Kentucky Sports Radio

University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

Ummmm…. -3.5???

Vegas released the opening line for the game and it’s….ummm… it’s low. Kentucky opened as a 3.5 point favorite over Indiana. Sounds like national sportswriters aren’t the only ones believing in the Hoosiers; the line makers in Vegas are on board, too.

I expected the game to be somewhere around -8 or -9. 3.5 points seems pretty low to me.

Thoughts?

Vegas doesn’t care who wins the game. They set the line to make money. Could have set the line low to get action on IU straight up. This line will raise to 6 or so. It has to. Right?

  27. vegasinsider
    3:21 pm December 9, 2011 Permalink

The reason the line is so low is because the Cats have not covered the spread in their last 3 games. Vegas tries to keep teams as close to zero as possible against the spread. That is the only reason this line is this low. As I like to call them its a ” Back the truck up special!!!”

I’ve been trying to tell everyone this will be a much tougher game than we expect but no one listens (womp womp). Still I thought the line would be at least -5.5ish.

I don’t look forward to things around here if we lose. The arrogance has been pretty bad (although Indiana’s has, somehow, been even worse).

Everyone who thinks UK will win by 10+ is not wrong in thinking that… but remember homecourt still has 4 to 5 points. If UK is favored by -3.5, really the line is about -8.5. The real number to look at from Vegas is the total. If it is in the 150’s expect the line to jump to -4 quickly signaling a double digit win. If the total is set under 145 expect a closer game.
I would easily bet UK -3.5, but honestly the public will be all over the line when it is released. I expect by gametime the line moves to -5 or so. The UK moneyline, though heavily juiced, seems to be a gimmie.

This game scared me more then the Carolina game. There is deep and I mean deep hatred for Kentucky in Indiana land that has been pasted on for generations. I can remember when Mike Flynn cut the nets down on the undefeated Hoosiers in 1975 and shook it at their fans. He was from Jeffersonville, Indiana I believe. Bob Knight more then anyone absolutely DESPISES Kentucky. Living in Western Kentucky the Hoosiers have been my Super Bowl for about 35 years. GO CATS!

#37 – i know vegas is still make’n money. i was simply saying – this has to be the crazy’est line in the last 10 years. really. hell, this line will even have iu fans betting that we cover. they may in their hearts think iu will beat us – but if given the opportunity to put money on their beloved team only losing by 4 and them making a grand on the side, i’d say they will go with that…

Look, I think UK will win by 20+ but 3.5 to 4 isn’t a bad spread at all. Assembly Hall is a claustrophobic little gym with the fans on top of the players. IU can get hot from 3 and make it close.
As stated above, Vegas wants action, and a 3.5 line should get them plenty.

51-b/c vegas has never made a terrible line before. you know like when UF was -10 @UK a few months ago.
IU 8-0, 29-38 combined opp. record, 1-0 vs bcs opp.
this line will move to -6 or -7 by gametime

Although I think we are much more talented this game scares me a little. IU is hyped up and I’m afraid we might take this game lightly after such a big win. Vegas is almost always on the money with the line! I’ve bet quite a bit in my day and I would stay away from this game. I think UK will either roll to a late game blowout or we’ll get beat. I really, really hope it’s the first because after all the crap IU has talked I hope we put a beat down on them!

I can’t believe how much banter there is on this game. I guess the rivalry is alive and well. Spreads are ridiculous. We’ve all seen Calipari take the foot off the gas and coast. Sometimes (everytime???) it seems to be a test of his team for end of game stategies. There is abig difference between up 10 and up 20 with 2,3,or 4 minutes to play. I’m thinking this game will be in that range at that time…so -3.5 seems safe. I believe Vegas may be baiting. It was said, wisely, long ago,The race doesn’t always go to the strong and swift, but that’s the way to bet! Go Big Blue!
