Vote eRUPPtion Zone for best student section

Kentucky may not have the best win-loss record, may not have the best arena, may not even have a legitimate claim to the best student section, but that’s no fault of Big Blue Nation. We’re just victims of an imperfect arena situation. But that doesn’t have to stop us from vote-bombing another poll and showcasing the power of our fan base. Kentucky’s eRUPPtion Zone has been nominated as one of the top college basketball student sections in the country by the Naismith Awards for the Best Student Section of the Year. And Cats fans will have a say in determining the most deserving student section.

Visit I Love College Hoops on Facebook to vote once per day through February 6. By sharing the contest with friends on Facebook you’ll get an extra vote for every person you refer who enters the contest. And the 25 voters who successfully refer the most people will score a $25 gift card.

The current leader is Virginia Commonwealth, followed by Kansas and Purdue. Kentucky isn’t anywhere to be found in the top 25 and is currently fifth among all Southeastern Conference teams, behind the likes of Missouri and Arkansas.

The Naismith Student Section of the Year Award will be determined through two rounds of public votes, combined with a scoring of finalists by the Naismith Awards Board of Selectors, which will review criteria such as the student section’s name and attendance, as well as photos, video, and a write-up submitted by the nominating school

The winning school receives $10,000 to its general scholarship fund, and bragging rights for a year. Kansas’ 4,000-seat student section won the inaugural award in 2012. So what are you waiting on? Get to voting.

Well if it were true i would vote for them……but unlike these other schools that give the students the entire length of the court and dont just stick them in the endzone and upstairs, its hard to vote for them…….. give the students the sidelines or both endzones and we would have best student section every year, and you would really have that SIXTH MAN

Never have understood why they put the students on the UK end for the 2nd half?? Why not use the living bodies in the lower arena to intimidate the opponents at the end of games?

im with #3. we have got to step our game up. Rupp is quiet these days. I get the rich donor situation but all the blue hair needs to be pushed up and make room for rowdy drunk kids.

Ummmmm…the eRUPPtion zone shouldn’t even be in the top 10…no comparison to a Duke or even an IU as much as it hurts to say that.

That’s a joke. Kentucky’s student section isn’t even top 20. And it’s not because the student section isn’t on the side, it’s because most of the students that go to the game don’t give a shit. The loudest part of the arena is the nosebleed section. If they really want the students to make a difference they need to change the way they distribute tickets. It’s too hard for real fans of the team that are students to get tickets.

I agree with 3 and 7. With the exception of a few BIG games (UofL, UNC, Florida), Rupp is pathetic. More like an NBA arena in mid-season. This is particularly true of the lower arena – they come to be entertained, not to be “participants.” Our student section is uncreative and at the end of the court, not intimidating (I was a student there for 4 years and have experienced this first hand)

UK students, and half the fans treat UK basketball games as “an event”. Dont believe me, then pony up the money and get a lower level seat. and then….Standup and yell during the game. You will “politely” be told to sit down

Sideline student sections are rare… Duke, Pitt, Michigan State (?) are the only that pop to mind.

As to a mention of Bloomington, it does beat Rupp hands down as far as rowdiness. But its size and orientation do that at Bloomington, as well as Cameron Indoor.

Rupp is simply too big, and the demand for tickets are too large to have the atmosphere that we see at other schools. Bloomington looks and feels like a crowded high school state finals that everyone’s lucky to be at every night… Rupp feels like a Memphis Grizzlies game.

That being said, the student section is pretty lackluster most nights. Given the size and atmosphere of Rupp, I’m not sure what a more rowdy crowd would do though.

If you want a new 18 year old freshman each year to surround the court and scream just to be screaming, adding no value to the true UK fandom experience then put the kids around the court to “Intimidate” the opposing team. I believe Rupp is just perfect. We did go three seasons without losing a home game. This isn’t Indiana or Duke. It’s not always loud in the Cathedral for Mass but you know your somewhere sacred and Rupp Arena is my Cathedral for college basketball. AMEN

As someone who likes to break down a game, I do like Rupp. I usually find that the fans that do go to Rupp are more basketball intelligent than most CBB fans.

