UNC Chancellor to step down

Some scandal-related news out of Chapel Hill today, although it doesn’t involve the NCAA doing anything: Holden Thorp will step down from his throne as UNC Chancellor and return to the classroom as a chemistry professor at the university. Thorp announced today that he will resign at the end of the 2012-13 school year.

Meanwhile, Mark Emmert announced an appearance in Detroit later this week to talk about the NCAA’s efforts to continue to embed academics and protect and sustain the collegiate/student-athlete model. Priorities.

What’re those students burning in the background? Textbooks? NCAA compliance guides? School honor code signature pages?

Well if Emmert wants to find out how not to do things he can always go to Chapel Hill before he gives his big speech. ” Continue to embed academics” makes you want to puke. As for the student/athlete model,,,,just use Julius Peppers,,,throw up a couple of slides of his transcript and talk about what a model student he was.

I happen to know Holden Thorp…not well, but well enough to know that he is an outstanding person that loved his school as much as many of us love outs. This is one of those situations where a good guy gets caught up in a bad situation and becomes a victim…too bad.

University presidents DO NOT step down for small fry stuff that the ncaa doesn’t care about. The sh!t is about to hit the fan over there in nc. This dude and his people may think that him stepping down will end this unfortunate episode in unc history – not so. This just solidifies that there is / are major issues at unc that the ncaa will be forced to deal with. Wonder if espn or any others will be reporting this. If this ‘stuff’ was going on at UK, and our prez “stepped down” – espn would be ALL OVER this.
