would get him moving a little quicker, no doubt.
Cal probably thought the kids were in better shape than they were and from their recent play have shown sluggishness. Getting them in better condition will only have a positive effect as they obviously need more energy out there on the floor. If I was the coach, they would be running a combination of long distances and sprints every other day. No reason for them not to be in tip-top shape.
We need to get 5% more conditioned boys… and while we are it get 5% more tougher.
Whats so awesome is that now Cal is actually going to get a chance to coach his team into shape and get some credit for it. No offence to him but any one of of could have coached MKG and he would have looked like an all american but if he gets this group into shape it could go down as his greatest coaching job! Go Cats! #CampCal
Cal’s message to the team in that entire video I think was summed up completely at the 7:17 mark.
16. Fair enough. But, being in shape has nothing to do with knowing how to run a zone offense or watching an opponent’s game tape. I raised the question because it isn’t something that we have dealt with in Cal’s tenure. It may very well be the players own fault.
34. you’re probably right about that
And why does it say my comment is awaiting moderation? Does KSR not allow the truth to be spoken?
Folks, read between the lines. Do you think they REALLY aren’t in shape? That’s coachspeak for “Okay. You don’t have to compete and play, we’ll run instead.” Ever seen Mr. Baseball with Tom Selleck? Go to the part, during his training, where he gets frustrated with everything while doing BP with golf balls and he blows up and tells the coach “I wanna hit baseballs!” And then realized what he said. These guys are going to be saying, “I wanna play basketball!”
Every teams superbowl!! I love that comment. Yeah he’s right, you’re every teams superbowl on that weak a$z schedule. its not a superbowl game when you play the big boys!!!!!
They are every teams SuperBowl, if you mean UK is the 1990s Buffalo Bills. And has anyone told kentucky fans the superbowl is football? You dont here football teams say “We are everyones NBA Finals”
6 – They are in shape for high school basketball, but not college. He also might be talking about their mental shape, when he says “they are not in shape”.
#3 I agree with you..this team is hard to like, especially Poythris & Goodwin. They really have an attitude. It’s like Cal can’t tell them anything, they already know it all.
I still can’t believe these foolish kids would force Cal’s hand on this.
Cal’s the type of coach you bring everything you have AND THEN he will help you find a whole world of you that you didn’t know existed.
If you don’t bring everything, then he can’t help you find anything else. Then it becomes just a struggle between kids just trying to offer what they think they have (which is several levels down from the above example).
Up until now, Cal has been better at picking the RIGHT guys.
Looks like we have some DIVA’s in the Wildcat lodge. Root em’ out Cal!
