UK will use a two-headed quarterback on Saturday

After practice today, Joker Phillips announced that Kentucky will use a “slash” quarterback system against Mississippi State. Jalen Whitlow will be under center (or behind center) for the first series and then he’ll split the snaps with Patrick Towles throughout the rest of the game.

Joker added that he is less nervous about the slash than he was about using Matt Roark at quarterback against Tennessee.

The “slash” quarterback system will be _____________ .

I’m glad all the geniuses in the state will get their wish and watch a wasted year for Patrick Towles. He needs to redshirt. If he was 4th on the depth chart two weeks ago, he doesn’t need to play. I want him to succeed, but a new coach with a pass happy offense and four years of a HS All American Kentucky-bred quarterback would be outstanding. I watched Curtis Pulley and Shane Boyd both get booed coming on the field repeatedly because people in the stands wanted couldn’t decide who they wanted to play. This will end in heartbreak.

All these so called UK fans have already given up on the football season. Yes I understand we are a basketball school but why can’t we support both. I was at commonwealth and was disgusted to see fans leaving as soon as South Carolina took the lead. We talk about Joker and we talk about our defense but we are one of the youngest teams in the nation and we hung right there with South Carolina.. Sure joker makes some bonehead calls(wasting the timeout) but so did the ole ball coach. We as fans should support whoever the football coach is at the time. I love UK basketball but right now it’s football season and we get to see two freshman quarterbacks play. What if we pull out the win? I think we “can” win the remainder of our games this year. I was as pissed off as anyone when we lost to Western, but lets enjoy football season and support our team. Ask yourself if you was a recruit would you want to come to UK to play football for fans like ours?

Joker is just doing what so many fans have begged for so long. What the hell is he supposed to do at this point? Top two quarterbacks and top two running backs on the depth chart going into this season are out.

You wanted Towles the All-American? Well…you got him!

I hope they both do great, just not great enough to extend the current staff.

  27. Musehobo
    12:52 pm October 4, 2012 Permalink

I don’t understand this at all. Whitlow did ok last week, he should be the guy. What happens when one of them gets hot, we bench the other guy? There’s a reason other teams don’t do it this way. I could understand it if you thought Towles was better, and wanted to use Whitlow as a wildcat threat. This? This is dumb.

We wanted Towles and just like Tim Couch and J-Lo, he will get his chance and if he stays healthy can return BBN to a bowl game, maybe not this year, but next year will be better with the experience gained this year.

I’m excited to see Towles finally play, I’ve been waiting for a while now. He IS the quarterback of the future. Whitlow is very athletic and can do a lot of things on the ground. I’m hoping he turns out a lot like Randall Cobb. Joker has no choice but to play the 2 together, if he plays Newton (who I feel really bad for) he will lose his job.

#36, Pike was considered by every recruiting service as the better prospect. He threw it away at Auburn but regardless there is no way you can say the hype around Towles is anywhere near Couch. Couch was billed the savior of Kentucky football and Bill Curry.

Have not given up! Still there every week just like I have always been but…………….. If Towels is so good why was he Redshirted (not saying he is or is not good but a legit question)? Two QB system does NOT work even for a good team. I think Sanders is a good QB coach but not a good OC.

Ease up on Newton. Guy was put in a situation that was a disaster in waiting. Speaking of a disaster in waiting,,,2 QB system,,,,if you are going to pull the redshirt off the QB of the future,,,,let him play.

  47. CatGrad7072

I think that Joker was the one who should have been cut off in Gainesville. He totally mismanaged the situation with MN and crushed whatever shred of confidence the young man had left.

  50. Kevin

…a success. We will beat MSU on Saturday. I think we looked incredible in the first half against SC and they are one of the top teams in the country this year. We have two QB’s that know about 15% of the offense each but they know completely different parts of the offense so between them it will be around 30%. The team believes in them and and I think we will put on a good show Saturday to get the first win over Dan Mullens in 4 years. MSU hasn’t played anybody and we are getting better at an exponential rate. I think it all comes together on Saturday and Towles will also prove he’s the real deal out of the shotgun formation. This is going to be fun to watch and the Cats will turn a page on this season in the right direction.

The “slash” quarterback system will be another nail in Joker’s coffin. Two QB systems just don’t work, the Jets are trying it and look how effective it is for them.

Lots of hate for removing Towles’ redshirt too, but I’d rather him have his redshirt removed and see him suited up on the sideline than entertain the notion of having Morgan Newton waiting to take over if Whitlow gets injured.

  55. Ryan
