Bluegrass State Basketball is reporting that they were informed by a person close to Vinny Zollo’s high school, George Rogers Clark, that he will be decommitting from the University of Kentucky and opening his recruitment back up. Vinny is a big time UK fan and loved the fact that he was going to play for the blue and white, so I know this had to be a very hard decision for him. Still, it is probably the best decision for the young man because he wasn’t built for the dribble drive offense. That is not a knock on Vinny, who is very fundamental and has a great basketball mind, it is just the truth. He would fit a lot better into a slow down system that allows him to get into offensive positioning near the basket.
Vinny is one of the nicest and most polite kids that I have ever had the opportunity to speak with and I wish him nothing but the best in the future. I hope that UK fans will also recognize this and root for Vinny wherever he ends up.
Update: Rivals’ Jerry Meyer spoke to Zollo himself, who said that he has officially informed the UK coaches of his decision. Zollo already holds an offer from Oklahoma State, has visited Notre Dame and is getting interest from Cincinnati. In other words, he has really hit the ground running this time around. Good for him.
