UK’s Offensive Line Like Enron: “Smartest Guys in the Room”

“I am literally going to murder you, I love it.”

If you’re starting a pocket quarterback, like Kentucky is this season, you’d better have a good offensive line.  That’s not exactly rocket science, yet it can often go overlooked.  To say they’re important in the offense is an understatement, but there’s a reason Tom Brady once gave members of his O-line Audi SUVs: they give him the time in the pocket he needs to be, well, Tom Brady.

That’s why the Herald-Leader asked Kentucky’s offensive linemenwhat makes them effective; after all, they’ve only given up three sacks so far this year.  Their answer?  Not speed, or brawn, but brains.  According to guard Larry Warford, “We know we’re not the strongest offensive line; we’re not the fastest, but we’re going to be the smartest.”

Offensive linemen are typically considered some of the smartest guys on the field anyway.  Tackles and centers are perennially the top two scorers on the Wonderlic test administered at the NFL scouting combine.  So to say you want to be the smartest O-line, well… you’re saying something.

Have they backed it up, though?  Attitude is one thing, but you need the stats to back it up if you want people to take you seriously.  Well, consider first that UK is currently 18th nationally in passing yards.  After two games, Max Smith is 65/89 (73%) for 634 yards and six touchdowns.  If there were an NCAA version of Fantasy Football, Mr. Smith would be making his owners very happy.  Unfortunately, the metric for measuring the O-line is pretty vague; you really have to look at the backs to see how well it’s doing.  But is there much chance that Smith would be doing so well if his line wasn’t giving him ample protection?  No, there really isn’t.

Additionally, UK’s top three running backs are averaging 9.6, 8.7, and 6.2 yards per carry.  Is that because they’re just that good, and can dodge tackles all day long?  Well, give them some credit, that’s a hard job and they’ve been doing well.  But the real magic happens with the blocking, and these backs have had some holes to run through that have allowed them to get those averages up.  Last year, our leading average rusher with 30+ carries was Matt Roark, who picked up 5.4 yards per carry.  That’s a far cry from the current averages.  Granted, SEC play will take its toll, but the promising start gives hope that the offensive production will be able to continue fairly well in the Conference.

So maybe the honor roll awards, lofty majors like biology and engineering, and film-study sessions are paying off.  The offense has been clicking pretty well to start the season, and it all starts with the line.  Hopefully they’re studying the Hilltoppers this week.

i think it’s a little premature to be throwing out stats like these after just 2 games, and we haven’t exactly played sec quality teams.

    It doesn’t matter.

At the end of the year, UK Football will still suck. They’ll win no more than 4 games this year. They’ll never beat Florida. Goergia is going to crush UK this year. Missouri will wipe the floor with them. Vandy will defeat UK.

UK may defeat one SEC team this year. A Mississippi team. Big whoop.

And if UK does beat Vandy and by some miracle makes it to five wins, so f*ckin’ what. They still suck.

Kentucky Football will never be much more than what it is. A program that is dedicated only to bringing a share of the profits from the SEC into the coffers of the UKAA.

UK does not give a flying f*ck about Football. It’s obvious to anyone and everyone except for the freakin’ blue kool aid drinking morons aka UKAA’s useful idiots.

Kentucky Football us the Yugo of the SEC.

Barn – not Truth, no such “Choker Peelips”

There was positive adjustment from week one to week 2, hopefully even more with a slightly tougher WKU this week.

Ark was not confused – Stupid more like it, 20 pt lead at half and your throwing the Ball with a back up QB when you have a Heisman quality RB!

UK obviously gives a **** about football

I agree with #1, it is a little early to start throwing out 9.5 yards averaged rushing for so and so…..what we know from past experience is UK is a classic “bait and switch” football program. They get their fans (or people who believe the hype) to think that they are putting up all these great numbers against the Kent States and the WKUs and the Sanfords of the football world, but they don’t win in the SEC, leaving people dissappointed that they took the bait in the first place. When UK consistently wins games in the SEC and competes for, at least the East crown, then I will be excited about 9.5 rushing yards per carry…until then, I will continue to temper my expectations and expect that we will win 3 or 4 games a year and maybe pull off some sort of upset when a powerhouse has overlooked us.

9–i never said anything about ‘choker peelips’ and i didn’t say UK doesn’t give a **** about football, although i think it’s no more than a cash cow to UK. i was just agreeing with the jist of what dave had to say.

    Keep drinkin’ that koolaid.

UK showed improvement against the Little Sisters of the Mercifucl Poor.

Of course they’re going to show improvement. It was like a latter day Mike Tyson fighting Erkel. It doesn’t prove that Mike can beat Brock Lesner in a UFC ring.

I guess that hurts your feelings. Tough. Whine to someone else if your panties are in a wad over the truth.

Stupified, confused…what’s the diff. Kentucky will still be defeated in the end.

Dave, what do you expect UK Football to be? You can still support the team and accept them for what they are.. We aren’t Alabama…

I am gonna make a statement of opinion: “The line coach Mike Summers has done much better with this O-Line than last seasons’ pre-season allegedly superior line.”

not much else I can say…last year- WKU tore through that line like paper machete’, that will be more telling than the competition we have faced. Even though U of StankySmell is allegedly stronger/better on D Line and Kent State is alleged to have the premier D in MAC…..

I think the O-Line has been AWESOME… it stacks up to SEC….well we all know that is a different story for all teams in SEC.

Frank, that is exactly what the UKAA expects you to do. In that way, they get to make money off of you while making the lowest possible investment.

I refuse to support the UKAA in their endeavor to field the worst Football program in the SEC.
