UK released a statement from Coach Cal

cal-vandy

UK released a statement from Coach Cal late Sunday night regarding Kentucky’s postseason. It’s basically the same quotes he tweeted a couple hours earlier, but with a little bit about Robert Morris and his return to Pittsburgh.

“I’m really disappointed we didn’t make the NCAA Tournament, but we are going to use this time to make us better. We had our chances, but I’m not going to stop. It’s a great lesson for the future of our program and a humbling experience for me as a coach. To the Big Blue Nation, you did your part all season long. You showed up in droves and helped us pull through key games. We didn’t do our part. Even now, I’m going to coach these guys, try to make them better and give everything I can to make sure we control our destiny in the future. I’m excited to return to Pittsburgh and look forward to facing a team that is going to present a real challenge for us. Robert Morris won their league in the regular season. They shoot a lot of 3-pointers, produce a lot of steals, so we have to come prepared.”

We’ll have more from Coach Cal later today.

Cats.

It’s a real shame games are being played in Rupp on Tuesday night. What? No games until Thursday or Friday? hmmm. Well, it’s a shame we don’t have a backup arena, maybe an arena the UK women’s team plays in. What? We do? Hmmmm. Well, it’s a shame we don’t have a 19,000 arena sitting empty 75 mile to the northwest. What? We do? Puzzling why we would play on the road…..

A very classy statement from a class act guy. He’s right: This is a humbling experience but I’m a firm believer that there is no experience that has to ultimately be a bad one. As long as you use it to learn, to grow, and to build – than let’s do it. As Matt said, this “is what it is is” and we have to make the best of the situation. We’re in the NIT – now let’s rock it and show everyone that even when the team is not the best, our pride is.

If Cal was telling the truth: I’m really disappointed that Ryan Harrow turned out to be a dud, that Archie couldn’t shoot at all, and that Alex couldn’t do multiple things at one time without falling on his face.

And that’s really all that needed to be said. Taking Noel’s injury out of the mix, those are the 3 reasons this team sucked. Period.

I completely agree with no.2 (Rixter) it’s a big pile of B$ that the best fanbase in the world is forced to travel to Pittsburgh. My apologies to Coach Cal, but Pittsburgh is to Pennsylvania what Cleveland is to Ohio. GL to the Cats, and fare thee well to the Seniors, and those who leave the program this off-season. Good Luck, and God Speed.

Ummmn..MIke? What about North Carolina? They were 2 – 8 against the tournament field this year, including 0 – 6 on the road. When did they prove they can go on the road and beat good teams? When they trounced 13 – 18 Clemson by 9?

Everyone b!tching on here about us not making it should take a step back and realize what this is. BASKETBALL. A GAME. Yes, this program means so much to us because of how we grew up with it, or how it has effected our lives in some way, but Cal has done more for this program, aguably since Rupp himself. Get a grip and who cares if we go to the NIT one year. We are one year removed from a CHAMPIONSHIP, and people are acting like Cal hasn’t done his job.

4- So if after Gillispe left, someone came up to you and told you that your next coach is going to take you to the Elite Eight, Final Four, Chanmpionship game, and an NIT in the first four years, you wouldn’t take that? What if he then told you that he would not only bring the program back to relevance in the national eye, but also secure the top recruits year after year? If you wouldn’t take that, then you’re an idiot.

#2, I am in full agreement. It was posted earlier by KSR that the decision was made long ago that UK would play in the NIT if it came to that. Well if that is the case, and considering the shaky ground we have been on all year on making the tournament, then there is NO EXCUSE for not having a backup plan in place to have the Cats playing in Memorial. The UK administration has failed the fans – period! Totally ridiculous that this team is going to have to travel 300 miles to a glorified HS gym to play on the road if they are the overall #1 seed in the NIT! Thanks Barney!

Hate to see UK in the NIT but I can’t complain really; Elite 8, Final 4, and National Champs. Pretty good run really and if you have to add a NIT bid in there the best time would be right after winning it all.

UK lost 6 players from last year, 6! The only returning player was a “role player”. Hate it happened but it did…I’ll be watching them play on Tuesday night and after!

To coach a national title winner, recruit a top class, then have to return to your hometown in the NIT, all under the microscope of being the UK Basketball Coach must take a huge toll on your psyche. This tops off what must have been Cal’s most frustrating season in coaching. Coach Cal needs our support, just like he said the players did, to get across the finish line. Fans support their team, especially in the difficult times.

I understand that we don’t have a bench this year…what I’m getting at is that why would a 4 star Darius Miller want to come if he’s NEVER going to play? …as opposed to opening up the rotation a bit and letting a 4 star or two be involved – to an exent – in order to gain experience for their Junior year?

