UK President Eli Capilouto Talks About Football Funding

In the above video, UK President Eli Capilouto talks about the status of funding for UK football facility renovation. The takeaway point is this…Capilouto says that they are not ready yet to ask the legislature for money for football facility renovation. He gives no timetable for such a request. While his comments are interesting, they really don’t tell us much. Three things are important to remember:

1. A proposal is being put forth to go to the state legislature in January and ask for bonding capacity for the University. This proposal can include significant facility renovation for UK football.

2. Senator David Williams has said that if UK football projects are specifically set aside in the bonding request, he would be inclined to support such requests. This is likely due to the money that will come into the football program via the new SEC Contract and potential SEC Network over the next ten years. Williams however doesn’t want to give UK money to use on whatever it wants, but instead wants to see exactly what the request for the money is for. If that request puts football separately, he said on my radio show, he would be inclined to support it.

3. The question now remains whether the President and the Board of Trustees will create a request for UK football facility funding in such a form. If the President agrees, it will be on Williams to follow through with his pledge…for now, it rests with the UK President.

Thus while there is a lot of buzz to the President’s comments, what he says to Ryan Alessi above is not a change in any meaningful way. The same dates are relevant…December, when UK makes its bonding request to the Legislature and January when the decision is made to grant bonding capacity. Until then, we are on a waiting game.

Everyone counted their chickens way too soon in regards to facility upgrades. The president is in a bad position and has a bad combination of factors to deal with right now including: 1) disgruntled faculty who despise the athletic/basketball culture at UK, (2) dilapidated educational facilities at UK compared to peer institutions, and (3) his short tenure. The wrong move by him here will immediately sour relations with the faculty in such a short time after taking office. I think UK will get some but not nearly $100 million.

Keep an eye on bond markets too…QE3 is turning yields much higher than they had been on U.S. Bonds and we are soon approaching another government debt cliff where something will have to be done. This will trickle all the way down to UK when they get ready to do this. Its not worth beating a dead horse but this should have been done years ago…

Capaluto is a mealy-mouthed little nerd who has no interest in sports, UK or otherwise. With him and our idiot athletic director, we have reached a perfect storm of football irrelevance. Boycott UK football until there is a good house-cleaning and we can rid ourselves of these incompetents.

Mitch is not the problem. With him every sports program is/has been better than before he arrived. This includes football which was better under Brooks than any other time in my life. Does a change need to be made at head coach. Probably. But Mitch is not the problem.

Eli on the other hand… Well lets just say that the jury is still out on that one but they are leaning towards the negative regarding him.

11- and research grants does not mean that they are contributing to a business that making money off that business. It just means that outside that business someone who likes to GIVE money away gives it to them.

Dont be a faculty cry baby on this. One has a great working business model. They other is the faculty.

@13 – Do you have no knowledge of how higher education works? Research grants pay for specific research studies or work. Often times these are given by the National Institute for Health, NASA, a pharmaceutical company etc and they specifically note what they can be used for. You can’t use these funds to pay for the Presidents salary, electricity at the student rec center etc. Thats why tuition keeps going up. Looked at your electric bill? Gasoline prices? All of that stuff filters through society and pushes the price of everything up. For sure there is probably a significant amount of waste but that is another topic.

    As for this comment…

“and research grants does not mean that they are contributing to a business that making money off that business. It just means that outside that business someone who likes to GIVE money away gives it to them.”

First, your sentence doesn’t make sense grammatically. Second, I think what you are saying is they aren’t generating a profit at UK. Of course they aren’t, as they are classified as a not-for-profit organization. The stated goals of the University of Kentucky have nothing to do, nor should they, with profit.

20-Well lets see here. Gasoline/oil companies are all having record profits. And since it was stated above that UK is not for profit that doesnt really apply. Second, one of my points is that they need to quit be babies every time the sports program gets attention. The are self sustaining with millions in profits. And quite a few of those students choose to go to UK because of the sports programs. Both of which help pay the teachers salary. They need to get over themselves.

who picked this clown. he sounds like the number crunchers that ran GM into the ground. making decisions based on what makes sense financially over the next 12 months – but forget the big picture and kill the goose.

Ryan missed the perfect opportunity to ask him what he would do if the football program started to lose money because fans are upset at the product on the field, and the lack of hope for improvement. Guess he just has to ask for a little more “mortgage” money.

Oh.. and about the faculty making money for the school. What a joke. The faculty competes for grants to pay for their research projects, and which MIGHT pay a portion of their salary. Overall, the faculty is totally dependant on taxes for their pay and facilities. With costs going up, state funding under pressure and facilities breaking down – THATS why tuition is going up.

Capaluto cannot afford to have the athletic department not be self-supporting. W/ the new SEC money though – he’ll probably just milk it as long as he can.

Boycott football until he gets off his ass.

@25 wow are you seriously that stupid? You obviously have never went to college as you have no idea what a university is nor what it does. Furthermore, the goal of a university should always be academia as it is an institution of higher learning. You have no idea how the funding stuctures are established within an academic setting. What the previous readers have been trying to tell you is that tuiton goes up because the cost of everything rises…nothing stays the same. Also, since UK is a state school, a portion of the budget is actually funded by the state. Since we have been in a economic crisis, there has been fewer state dollars going to the school so in order to balance the budget, tuition has risen. I love sports as much as the next guy, but we must always remember that these are SCHOOLS FIRST and the sports is just a bonus.

