Kentucky football is just ten days away, but while you’re waiting, Kentucky volleyball starts tonight. Tonight? Tonight. The 13th ranked Wildcats open up a weekend tournament in Memorial with a match against North Carolina this evening at 7 p.m., following a lead-in game between Lipscomb and Long Beach State at 5 p.m. According to UKAthletics:
Doors will open one hour prior to the start of each session’s opening match. Kentucky begins the season with its highest preseason national ranking in school history and is coming off a 28-6 season in 2011. The Cats return nine letter winners, including seven players who appeared in all 34 matches during a Sweet 16 run a season ago. Senior libero Stephanie Klefot and junior right side hitter Whitney Billings were selected as preseason All-SEC selections to lead the returners. Kentucky’s four-member freshman class was tabbed as the 15th-best in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com
The Cats play UNC this evening, and will face both Lipscomb and Long Beach State tomorrow at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m., respectively. This was mentioned a couple weeks ago, but if you couldn’t make the volleyball team’s Sweet 16 match last season in Memorial, you really missed out. As you might have seen watching the Olympics, good volleyball is as entertaining as sports get, and these Wildcats are clearly very, very good. If you’re going through UK sports withdrawals, tonight is the perfect opportunity to get a quick fix.
Oh, and it’s North Carolina. That’s sort of important, right? We may not be playing them in basketball this year, but that doesn’t mean we can’t earn some bragging rights over the academically-fraudulent Tar Heels. In case you were wondering:
Kentucky owns a 10-4 all-time record against North Carolina with the last meeting coming in 1994. The Tar Heels claimed that matchup by a 3-0 score. Prior to that loss, Kentucky had won seven-straight in the series.
So if you’re looking to get into something this Friday evening, head to Memorial to see the volleyball team extend that record to 11-4. New and returning students, I know you’re not working on homework yet. And if you are, chill. It’s the first week of the semester; you just had syllabus days. Let’s watch some volleyball.
