UK quarterback race down to two

UK Football Fan Day

Kentucky’s quarterback competition is down to two guys, Mark Stoops told the media following today’s practice. Stoops did not, however, give any indication as to which two remaining players are in contention for the job. One would assume it’s Jalen Whitlow and Max Smith, though. Neal Brown was spotted meeting with those two separately after practice.

Stoops also said the third option will likely redshirt.

We’ll have more from practice in a bit…

Really surprised to hear that most believe Whitlow will get the spot. To me, This would be a perfect situation for the season. Tough SEC schedule & new coach + fast paced offense w/ running QB = exciting season no matter the outcome, and perhaps a chance to pull off an upset somewhere. I feel a bit sad for Max, but I would personally love to see Whitlow at the helm this year.

@1…I didn’t know towels could speak – does it matter if they’re made of more cotton than polyester?

In the meantime, I think it’s probably best for Towles to redshirt and work on learning the system.

Neal Brown was spotted meeting with those two separately after practice.

He was ALSO seen talking to:
    1) Mark Stoops;
    20 The Water Boy; and
    3) His wife.

Thus, making them possible candidates for the post also, using this “logic.”

Even if Smith were named starter, he’d get hurt soon enough.

I feel bad for all of the current QBs as they have given us all they have, but the writing is on the wall. We’re going in another direction.

#7 Whitlow already is our current qb. How do you mean a new direction?

I’m betting the 3rd option is Reese Phillips.

Really like that both he his family and his supporters stayed out of the hoopla.

I am disappointed in Towles if he is the odd man out. Finalist for the Elite 11, prototypical size and arm strength for a big time QB, and gaudy HS stats at a high school that puts out college ready QBs (Lorenzen, Guidugli). If he can’t beat out Whitlow (backup in HS) and Smith (basically unrecruited out of HS) that’s on him. That being said I would not be surprised if the third string guy sees a fair amount of minutes this year. Smith is almost assured an injury a season that keeps him out several games, and in the SEC you have to worry a little about the durability of a mobile/dual-threat QB. If Whitlow and Smith are the two finalists, hats off to both of them.

Would be something if Phillips was the backup. Towels has been a bust in practice it seems.

Towles* as a correction to my previous post. Why would he go to WKU? For someone of his supposed caliber, he could go somewhere better than there.

  17. Rational thinking
    2:05 pm August 19, 2013 Permalink

@5…ironically, your logical reasoning abilities are pisspoor. The difference between the waterboy/ms. Brown and whitlow/max smith is that the latter two are QBs in the running for the starting spot.

Neal may have left practice, headed to Starbucks and chatted it up with his favorite barrista as well, but that doesn’t mean that individual is one of the three candidates for the starting QB position.

    Swing and a miss…

To me this means that Whitlow and Smith are the top 2 and that Reese Phillips is the 3rd option. I would imagine that Phillips will redshirt and Towles may transfer. Honestly I think Towles could end up at WKU, Towles seems to have the skill set that Bobby Petrino likes. Kind of reminds of a Ryan Mallet.

  19. So it is
    2:10 pm August 19, 2013 Permalink

How ironic if anyone transfers to Western knowing UKs offense in and out. That would almost be like being a traitor of going to Louisville, Tenn, or Florida.

Cutler is saying that it looks like Reese Phillips looks like he’ll be quarterback. You can’t argue with the ‘stache!

3 QBs are sophs. If Towles redshirts this year, and Reese Phillips is 3rd., and then Reese reshirts the following year, along with Barker, that will give us some room between QBs instead of them all being in the same class.

This coaching staff won’t be satisfied just with Barker. They will get another bigtime QB for the class of 2014.
I forsee another friendly QB battle again next year.

This is a bet. If Whitlow doesn’t start he will transfer and sit out this season and transfer to Auburn with Malzhan and start next season with Auburn. He is a rare talent and I don’t think UK appreciates him enough.

  28. Clarify
    2:44 pm August 19, 2013 Permalink

#27 how do you think that UK doesn’t appreciate Whitlow? He started SEC games as a freshman last year, by all indications, he is leading candidate to start this year. He is the ONLY QB Stoops has said will play a lot, due to his talent, even if he doesn’t start. What else does this staff have to do to appreciate him? Geez

I don’t know Towles, but I know a few people close to the Highlands program. The big knock on Towles was that he was lacking in “football smarts”. He relied on his superior athletic ability and size in high school, but never really learned the game like you’d expect someone of his profile to. Again, I don’t know the kid, just passing along what I’ve heard others say about him. He could be having a difficult time grasping the concepts at UK.

With that said, everyone I’ve spoken to speaks glowingly of Patrick Towles the person. They say he is a great kid, just needs to be pushed a little more than others. Hopefully he can figure it out.

  35. real talk
    3:49 pm August 19, 2013 Permalink

#28 just saying if he doesn’t start. He has been the best by far and coaches saying its a 2 man race. From what I have seen this is not much of a comp so I’m think Whitlow out he don’t start and UK football will be not as good

  36. Clarify
    4:22 pm August 19, 2013 Permalink

#35 at least on the college level, it is very common for coaches not to name a starting QB early, at least when there is not a clear cut returning starter. Why appoint one of these young sophomores as starter early and let him be complacent? All 4 of these QB’s need to be hungry and improving, because odds are a couple QB’s will get hurt during the season. I’ll take your bet. whitlow seems like a team player. I think he will start, but if not, he will contribute a lot. He will not be out.

A lot of great football minds posting about Towles, NOT! This staff thinks the world of Towles and want to develop him and have him ready to start day 1 in 2014. Finally, a staff that sees the big picture. It’s refreshing. This staff see’s what this year holds and it will not be pleasant. Why waste him!

  38. Old Cat
    4:45 pm August 19, 2013 Permalink

Whitlow seems perfect for the Wildcat position and sometimes as receiver. Shades of Cobb.

  39. Clarify
    4:56 pm August 19, 2013 Permalink

#37 yeah sure. Your logic makes no sense. If this staff sees that this is a throwaway year, and IF it sees Towles as the QB of next year, then they would certainly start him and play him so he would hit the ground running in ’14. Another swing and a miss. Not buying this one

  40. Blueghost
    5:22 pm August 19, 2013 Permalink

It will require 3 QB’s to get through the season as it did the last 2 seasons, so Phillips or Towles one will have to play

  41. ForWhotheBellTowles
    5:53 pm August 19, 2013 Permalink

Towles is the one looking for a new direction. Don’t be surprised to hear some interest in UT. The question is would the staff release him to another SEC school.

  42. Blue Boy
    9:12 pm August 19, 2013 Permalink

Towles continues the family line of fluff and no meat. Go to UT and sit and watch just as much as he would here. At least here he could share the same experience as dad, grandfather, uncles and the rest of the family. They will tie for the most games watched in a 4-5 year span. The family tradition will continue as well, after his departure you’ll realized he too was overrated.

My sources tell me that Brown stayed late with Smith and Whitlow to let them know that Towles and Phillips are 1 & 2.