  29. ukjonny8
    1:39 pm September 25, 2012 Permalink

28- a few points. Number one: Not stupid at all. Went to college and understand how it works.

Number two. Dont criticize the sports program for receiving attention when they sustain themselves and give millions of dollars to the university. Without the “bonus” of sports how much smaller do you think UK would be. Add no money from ahletics to how many students would choose to go some where else because they havent loved UK sports since they were a kid, and I think you would find that UK would be much smaller.

Number three: I dont think I’m the only one on here that believes you are the same person that just keeps changing your name.

And number four: You sound like you are one of those educators. Whether you are or not, I have a lot of respect for educators. They prepare people (like me a decade ago) for a career that more than likely be the way that person is remembered. And in some cases, like at UK, they are also researches who make great break throughs/discoveries. I’m not dissing educators. What I am doing is putting into place the ones (sounds like this could be you) that b*tch and moan when ever athletics gets attention and/or money for investment for projects. You have something that helps the entire University and there are some people that are so bitter that they live in that shadow they complain and insult the program. As I’ve stated above, call me when your program is self sustaining to the point that you can donate millions of dollars to the school. But its not and more than likely never will be. So just realize your places, get over yourself, and shut the hell up when it comes to one of the sports programs getting some much needed facilities upgrades.

  30. Not the same person I assure you...

“As I’ve stated above, call me when your program is self sustaining to the point that you can donate millions of dollars to the school.”

Sorry, you clearly do not understand higher education as this is illogical. The academic side of the University WILL NOT, DOES NOT, CANNOT PER INSTITUTIONAL CHARTERS AND BY-LAWS, generate a profit—ever. If that were ever the case, education at UK would be free.

As for the rest of your comment, I think you are somewhat correct. University Athletics are huge marketing tool for universities. Thus you must maintain them and ensure that they will succeed. All I have pointed out to you is that UK has some real decisions to make because unfortunately they have critical facilities needs in all areas–academic and athletic.

@29 I can assure you that I am only one person…not changing my name. I am not in education…I am a doctor. You must forgive me for thinking you hadn’t attended college due to your numerous spelling errors and sentences that make no sense. I love sports, some say too much, but I will never advocate sports over academics. If you want a situation where sports and facilities are the top priority, then look to the NBA, NFL etc. The president of a university will always have to put academics first because a university is first and foremost a school.

  32. ukjonny8
    3:21 pm September 25, 2012 Permalink

I’m sorry that my sentences are not up to your standards as a quickly type from my phone during my free time in the KSR comments section. As for my spelling what can I say, never has been one of my strengths.

And all I can say is that athletics pump millions of dollars into the school, while giving hundreds of athletes an opportunity at an education, and millions of people entertainment. The facilities have been long over looked and now should be priorty number one. The athletic dept has waited while the hospital took first billing and now it is footballs turn.

And by the way. UL faculty dont b*tch an moan every time something comes up for funding in ln the athletics dept. Mainly because they understand that the success of athletics has contributed to a huge increase in enrollment. The spoiled faculty at UK has always been handed huge enrollment and thus take for granted what a great resourse the athletics dept is to them.

i thought last year a new arena was actually going to happen, and that was from inside information i.e the decision makers, but the lexington mayor played politics and was unwilling to put up lets say a share of the cost, so it died on the vine. now talk of uk football upgrades, it isn’t even getting a mention in my circles and my circle is the one that will fund it, i.e. frankfort. it is along way to Jan, being an election year and alot could change, but when funding for education is beng cut every year, it is hard for a president of a univeristy to put his attention into upgrades when you can’t even fund salaries or classrooms. it will actually take thinking outside of the box, and getting a bill passed that lets uk set up a situation like u of l has and the ability to do major construction without going to frankfort everytime, but i don’t see that happening either. I get a kick out of this site, stay out of politics and stick to sports. I still hope for an expansion of arena, has to have luxury boxes, that was the only reason many thought a new one, revenue in that is tremendous, then maybe after that you see the football get some love. but lexington the city is the hold up, and uk president is a very smart man, he has the priorities of the entire uk in mind. so if the uk fans really want to put pressure, u pressure the mayor. you increase basketball revenue then you be able to shift attention to football. but keep talking to williams, you may need to keep you ky bar up to date to do so in the future though.

Education is taken care of by tuition, grants, tax money, and private donations. It has nothing to do with the athletic side, unless your athletic budget does not cover all the costs e. g. UL. UK is fortunate to have an athletic budget that is self supporting, due to us. If the facilities are not taken care of pronto, this will not be the case much longer. UK basketball can not support the entire athletic budget. If the athletic budget starts operating in the red. You can bet the basketball will decline also. UK football has been supported through mostly rough times. It is amazing they are in the top 25 in attendance year after year, until now. This is a very visible sign that UK athletics will struggle if they do not act immediately. If this happens they can all kiss their jobs good bye. You can bet on that.

@32 As a graduate of both UK and UofL I can assure you the faculty at UofL also complains about the lack of funding. The difference is their AD pushed for funding and our AD doesn’t. You mention for me to call you when my department can give millions of dollars to the university. I have no department. You fail to understand that the purpose of a university is to educate students, not to make a profit. That is why I question whether you really attended college. If you did, then you should realize all this and not require people to have to keep explaining this to you like a three year old. Yes I do know that sports bring in revenue…especially the revenue sports; hence the name. But again, the objective of a university is to educate students. That is why the president of a university will give priority to funding academics not athletics. Again, I do love sports but we have to keep things in proper perspective.
