Tomorrow brings about the game that most Kentucky fans have silently dreaded….the second round matchup vs the Connecticut Huskies. There is no doubt that UCONN has the most talented team in the country and it is not an exaggeration to say that there reasonably could be six Connecticut players who will play in the NBA and four who could be legitimate stars. So from a talent standpoint, they are not only the definite favorite over Kentucky, but every team in the tournament.
However the team is not unbeatable. They lost to Syracuse and Marquette….both teams on Kentucky’s level. Louisville, an NIT team, gave them two solid matchups and Albany had a 12 point lead on the Huskies with 10 minutes to go in the game. So it is definitely possible. What will it take? Well either Crawford or Sparks, and maybe both, must be hot from the outside and score 20+ points. Morris must stay out of foul trouble and contribute 10-15 points. Rondo has to have his head in the game for all 40 minutes and needs 15 of his own. And then there must be one more player (Moss, Bradley, Perry, Thomas…) who also is a major contributor. IF all that happens, the Cats will be in the game at the end, with a chance to steal it.
Either way, the win over UAB was big. It has been a disappointing season, but it was good to see the team right itself and make it to this point. IF they lose tomorrow, it is likely to the eventual national champion….anyone can take that.