#37- there is NO place in the NBA for Kyle Wiltjer, except in the audience. You need to start watching The Association more closely. The level of play is better than it’s been in several years and the overall athleticism needed to play has never been more pronounced.

Wiltjer is a good college player and probably a great person, but he does not have anywhere close to NBA potential. None.

But we damn sure didn’t expect it to be the NIT tourney. He and his staff picked every member of this team, so I don’t accept the people who want to make excuses for how they performed. He ran his mouth and they put him in his place, a 3000 seat arena, back where it all started, the GOLD standard indeed! We need tubby back, he can lose this many games and still make the tourney. I didn’t like the way he just disgaurded everyone when he showed up, that just didn’t seem fair to these guys who sacrificed threw BCG’s insane system. Way to make the right decision Mitch Brainfart. I saw all these posts that stated they couldnt wait for football season, what are they thinking, do they not know we can never ever win the SEC championship in football! What a bunch of morons! Let me also say that despite this year’s draft being historically weak, only Noel is a lock to get drafted. In a season like this one with so many unkowns, NBA teams will be watching the NCAA tourney very closely and you’ll see kids shoot up draft boards based on their performance.

Remember LSU’s improbable run to the FF a few years ago under John Brady? Ty Thomas and Big Baby Davis played themselves into the NBA that tourney. Thomas went #3 or 4 solely on his tourney showing and raw athleticism. Hasn’t played like a Lottery Pick yet.

NBA teams will have noticed how Goodwin, Poythress and WCS gagged up an NCAA tourney berth. All of them have massive holes in their games and need another year or two before they can make an NBA roster.

This season was doomed with Archie’s wink.

I didn’t expect them to be phenomenal. But most of our losses were blowouts. Not every player left 100 percent on the floor. How much time did they spend in a gym on their own? Did Archie ever ask for help with free throws considering he draws so many fouls? How many players went to their coach and asked what it was they were doing wrong? Did Wiltjer ever ask what he could do to gain strength? Did any of the players actually ask for extra individual instruction? Again, did they even like the gym? Did they enjoy practice? These are some questions I want answered, and you don’t have to be a senior or elite talent to have a positive answer.

I watched so many games this past week and saw so many young men simply play their hearts out to make the tournament. The Kentucky team did not make the cut because they did not deserve it. Simple fact! You can measure these kids height, weight, and look at their stats, but one thing you can’t measure is their heart! Most not all,did not have the heart to win…..Maybe it was all the hype! Maybe they thought just wearing that blue jersey with all the tradition of Kentucky basketball would carry the through! I hope this has been a lesson for them when they try to make it on a different level. However if they don’t change their ways they will be watching the pro games on TV like the rest of us!

40: I’m with you 99%. I just don’t “hate” UK fans. I know you don’t either, and I am just as saddened as you at the quality and tone of the posts on KSR. Trolls, fake fans, call them what you will, they DO NOT represent even a small minority of true UK fans. I am happy to see more fans like you coming forward in this forum to cry BS! I saw the true fans at the Florida and Missouri games in Rupp Arena. Two great wins without Noel, where players and fans were united and totally in tune to win. While it has been a frustrating season for players, coaches and fans, the sun will continue to shine on my old Kentucky home. And that includes Louisville, my friends. I will continue to cheer and support Kentucky basketball in this post-season, UK, Louisville and Western, followed by Florida and the other SEC teams. And next year? Well, here’s hoping the 2013 Wildcats take UK back to the promised land. #UK1Kentucky4ever

Wiltjer needs to get his but into the weight room this off-season and get ripped. If he can physically transform himself the way Scott Padgett once did so he can go inside with more authority, he’ll be a much more effective player.

This is my observation of this team. I don’t think it was the lack of heart that doomed this team. The defense was awful. Almost every one of them was a step behind and got burned of the dribble. Look at the times Alex would foul out. Constantly getting burned. Harrow would have stupid reach in fouls because his man would get by him. Ever notice how Noel or WCS would lurk in the middle so he could help defend the man that blew away from his defender. Noel was quick and athletic enough to negate the bad defense. Wiltjer was too slow. Mays played decent defense but at times was too short for some of the teams the Cats played. Even Archie would be a step behind at times. This defense relied too much on Noel and when he got hurt WCS did his best but the defense just wasn’t the same. This team on offense was terrible. No one could create their own shot. There was no ball movement on offense. This team is just slow. Look at the lack of fast breaks. Our SG didn’t shoot and teams knew it. We played the same old offense game after game and it was predictable because we don’t have any play makers. Cal had to try an offense based on the slowness of the players. Archie was predictable on offense. Dribble in the middle full of defense and throw the ball up. Lack of an aggressive PG didn’t help either. Lack of FT shooting was another part that hurt. Look at some of the games that were lost where better FT shooting would make the difference. The players needed to spend more time in the gym working to get better. Of course this is my opinion.