But there’s an obvious lack of enthusiasm at times. I think you can strike a tone between the Cameron Crazies and Rupp… Phog Allen Fieldhouse feels like a good medium to me, and I’d be more than happy to have their atmosphere for a game.

  18. Rex Chapman
    3:01 pm January 23, 2013 Permalink

@ Sadat-X Phog Allen has a capacity of 16,400. That’s nearly 8,000 less than Rupp Arena. UK Fans never seem to be content. We wanted a big arena with an NBA experience feel, and now everyone wants the college small gym feel with crazy students surrounding the court. To me the Cameron Crazies and that vibe is played out, every school is doing it, where Rupp stands strong for what it is.

There are lots of college arena’s with student sections down along the sides, but you usually see it more often at the smaller schools that don’t have the demand for tickets that UK has. I think they should elevate the court at Rupp and set up a standing room student section around the perimeter, then have court level seating above them. That would bring some noise and enthusiasm down around the court, while allowing the wealthy donors to retain their lower level seats.

Another thing that would allow for rowdier home crowds – SELL ALCOHOL! Duh!

This is ridiculous. There have been games at Rupp where I could shout over to my friend ACROSS THE COURT upstairs and he can shout back to me!! That’s during the game!!! You can here Cal yelling at players upstairs in the nose bleeds. Best student section? Paaaaleeeeeeeeeezzzzzeee !

    @ Rex Chapman

Don’t get me wrong, I am content.

For those of us who have been to enough games at Rupp, there’s an intensity to watching the game that you can feel. And the crowd responds to the game the way I appreciate… for smart play and hustle, and when a poor choice is made on the court you can feel the collective sighs around you. Not to mention the fact that I have witnessed Rupp applaud good basketball from opposing teams on multiple occasions, in person and on TV. I love that, and its a testament to our respect for college basketball itself.

Cameron is just a bunch of screaming undergrads.

But Phog Allen always seems like a venue that embraces its blue blood status and tradition with a bit more enthusiasm. Your point is taken by the capacity, and I certainly realize that Rupp is larger. I feel like Rupp Arena suffers the same minor problems that the Dean Smith Center has.

Perhaps if we could mutually schedule a team like UNC to a home and home with their smaller and more traditional gym it would be a perfect interjection of student body respect and encouragement for enthusiams. A UNC and UK home and home at Carmichael and Memorial would be TV gold and something that ESPN would pay out their rectums for.

The eRUPPtion zone is awful. It is only loud for big games and even then it’s not very loud. Everyone in it sucks, yeah you too “referee guy”. The gimmicks that they try and do for the opposing teams free throws is the worst…

Lol at the eRRuption zone. Rex, I get what you’re doing, but why can’t the older fans embrace the college atmosphere and stand and cheer more often? When did it become bad to stand and make noise at a college game?

Rupp is not in the top ten. Its not the students fault. They wait for hours to try to get tix. Until we uproot some of the blue hairs who have had the tickets too long or start giving away alcohol nothing will change. I went to the Cincinnati Marquette game and the student section was great.

The UK students just stand there with their arms crossed and yell at bad calls. They aren’t loud. Cameron Crazies or the Izzone are the best students sections in basketball, period.

Can you imagine the following scenario? Play one home game a year against a top team in Memorial Coliseum with the lower third going to students and faculty and the rest distributed in pairs to non-season ticket holders. It would be a loud game for sure. It won’t happen, but can you imagine the atmosphere? Fans from all over the state would be vying for a ticket to the game. I guess scalping would be through the roof for this event, but who knows.

    17. NC state im sure there are more, but we have almost double the seating as some of these venues and they are put in the end zones. I was at the last game and the visiting team always gets the other end of the court from the eruption zone in the second half…..either the head cheer student was high or drunk but they kept doing the silent caos cheer or they to the seal cheer where they flap their hands……. anyway they were shooting at the opposite end of the eruption zone and the students were doing the hand motions and the silent caos and the freethrow shooter couldnt even see what they are doing….if that makes any freakin sense at all.
